Woodhenge, Wiltshire 5.09.10 (HD)
Woodhenge is a Neolithic Class I henge and timber circle monument located in the Stonehenge World Heritage Site in Wiltshire, England. A similar size to nearby Stonehenge, Woodhenge was only discovered in 1925 when rings of dark spots were noticed in a crop of wheat. It dates from about 2300BC and can be found apx. 2 miles north-east of Stonehenge in the parish of Durrington, just north of Amesbury.

Woodhenge
Based on the plan shown in Mike Parker Pearson's 2012 book Stonehenge, the model created for this video was built as a tool to explore possible sightlines through the monument. The line shown in the video is the only one I have found to date. The height of the posts are pure conjecture, but the use of lintels in circles B and C is an accepted archaeological explanation for the posts' width. It could be that the windows created by these lintels were intended to frame cosmic events, but without knowing their height the possibilities are literally infinitesimal.

Durrington Walls / Woodhenge - Debunked Part One
The traditional view of Durrington Walls (Woodhenge) as a mystic/sacred site one of nonsense and poor modern interpretation of the existing evidence - the civilisation who made this prehistoric site were great engineers from a well organised society not a bunch of half dressed cavemen dragging stones around Salisbury plain. Robert John Langdon looks at the current ideas and debunks them for a more sensible logical solution.

'Superhenge' in the Stonehenge Landscape: The Durrington Walls Archaeological Dig 2016
Subscribe here: In this Megalithomania video Hugh Newman interviews archaeologists Mike Parker Pearson and Julian Richards and discusses the dig with archaeoastronomer Simon Banton. The Durrington Walls 'Superhenge' dig has come to an end. A mile away from Stonehenge, and right next to Woodhenge, Durrington was potentially the home of the megalith builders of Stonehenge. But were massive megaliths part of the 'Superhenge' or was something else discovered? Includes exclusive aerial footage.

Woodhenge was a timber monument comprising six concentric ovals of posts surrounded by a bank and ditch. It was probably a free-standing monument rather than a roofed building.

Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in the English county of Wiltshire, about 2 miles (3.2 km) west of Amesbury and 8 miles (13 km) north of Salisbury. One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge is the remains of a ring of standing stones set within earthworks. It is in the middle of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds.[1]
Archaeologists believe it was built anywhere from 3000 BC to 2000 BC, as described in the chronology below. Radiocarbon dating in 2008 suggested that the first stones were raised between 2400 and 2200 BC,[2] whilst another theory suggests that bluestones may have been raised at the site as early as 3000 BC (see phase 1 below).
The surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3100 BC. The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986 in a co-listing with Avebury Henge. It is a national legally protected Scheduled Ancient Monument. Stonehenge is owned by the Crown and managed by English Heritage, while the surrounding land is owned by the National Trust.
Archaeological evidence found by the Stonehenge Riverside Project in 2008 indicates that Stonehenge could have been a burial ground from its earliest beginnings.[5] The dating of cremated remains found on the site indicate that deposits contain human bone from as early as 3000 BC, when the ditch and bank were first dug. Such deposits continued at Stonehenge for at least another 500 years.[6] The site is a place of religious significance and pilgrimage in Neo-Druidry

10,000 - 6000 years ago seen the first Stonehenge monument, several huge pine posts were erected.
Stonehenge is mostly made up of sarcen stone from the Marlborough Downs 19 miles away to the north.
The outer circle and inner horseshoe of trilithions are sarcen stone.
The smaller innermost stones are bluestone from the Preseli hils in SW Wales, 150 miles away.
The bluestone is warm to touch, the sarcen is cold to the touch.
Other ancient sites in the area are the are 340 burial mounds, the cursus monument which is 3km long earthwork , the curses barrows, durrington walls and Woodhenge. Avebury is less than 20 miles away.
Woodhenge was originally a wooden structure similar to Stonehenge and is probably a bronze age site around 4000 years old.
Today concrete stumps mark the position of the original timbers.
The rings are oval with the long axis aligned to the mid summer sunrise.

Time Team Special 21 (2005) - Journey to Stonehenge (Durrington Walls, Wiltshire)
An international team of archaeologists is excavating Durrington Walls, Britain's biggest henge, which dwarfs nearby Stonehenge. Mike Parker Pearson explains to Tony and Mick his revolutionary theory about the connection between the two sites. A road leading from the henge to the river would bear out his theory. Meanwhile Phil is taking part in Time Team's biggest ever reconstruction, a great timber circle. Victor provides characteristic illustrations.

Woodhenge at Sunrise Celebration 2007
On the northwest hill of our previous site, is a 'woodhenge', aligned to celebrate the Summer Solstice at our first event in 2006. It has many intricate alignments, ley lines and was designed and built by geomancer Shaun Kirwan. It also aligns with a stone circle that Shaun and John Martineau built at The Big Green Gathering site in 2007, and even goes directly through Glastonbury Tor! A new 'Sunrise Circle' is planned for 2009, so watch this space to see how this progresses.
