2017 Walter Dean Myers Award for Outstanding Children's Literature
The novel, March Book Three, by Rep. John Lewis, Andrew Aydin and illustrator Nate Powell received the second annual Walter Dean Myers Award for outstanding children's literature in a young adult category. The Walter Award is given in honor of children's author, Walter Dean Myers (1937-2014). Myers was the third National Ambassador for Young People's Literature and a champion of diverse literature. Three other books honored included Watched: Someone Is Always Watching by Marina Budhos, If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo and The Sun Is Also A Star Nicola Yoon. Speakers included Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden and authors Ellen Oh, Rachel Renée Russell, Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely. The award is cosponsored by the nonprofit We Need Diverse Books.
