The Sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha in Kandy Sri Lanka
In the cultural heart land of the island is Kandy, Sri Lanka's second largest city, which is nestled at the foothills of the hill country and lies on the banks of the Mahawelli River.
The sacred tooth relic of the Buddha, symbolic of the sovereignty over the island is preserved here in its own temple.
Ever since the 4th century when Buddha’s tooth was hidden from sacrilegious hands in an Orissan princess’s hair, the relic has grown in repute and holiness in Sri Lanka and throughout the Buddhist world.
As a tourist, one can share, along with the local people the flower offering to Buddha and if you are lucky, you might even witness the ancient cleansing ritual, carried out by the Buddhist monks prior to entering the inner sanctum of the sacred tooth relic.
A visit to Sri Lanka in August will guarantee the sight of the famous Pera Hera festival, when the Buddha’s tooth is paraded around the city on the back of an elephant in what is probably Asia’s biggest celebration.

Dalai Lama Offers Silver Bowls to the Tooth Relic in Kandy
World Buddhist leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s 82nd birthday was celebrated in the ancient Palace of the holy Tooth Relic in Kandy, Sri Lanka on Friday. Two sterling silver bowls were offered on this day to offer the dana (meals) to the holy tooth relic of the Buddha. The sterling silver bowls offering took place approximately after 400 years and these bowls are expected to remain three or four centuries until they cannot be used again. The previously offered sterling silver bowls are expected to be sent to the museum.
The bowl offering was done to request long life and good health for His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama from the holy Tooth Relic of the Buddha which is world famous for miracles and super powers. People believe the deities in and around the holy Tooth Relic Palace are very positive and help people in numerous ways. The members of the Sri Lankan Tibetan Buddhist Brotherhood Society organized special prayers for good health and longevity for His Holiness the Dalai Lama. We also did many offerings to the holy Tooth Relic on this day praying that soon His Holiness would be able to pay a visit to the palace to pay homage to the holy Tooth Relic.
A grand midday alms giving for 82 Buddhist monks including Asgiriya Mahanayake Thero, Anunayake Thero, Malwatte Anunayake Thero, Amarapura Anunayake Thero and Geshe Thupten Chodak from the Sera Jey Monastery was conducted in the Tooth Relic Palace on the same day and all the monks chanted to send good wishes for the Dalai Lama and all sentient beings in the universe. During the ‘Anushasana’ the Asgiriya Anunayake Most Venerable Dr. Anamaduwe Dhammadassi Thero thanked His Holiness the Dalai Lama for taking dharma to the world to make a world of peace and compassion. Also the thero said that they are lamenting the plight of the Tibetans and they thank India for giving shelter to His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his people.

1. Polonnaruwa Ancient City (Ancient Buddhist Sites in Sri Lanka)
The ancient capital city of Polonnaruwa is an important Buddhist archaeological site dating back to the 12th century. This brief introduction offers a visual idea of the architectural landscape when planning a visit to this UNESCO World Heritage site.

Narrative Text:
Throughout history in Sri Lanka, emperors of each dynasty deeply venerated Buddhism. We find in Polonnaruwa that different emperors built ornate palaces to enshrine the Buddha, Bodhisattvas and even housed the most precious Buddhist relics in one of the palaces. If you make a walk around the area, you will notice and appreciate that this is like an outdoor museum of Buddhist architecture.

There are fire-dances, whip-dances, Kandyan dances and various other cultural dances. The elephants are usually adorned with lavish garments. The festival ends with the traditional 'diya-kepeema'.
