A Walk on the edge of Insanity!
Zhuilu Old Trail(錐麓古道) is the most famous one due to the magnificent scenery. Though the beautiful view does attract people, it’s not an easy challenge if you want to visit Zhuilu Old Trail. The narrow path, physical energy required and park entry permit are the reasons that stop people for coming.
The Zhuilu Old Road, the remains of the Old Cross-Hehuan Mountain Road, is the only Culture/historic Area in Taroko National Park.
Currently, the east 3.1 km of the trail is open to hikers. (the rest of trail remains closed due to the rockfalls damages.) Starting from Zhuilu Suspension Bridge, the trail leads to the Cliff Outpost, where hikers must doubleback to the trail entrance in order to exit. Due to the unique characteristics of the Zhuilu Old Road, entrance is limited per day to 96 persons on weekdays and 156 persons on weekends and holidays. Visitors are required to apply for a park entry permit. If a typhoon or other natural disaster occurs, the trail will be closed and permits for the closed period will be automatically invalidated. Please apply for a new permit once the trail is reopened.
Zhuilu Old Road is part of the Old Cross-Hehuan Mountain Road, an important connection between Truku villages in the early days. Originally the trail was only 30 cm wide, barely enough for two feet side by side. In 1917, the Japanese conscripted local indigenous men and expanded the trail width to 1.5 m. Zhuilu was then used for transportation as well as the movement of artillery. Hanging only by a rope around their waist, the local indigenous men used dynamite on the cliff walls to clear the rock for tunnels, extremely difficult and dangerous work.
It’s called “Zhuilu Cliff” and is also known as “The Sky Trail of Taiwan”.
Safety Information:
This trail is rugged along much of its length and the cliff section is very narrow. Do not attempt it if lacking fitness, scared of heights or suffering from heart disease.
The weather in the mountains is very changeable. In the afternoon, wind and fog are common. Please be careful and stay warm.
Zhuilu Cliff Section is around 500 meters long (2.6K-3.1K). When crossing the cliff: (1)Do not use your cellphone, run, jump, or play, and do not get too close to the edge. (2)Walk as close to the inside edge of the trail as you can and grip the rope at all times; when passing others coming the other way, be careful, wait in a spacious place and give way. (3)When taking pictures, please be careful.
How To Get There?
▸Bus: Take a Hualien Bus(No. 1133A/302) bound for Tianxiang, Luoshao, or Lishan, and alight at Swallow Grotto (Yanzikou).
▸Drive: Head west on the Central Cross-Island Highway. The Swallow Grotto is approx. 500 m after exiting from the Xipan Tunnel.

A little run in Taipei County
Was in Taipei for a few days on a business trip. Did a 10k round the Tamsui river area (Sam Tiong to Taipei and back). The air was nice and cool and the roads were much nicer, yet the traffic still had its moments; the polution here was noticable, too. Anyway, all in all a good little trot.

Qingjing has been dubbed “Foggy Eden,” and its ambience has also given rise to another moniker that has taken deeper hold with the general public, “Little Switzerland.” As you approach the mountaintop-hugging enclave from the lowlands you’ll notice that the architecture, with the multistory homestays/inns prominent, has a distinctive European-manor flavor. This movement was kickstarted with the building, and instant island-wide renown, of a large inn called The Old England in 2009. In the years since then, the enjoyment of afternoon tea has become a Taiwan fad, and The Old England and other Qingjing establishments add sublime “up-in-the-heavens” tableaux to the experience.
The impressive Tudor manor-style complex is the realized dream of a Taiwan flatlander who fell in love with old English-style architecture while resident in the small anglophile Canadian city of Victoria. At the same time harboring a love for Qingjing’s transcendental surroundings, he wanted to encourage a more genteel demeanor for the community, which to that point was dominated by accommodations and eateries of a more rustic nature.
The Old England introduced the afternoon tea tradition to Qingjing, and its service remains the most popular. Served 11:30am~4pm (NT$500 per serving) in its plush chandeliered restaurant, its English-style tea features Earl Grey Tea and a merry-go-round of delicacies, created by a dessert master, served on a three-tiered tray. Changed seasonally, the treats go from savory at bottom to sweet at top, ranging from (on this Travel in Taiwan trip) a schweinshaxe mini-kebab and bacon scallion Danish pastry to a canelé and macaron.

While The Old England faces the mighty Qilai Ridge to the east, the Impression Nordic Manor Club faces southwest toward the indigenous village of Wushe, the deep Wushe Reservoir below, and the mountain-basin town of Puli far beyond, back down along the river-valley route that brought you up from the western plains. The façade of this inn is modernistic with Tudor-style flourishes; inside and on the large outdoor deck with infinity pool, the lines are Scandinavian-clean. While The Old England immerses you in sumptuous, quiet-inspiring Victorian-style trappings, the Impression Nordic has a congenial party atmosphere – captured in the use of “club” in the name – with a putting-green facility, a slide hill, and a large gym joining the deck/infinity pool.
The bright, sunny first-floor restaurant looks out directly over the deck/pool area. Afternoon tea, which features a full buffet set-up, is served 3~5pm (NT$900 per person). The panoply of delectables includes tangerine smoked duck mini-toast, smoked salmon rolls, yogurt shrimp mini-toast, spaghetti marinara (and alfredo), ham and cheese finger sandwiches, European-style cookies, fresh fruit and juices, and numerous other selections. And as at The Old England, fresh-brew premium coffee is available. As well, imported wine and whisky are displayed in chiller buckets on the buffet bar for diners’ gratis enjoyment. This generous “party club” spirit is also in evidence in the evening, when gratis wines and spirits are made available to guests in the deck/pool area.

Taiwan is not the first destination to come to mind when you think about diving holidays. It’s probably not even second or third, but as I found out recently – diving in Green Island Taiwan is definitely worth considering. It provides some of the best scuba diving island wide as it is one of Taiwan’s top diving destinations. There are a lot of organized trips and packages, but you can quite easily organize something yourself with a little planning.
Green Island is a small volcanic island located in the south east of Taiwan. It is the 4th largest island making up Taiwan. It is located about 21 miles (33km) from the city of TaiTung in the Pacific Ocean. What makes Green Island so attractive as a diving destination is very clear water with visibility usually 30M or more, year round diving with warm water temperatures in the range 24~29˚C, abundant fringing coral reefs with healthy soft and hard coral growth, rich diverse marine life compared to the main island (though mostly smaller fish and some mid-sized), lots of convenient shore diving, as well as boat diving.
