Explore Dove Cottage - once home to Dorothy and William Wordsworth
This video is from ‘William Wordsworth: Poetry, People and Place’ is a free online course by the University of Lancaster available on FutureLearn.com
December 1799 marked the start of William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy making a real home together at Dove Cottage in Grasmere. After William married Mary Hutchinson in 1802, Dorothy continued to live with them and to help look after their children. Dorothy’s life was a remarkable one for a woman of her day. Famously, William wrote of Dorothy in one of his poems: ‘She gave me eyes, she gave me ears’.
This film takes us into Dove Cottage itself with Professor Sharon Ruston to explore this house as a home. We see various objects associated with Dorothy and think about the experience of living and writing here.

Wordsworth Country, Part V, 'The Garden' by Sheila, April 28, 2014
What a wonderful opportunity to walk in Wordsworth's garden which he shared with his sister Dorothy and wife Mary----no wonder poems were created here and 200 years ago it would have been magical--ultra peaceful and quiet no main roads rumbling with the sound of lorries etc... in those days.... I wonder if the same family of butterflies still visit his garden and 'stay and rest a while', take sanctuary.....A truly romantic cottage not unlike the cottage in Nether Stowey in Somerset, where Coleridge lived for a while and where they frequently met to discuss the World, their work------well worth a visit to Somerset and the Quantocks a place loved by Wordsworth and Coleridge and Dorothy and where I like ';to wander lonely as a cloud.....'
