5 places you must visit in Tanzania
1. Zanzibar
Zanzibar island offers some of the best beaches in the world.
On the east coast, waves break over coral reefs and sand bars offshore.
Low tide reveals small pools of starfish, small minnows, and anemones.
Up north, ocean swimming is much less susceptible to the tides.
Smooth beaches and white sand make for dazzling days in the sun.
The port city of Stone Town dominates the west coast.
It makes a refreshing day-trip exploring the winding passageways of the old city.
On the south coast of Zanzibar lies the Menai Bay Conservation Area,
a sea turtle protection area for the endangered species that come to breed on the island.
Roads to the southeast coast take visitors through the Jozani Forest,
home to Zanzibar’s rare Red Colobus monkeys and a number of other primate and small antelope species.
2. Mt. Kilimanjaro
Hailed as Africa highest mountain and the fourth largest in the world,
Mt. Kilimanjaro stands 5896 metres above sea level.
It is one of the world’s most accessible high summits,
a beacon for visitors from around the world.
Those who reach Uhuru Point, the actual summit earn their climbing certificates.
But there is so much more to Kili than her summit.
At the 2,700m contour, the cultivated foot-slopes give way to the lush montane forest,
inhabited by elusive elephant, leopard, buffalo, the endangered duiker.
Above 4,000m, a surreal alpine desert supports little life other than a few hardy mosses and lichen.
Finally, the last vestigial vegetation gives way to a winter wonderland of ice and the magnificent beauty of the roof of the continent.
3. Serengeti
Serengeti is Tanzania’s largest and most famous national park.
At 14,763 square kilometres of a protected area, it borders Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Park.
The annual wildebeest migration through the Serengeti and the Masai Mara attract visitors from around the world.
In the wake of the migration, many of the less attention-grabbing features of the Serengeti are often overlooked.
The park has varied zones in which each ecosystem is subtly different.
Seronera in the centre of the park is the most popular and most easily visited area.
The Grumeti River in the Western Corridor offers dramatic river crossing experience during the wildebeest migration.
Maswa Game Reserve to the south offers a remote part of the park rewarding in its game-viewing and privacy.
Lobo near the Kenyan border offers a chance to see the plentiful game during the dry season.
Hot-air ballooning over the Serengeti plains has become a safari rite-of-passage for travel enthusiasts.
4. Ngorongoro
Often called ‘Africa’s Eden’ and the ’8th Natural Wonder of the World,
a visit to the crater is the main drawcard for tourists coming to Tanzania.
Within the crater rim, large herds of zebra and wildebeest graze nearby while sleeping lions laze in the sun.
At dawn, the endangered black rhinos return to the thick cover of the crater forests after grazing on dew-laden grass
This truly magical place is home to Olduvai Gorge, where the Dr.Leakey discovered the first human skeleton.
Hiking treks through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area are becoming an increasingly popular option.
5. Selous Game Reserve
It is one of the largest protected area in Africa with undisturbed human impact.
The reserve is home to a significant concentration of wild animal such as elephants, black rhino, cheetah, giraffe, hippos and crocodiles amongst other species.
The reserve also has an exceptionally high variety of habitats that include,
Miombo woodlands, open grasslands, riverine forests and swamps,
making it a valuable laboratory for ongoing ecological and biological processes.

Lake Manyara National Park
Stretching for 50km along the base of the rusty-gold 600-metre high Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara is a scenic gem, with a setting extolled by Ernest Hemingway as the loveliest I had seen in Africa.
The compact game-viewing circuit through Manyara offers a virtual microcosm of the Tanzanian safari experience.
From the entrance gate, the road winds through an expanse of lush jungle-like groundwater forest where hundred-strong baboon troops lounge nonchalantly along the roadside, blue monkeys scamper nimbly between the ancient mahogany trees, dainty bushbuck tread warily through the shadows, and outsized forest hornbills honk cacophonously in the high canopy.
Contrasting with the intimacy of the forest is the grassy floodplain and its expansive views eastward, across the alkaline lake, to the jagged blue volcanic peaks that rise from the endless Maasai Steppes. Large buffalo, wildebeest and zebra herds congregate on these grassy plains, as do giraffes -- some so dark in coloration that they appear to be black from a distance.
Inland of the floodplain, a narrow belt of acacia woodland is the favoured haunt of Manyara's legendary tree-climbing lions and impressively tusked elephants. Squadrons of banded mongoose dart between the acacias, while the diminutive Kirk's dik-dik forages in their shade. Pairs of klipspringer are often seen silhouetted on the rocks above a field of searing hot springs that steams and bubbles adjacent to the lakeshore in the far south of the park.
Manyara provides the perfect introduction to Tanzania's birdlife. More than 400 species have been recorded, and even a first-time visitor to Africa might reasonably expect to observe 100 of these in one day. Highlights include thousands of pink-hued flamingos on their perpetual migration, as well as other large waterbirds such as pelicans, cormorants and storks.

BANDIT:
Bandit is a 2 year old rescue dog saved from a kill shelter in California. He was horribly matted, dirty and looked like a Terrier/Shih Tzu mix. After he was groomed it became clear he is a purebred Parti Poodle. A fairly unusual dog, a Parti Poodle has a unique coloration only possible when both parents are purebred Parti Poodles. The gene necessary to produce the coloration is recessive and both parents must have it. I would have loved him either way but am blessed to have him as he is. =8v)
