Perth Academy first appears in 1542 when it was founded by the town council, still making Perth Academy one of the oldest schools in Scotland. Designed by Robert Reid, later the King’s architect, work on this building was started in October 1803, and finished for the start of the teaching year in 1807. Perth is a city in central Scotland, located on the banks of the River Tay. It is the administrative centre of Perth and Kinross council area and the historic county of Perthshire. Perth has been known as The Fair City since the publication of the story Fair Maid of Perth by Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott in 1828. During the later medieval period the city was also called St John's Toun or Saint Johnstoun by its inhabitants in reference to the main church dedicated to St John the Baptist. This name is preserved by the city's football team, St Johnstone F.C.
There has been a settlement at Perth since prehistoric times, on a natural mound raised slightly above the flood plain of the Tay, where the river could be crossed at low tide. The area surrounding the modern city is known to have been occupied since Mesolithic hunter-gatherers arrived more than 8000 years ago. Nearby Neolithic standing stones and circles also exist, dating from about 4000 BC, following the introduction of farming in the area.
The presence of Scone Abbey, home of the Stone of Destiny where the King of Scots was crowned, enhanced the early importance of the city. Perth became known as a 'capital' of Scotland, due to the frequent residence of the royal court. Royal Burgh status was soon given to the city by King William the Lion in the early 12th century. The city became one of the richest burghs in the country, doing trade with France, the Low Countries and Baltic Countries for goods such as Spanish silk and French wine. The Scottish Reformation also played a big role in the city with the sacking of the Houses of the Greyfriars and Blackfriars, after a sermon given by John Knox in St John's Kirk in 1559. The Act of Settlement later brought about Jacobite uprisings. The city was occupied by Jacobite supporters on three occasions (1689, 1715 and 1745). The founding of Perth Academy in 1760 helped to bring major industries, such as linen, leather, bleach and whisky, to the city. Given its location, Perth was perfectly placed to become a key transport centre with the coming of the railways, and its first station was built in 1848.
Today, Perth serves as a retail centre for the surrounding area. Following the decline of the whisky industry locally, the city's economy has now diversified to include insurance and banking. Due to its location, the city is often referred to as the Gateway to the Highlands. The Australian metropolis Perth took its name from the Scottish city. Perth is also twinned with Aschaffenburg in the German state of Bavaria.

Quarrymill Woodland walk, Perth.
As the name suggests, there have been both quarries and mills at the Quarrymill Woodland Park site dating back as far as the 14th century, although most of the known activity originates from much later. The Park itself was donated to the Trust by A K Bell in 1937. The earliest known records show a letter from Robert, King of Scots to the monks of Scone Abbey requesting permission to use stone from their quarries at Kincarrathie and Balcormoc (now Quarrymill) for the Kirk of Perth and the bridges of Perth and the Earn. The letter is dated 4th July 1328, and is the oldest record of activity at the Quarrymill site. The site at Kincarrathie has been filled in. It is also believed that stone from Quarrymill was used to construct Scone Abbey and, later may have been transported up river to build Stanley Mills. In 1574 a site known as Balchormack is shown to the north of the Annaty Burn and a site referred to as Quarrelmiln is shown slightly closer to the River Tay.
Sandstone extraction and weaving at Quarrymill was well underway by the 18th Century when there were numerous mills spinning cotton, extracting starch from potatoes for use in weaving and the textile industry and grinding bone to use in dyes and fertilisers. The traditional red 'Perth' sandstone was used widely for buildings and farm walls and can be seen extensively in the surrounding area. There are examples of the sandstone throughout the Woodland Walk, although some can only be seen through the natural plant life which has been allowed to flourish to enhance the walk itself.
The Annaty Burn which runs through the Woodland Park has a wealth of history associated with it. The area to the south of the burn and extending to Murrayshall was formerly known as 'St Ninian's Lands', and place names in that area may indicate a station of the 5th Century missionary. The name Annaty indicates a mother church, or a church which contains relics of the founder. The site of the church may be where diggings in 1942 revealed red sandstone foundations belonging to a small rectangular building, and there were also early hut circles visible here in the 19th Century. However, this theory is not fully substantiated.
A K Bell purchased the Scone Den in 1933 and directed the Trust to 'dedicate, equip and maintain it as a place of public resort'. During the intervening years the Trustees have met A K Bell's wishes and the Woodland Park is maintained to high standards and is enjoyed by the residents of Perth and visitors alike to this day.

Big Tree Country
A stunning video featuring footage shot from a helicopter as it flies over beautiful scenery in the heart of Scotland. The area, known as Perthshire Big Tree Country - is divided into six distinct clusters: Aberfeldy & Kenmore; Blair Atholl; Crieff & Strathearn; Dunkeld & Birnam; Perth & Blairgowrie; Pitlochry & the Road to the Isles.
Perthshire Big Tree Country is famous for its heritage trees, several of which are featured in the video. Watch out for the Fortingall Yew, oldest living organism in Europe; the Birnam Oak, made famous in Shakespeares MacBeth; the record-breaking Meikleour Beech Hedge, tallest in the world; and Niel Gows Oak, named after the well-known fiddler.
Narrated by one of Scotlands most famous plant collectors, David Douglas, the video begins in the grounds of Scone Palace where Douglas served his apprenticeship as a gardener. Born in Scone, Douglas is responsible for introducing many plant and tree species including the Douglas fir, Sitka spruce Scotlands most prolific forestry tree and sunflowers.
As it swoops over Kinnoull Hill Woodland Park (Scotlands first) and its iconic tower, the video provides a birds eye view of other historical buildings such as Scone Palace, the former crowning place of Scottish kings; Blair Castle; and the Hermitage. It also passes over the most famous view in Scotland, Queens View. Allegedly a favourite of Queen Victoria, the view is actually named after the wife of Robert the Bruce.
In addition to the famous names already mentioned, Perthshire Big Tree Country played host to Robert Rabbie Burns on his tour of the Highlands. The Birks of Aberfeldy takes its name from a song penned by Scotlands national bard. Rabbie is also believed to be responsible encouraging the then Duke of Atholl for the planting of the area around the Falls of Bruar following a petition to the duke in one of his poems.
But it isnt all about the trees. The River Tay runs through Big Tree Country, providing fantastic salmon fishing opportunities and a playground for the more adventurous white water rafters or canoeists. Equally the forests offer great mountain and trail biking runs and tracks suitable for all levels of walking criss cross many of the woodland sites and hills.
Finally, a host of wildlife calls Perthshire Big Tree Country home. Peregrine falcons, buzzards, kestrels and ospreys soar through the sky. During the autumn the roar of red deer stags can be heard during rutting season and roe deer are often spotted dashing through the woods. Red squirrels are shyer residents but are easy to see in Cluny House Gardens and occasionally rarer species such as black grouse and capercaillie are spotted.
