Woodstock Tower
Short hike from Little Fort Campground up to the Woodstock Tower in George Washington National Forest
Tibbet Knob Hike at Great North Mountain
Great North Mountain divides Virginia and West Virginia in the area of Shenandoah County, VA, and Hardy County, WV. West of the Virginia town of Woodstock, in the George Washington National Forest is Wolf Gap Recreation Area. This is the most popular start point for both Big Schloss and Tibbet Knob. The Tibbet Knob Trail is short but rated difficult due to steep terrain and a couple of spots that require rock scrambling. The reward for the effort is the awesome view from the rocky cliffs near the summit of the knob. This hike is slightly less crowded than the more popular nearby Big Schloss hike. I didn't see anyone on the trail. I encounter some patches of ice and deep snow which added to the difficulty. I was unable to even video one of the scrambles due to the ice.

Hike to High Knob Firetower on Shenandoah Mountain,Wv/Va 8-12-16
This 2 mile out and back hike starts in the George Washington National Forest, on Shenandoah Mountain, in Pendelton County, West Virginia, and ends at a cool lookout tower in Rockingham County, Virginia. Parking, and the trailhead, is located in West Virginia, on National Route 33 just near the Virginia/West Virginia state line. The hike is moderate, and in retrospect I would rate it 3.5 out of 5 Billygoats, although my girlfriend gives it a solid 4. For a longer, much more strenuous hike, one can start at the Brandywine Recreation Area, in West Virginia, and climb all the way up Shenandoah Mountain to reach the tower. Also, there are many other trails to explore in the general vicinity. This was our first trip to the George Washington National Forest and it did not disappoint. We plan on visiting again in the near future. Thanks for watching!
High Knob - George Washington National Forest
Pics and HD video of a 3.1 mile hike to the summit of High Knob in the George Washington National Forest. There is an old historic stone lookout tower on the summit. The purpose of this hike was to see it before it gets torn down like all the other towers here in Virginia.

Hiking Meneka Peak and Signal Knob - George Washington National Forest
Video Description

Twitter:
This hike takes place in the George Washington National Forest south of the town of Strasburg, VA. The highest point is Meneka Peak at 2,393 ft., however the best views are from the Buzzard Rock Overlook, Fort Valley Overlook and Signal knob (2,106 ft.).
The 1st half of this hike is dominated by great views of the surrounding mountains, farmland and towns, while the second half is a fairly standard walk through a mature hardwood forest. Here is the kicker, if you are hiking to enjoy the view; I would recommend making this an out-and-back turning around at Signal Knob, as the second half of the hike offers very little in respect to views, or even interesting terrain.
Signal Knob was used by both Union and Confederate armies during the US Civil War. The Confederates occupied it from 1862 to 1864, and it was a key observation point for the Battle of Cedar Creek. On August 14, 1864, a group of Union troops defeated a detachment of the 61st Georgia Volunteer Infantry and took control.
Route: Signal Knob Trail to Meneka Peak Trail (out-and-back), continuing on the Signal Knob Trail past Signal knob descending to the Tuscarora Trail to the Massenutten Trail. Visit Hiking Upward for details of the loop (
The George Washington National Forest:
Directions to the Trailhead: The signal knob parking area is located on Fort Valley Rd, which is convenient to both I-66 and I-81. It takes approximately an hour and a half to reach the trailhead from Washington DC to the east and via I-66, I-81 provides access to the area from points north and south. The trailhead is located at the north end of the signal knob parking area, just off of Fort Valley Rd.
