On the Road in Southern Vermont: Overview | Connecting Point | Nov. 2, 2016
Travel along the Molly Stark Byway, the corridor that runs along Route 9 from Bennington, VT to Brattleboro, VT. This area is beloved by those who love outdoor recreation, and is a popular spot for “leaf-peeping” during the fall.
There is, however, a lot more to this region than maple syrup and fall foliage. A region with great history, southern Vermont has hosted revolutionary war battles, enjoyed economic boom times during the industrial revolution, and is now looking for its place in the 21st century.
Connecting Point executive producer Tony Dunne and videographer Mark Langevin bring us an overview of the people and issues that drive the rural communities and urban centers which make up this picturesque region, to find out what life is like in this part of the Green Mountain state.
5 Strange Disappearances in Vermont's Mysterious Bennington Triangle...
The 272-mile long ‘Long Trail’, which runs through the length of Vermont, passes over the peak of Glastenbury Mountain and is a mecca for hikers, who come to marvel over the breathtaking landscape........
It is a beautiful and slightly isolated region, that incorporates the ghost town of Glastenbury, which in the 1800s was a thriving centre for logging and charcoal production, but at the last count now has a population of just eight.
Yet this serene region is home to a series of bizarre disappearances that occurred between 1945-1950, none of which have been solved or sufficiently explained. This led local author and paranormal enthusiast, Joseph A. Citro to dub Bennington, and surrounding towns, including Somerset, Shaftesbury and Woodford, as ‘The Bennington Triangle’ and here are five mysterious and so far unexplained disappearances that occurred in the area.....

Silver Lake State Park, Barnard VT
Nice State Park in Central Vermont. $25/night, no hook-up. Limited generator use, so I had to plan my electric usage accordingly. Too shaded for solar. Really pretty park with a nice lake for swimming. Fairly small so not a lot of hiking, but made a few laps around it. Large site and they also have lean-to structures. Clean restrooms and decent wi-fi which was good since no cell signal there.

Killington is a town in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 811 at the 2010 census. Killington Ski Resort and numerous vacation lodges are located here. The town was previously named Sherburne, but was renamed to its original name, Killington, in 1999. The town of Killington was chartered on July 7, 1761 by a New Hampshire grant. In 1800, it was renamed Sherburne after landholder Colonel Benjamin Sherburne. The town voted to revert to its original name of Killington on March 2, 1999; which was approved by the Vermont General Assembly, and became effective July 1, 1999. The 2007 town meeting considered a proposal to impose a three cent surcharge on every dollar of property tax revenue. The proceeds would have been used to fund a town economic development group. The surcharge was not approved by the voters. Killington was one of thirteen Vermont towns isolated by flooding caused by Hurricane Irene on August 28, 2011. Killington was cut off for 19 days. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 46.9 square miles (121 km2), of which 46.6 square miles (121 km2) is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2), or 0.47%, is water. The Ottauquechee River has its headwaters in the town.
