Action Item #1: Match Your Talents with Your Passion

You can be really good at something but not love it. You can also love doing something else but not be really good at it. To be successful as an entrepreneur you need find the opportunity to combine what you love doing with what you're really good at.

According to Ron Joyce: I think people who excel in anything are often totally dedicated to it, but are only really good at one thing. I look at the great athletes of all time, like Michael Jordan, who went from basketball to baseball and it didn't work. Or Wayne Gretzky, who probably wouldn't have been great at anything but hockey.

Are you like Michael Jordan trying to play baseball by doing something you love but aren't really that good at? If you're struggling to get your company to the next level try doing some soul searching to see if you've matched up your talents with what you love doing in the best way possible.

Action Item #2: Treat Your Franchisees as Partners

Franchising can be a great way to build a business because you don't need to fund it yourself and you can create an army of hard working managers who have a self-interest in seeing you succeed. However, franchising is not a bulletproof concept and may fail when the franchisors don't provide the right support to their franchisees.

Here's Ron Joyce's advice: It was my philosophy to treat the franchise owners as partners. He followed through by creating a 'Donut University', a central training facility where new franchise owners could go to learn the ropes of running the business and operating in the fast-paced environment. He also established regular meetings, a toll-free phone line, and field evaluations to provide support to his franchisees. He was willing to do whatever it took to get his partners off the ground and running.

The result? Today, only five percent of the company's stores are corporate, while the rest are locally and operated owned franchises. With average profit margins ranging from 15 to 20 percent, owning a Tim Hortons franchise is a promising venture. In fact, more than half of all franchisees own more than one unit. Treat your franchisees fairly and give them the support they need to flourish and they'll build your business for you.

Action Item #3: Create a Unique Point of Differentiation

If you want to stand out and win business from your competitors then you need to do things differently from them. If there's nothing different about you, why should customers choose you when there are probably more established companies they could go with?

When Joyce took over Tim Hortons he wanted to stand out from all the other coffee chains. To do that, Joyce implemented a new set of business practices that focused on keeping things Always Fresh. He began to insist that all Tim Hortons coffee pots be cleaned three times a day and that no coffee be older than twenty minutes from the time the brewer stops dripping. All grounds were also to be thrown out immediately afterwards. But it didn't just stop at coffee. The temperatures of all cheese products and sandwiches were to be checked every other hour, as with soups. Donuts were to have a shelf life of no more than eight hours and could also be made to order. Bagels and other breads were also to be sold for no more than eight hours after they were made, while cookies, danishes, and croissants could go up for twelve hours. Only enough cakes for a given day were to be baked in any one store.

Customers began to come to Tim Hortons because they had the freshest products available and sales soared. What is your unique point of differentiation? Is it really something customers care about and are you very different from your competitors? If not, it's time to go back to the drawing board and create a value proposition worth betting the company on.

Since its 1984 launch in Michael Dell's dorm , Dell has evolved from a PC maker to a $90 billion in revenue and services in storage, servers, cloud infrastructure and data security. Since then, CEO, Michael Dell has taken his company public, private and then public again as it tried to keep up with changing consumer and business customer needs.

Dell's first IPO happened in 1988 when “Dell Computer Corp.” went public at $8.50 a share with a market capitalization of $85 million. In 1992, Michael Dell became the youngest Fortune 500 CEO at 27. By 2001, Dell had overtaken Compaq as the world’s largest PC maker.

But by 2013, demand for PCs stalled as tablets and smartphones became more popular. Later that year, Michael Dell took the company private. In 2015, Dell purchased data storage company EMC, a deal that still stands as the largest technology acquisition of all time. In 2018, Dell returned to the public markets as Dell Technologies.

As President Trump slaps huge tariffs on imports of steel and aluminium into the US, there is talk of an imminent all-out trade war. But is this really just Trump-style negotiating?

The US president, Donald Trump has announced 25% tariffs on steels imports into the US and 10% tariffs on aluminium imports.

Although the main target for these tariffs is believed to be China, other countries such as Mexico and Canada are effected as is the customs union of the European Union.

Although retaliating against the US by imposing import tariffs on US imports into the EU, Mexico or Canada could spark a wider trade war with the consequence of reducing global trade by about six percent according to the OECD, those parties have drawn up plans to do just that.

The EU has placed a complaint with the World Trade Organisation over this and certain imports from the US are being targeted with:

Canada imposing 25% tariffs on steel products such as piping, sheet and railway tracks as well as ten percent on such things as Yoghurt, soya sauce, strawberry jam, Orange juice, whiskies, coffee, soups and waters, Manicure and pedicure products, hair lacquers, shaving foam, toilet paper and dishwasher detergents.

Mexico will target Flat steel, hot and cold foil products, and piping. Cold cuts, pork chops and sausages. Berries, grapes, apples, various cheeses and lamps.

And in the EU: Bourbon whiskey, orange juice and cranberries. Jeans, T-shirts and tobacco. Corn and other agricultural products. Steel and industrial products. Cosmetics, consumer goods, motorbikes and pleasure boats. Snuff and chewing tobacco.

And the US motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson is already bracing itself for a hit to its exports. So, if you live in the EU and you're trying to offload a Milwaukee Hog, it might be worth hanging on a bit to see if the prices go up!

Anyway, a big point to note is that the latest UK steel import and export figures I can find from reports in 2017, show that the UK is the 18th largest exporter and importer of steel in the world and we imported 5.2 million metric tonnes of steel in 2016 and exported only 3.4 million metric tonnes. We are a net importer of steel.

Now, our response to this move by the US is tied to what the EU wants to do. We cannot shape a response to suit the UK.

As sovereign, independent nations, the Canadians and Mexicans can choose how they respond for the benefit of their own economies, hence the products they have chosen to target being different - the UK cannot do this.

Further the EU, by imposing such wide measures across the board with talk of safety in numbers and hitting the US hard, might well trigger further responses from the US etc etc etc and the downward spiral commences.

And anyway, the real problem at the root of all of this appears to be a global glut of steel. With producers struggling to offload the stuff, and some resort to breaking the rules to do it.

Back in October 2017 John Ferriola, chief executive of US group Nucor, said at the World Steel Association’s annual general meeting in Brussels that our current global overcapacity issue is bad and it results in a high level of exports that in some cases are illegally subsidised and dumped in other nations.

Now, having a viable steel producing capability (and aluminium come to that) is an important facet of defence to any sovereign nation - just because you don't build tanks today doesn't mean you won't need to build them quickly tomorrow.

So protecting your own steel production industry up to a point is understandable, but many believe that Trump has overplayed that claim by quite a margin.

But looking at the retaliatory measures that the EU wants to impose, are all those in the interests of the UK? Or could we do better, if we had control, by just adjusting our own metals import tariffs as well, so as to target the source of the problem without causing a global economic slowdown?

TechCrunch’s Startup Battlefield is the world’s preeminent startup competition. The Gulf oil spill is probably the largest event to have happened in the last 1,000 years.
It is bigger than 9/11,
bigger than Katrina,
bigger and more complex than the CIA/Bush assassination of JFK, that caused the Vietnam war.
The Gulf oil spill combines every danger of industrial capitalism into one toxic witches brew, on a world scale.
It is so large most people cannot get their heads around the issue, to figure out a solution.
Just stopping the leak won't solve the problem.
Just cleaning the oil out of the ocean won't solve the problem.
Yes, we must stop using oil. But how?
To do that we first must totally reorganize our society into using the most powerful energy source on earth,...
solar power.
To do that we first build 1 million new hillside solar powered houses, so everyone can tap the geo-thermal power from the center of the earth, which will then keep houses at 55 degrees F, even in Minnesota,
using the 7,000 F heat from the center of the earth.
We have built 4 houses like this.
All you do is dig down to bedrock
to tap the heat from the center of the earth.

You can install solar power in your apartment today by just getting a car battery & charging it up using a solar panel. This will run your computer during a power failure, like a quake.

This massive house building project, Manhattan 2011, will create 50 million real jobs.
Leaders must communicate this idea of solar houses, to the majority, to get the first million solar BERM houses built by 2012, to make the quantum level shift from oil to solar by 2013.
This is a huge project. Bigger than anything than has ever been done on earth before.
Bigger than flying to the moon.
Bigger than the joint space station with the Russians & USA.
Bigger than the settling of America.
It is a project so huge, it will take total cooperation between the Russians, Chinese, Brazil, the US & every nation on earth. Can this be done? We have no choice.
Necessity is the mother of invention.
