This Video shows Intermittent Spring, also called Periodic Spring or Intermittent Falls. It is located about 5 miles from Afton, Wyoming. It is easy and does not go up any significant hills until you get to the actual spring. It is located in Bridger-Teton National Forest and is believed to be the largest intermittent spring in the World. There is camping that you will pass on the road to the spring. Periodic Springs, Afton Wyoming
The Intermittent Springs is located in Swift Creek Canyon through Afton Wyoming. It is a pretty awesome sight to see, but not year round. Fall is a great time to visit this area for clear water, nice color, and a short hike.

Periodic, or Intermittent Spring is located just east of Afton Wyoming in the Swift River Canyon. The spring exits from a sheer cliff wall and ebbs and flows according to volume established by spring snow melt. It's less than a mile hike up the canyon through spectacular views of fin rocks and razor back canyon walls.

A rhythmic spring (also: ebb and flow spring, periodic spring, intermittent spring) is a cold water spring from which the flow of water either varies or starts and stops entirely, over a fairly regular time-scale of minutes or hours. Compared to continuously-flowing springs, rhythmic springs are uncommon, with the number worldwide estimated in 1991 to be around one hundred.
Although the cause of the periodicity in flow is not known for certain, the most accepted theory (first postulated in the early 18th century) is that as groundwater flows continuously into a cavern, it fills a narrow tube that leads upwards from near the base of the cavern, then downwards to the spring. As the water level reaches the high point of the tube, it creates a siphon effect, sucking water out of the chamber. Eventually air rushes into the tube and breaks the siphon, stopping the flow if there is no other source feeding the spring, or reducing the flow if there is a continuous flow from another non-siphon source.
In 2006 the University of Utah studied the Intermittent Spring in Swift Creek canyon in Star Valley, Wyoming, United States. Kip Solomon, a hydrologist at the University concluded that The spring water's gas content has now been tested . The data strongly suggests the water was exposed to air underground; strong support for the siphon theory.
The Intermittent Spring in Wyoming, mentioned above, is the largest rhythmic spring in the world.
Another major rhythmic spring is the Gihon Spring in the City of David in Jerusalem, Israel, which is of great historical, archaeological, and cultural importance because it is what made possible the human settlement in ancient Jerusalem.
Pliny the Younger---who is famous for his accurate description of the Vesuvius eruption of AD 79---also accurately descripted a rhythmic spring in the last letter of Book IV. This rhythmic spring is still acting to the same time scale today (Villa Pliniana spring in Como, Italy).

We are in the town of Afton, Wyoming where we turned around to go back to the Honda dealer to buy some oil so that we could change out our oil. We had about 4000 miles on the oil by now. After we got into the store, they had every kind of oil for a Honda except the kind that we wanted. Oh well...we enjoyed talking to the folks that either owned it or ran it...really enjoyable, friendly folks. I dont remember the name of the little lady that took us to their oil room, but she was a cutie. If you go to Afton...stop in at the Honda store and tell the folks that the 3 Texans said HOWDY.
