Wray Castle NT & Ambleside 2013
Wray Castle is a Victorian neo-gothic building built in 1840 by the retired Liverpool surgeon Dr James Dawson. The house and grounds have belonged to the National Trust since 1929 and this April, as it is now open to visitors, we decided to pay a visit. The Castle inside had been stripped of everything before the National Trust took it over and the guide who showed us around told us of their plans for the next four years. It would have been nice to see it as it was when first occupied back in the 19th century and the views are lovely with walks down to the shores of Lake Windermere. Suitable for Children and Family viewing

Lake District - Wray Castle Windermere
Hi, Here is a view of Wray Castle on the banks of Lake Winderemere.
The house was built in 1840 for a retired Liverpudlian surgeon, James Dawson, who built it along with the neighboring Wray Church using his wife's fortune. After Dawson's death in 1875 the estate was inherited by his nephew, Edward Preston Rawnsley. In 1877 Edward's cousin, Hardwicke Rawnsley, took up the appointment of vicar of Wray Church. To protect the countryside from damaging development, Hardwicke Rawnsley, building on an idea propounded by Ruskin, conceived of a National Trust that could buy and preserve places of natural beauty and historic interest for the nation.
The house has an association with another key player in the National Trust, Beatrix Potter, who summered there when she was 16 in 1882.

Places to see in ( Ambleside - UK )
Ambleside is a town in Cumbria, in North West England. Historically within the county of Westmorland, Ambleside is situated at the head of Windermere, England's largest water. The town is within the Lake District National Park. Ambleside is also home to the headquarters of Brathay Exploration Group, a youth charity based just beyond Clappersgate on the road to Hawkshead.
Ambleside is administered by South Lakeland District Council and forms part of the Lakes civil parish but from 1894 to 1935 it was a separate urban district council. ‘Steamers' (in reality diesel-powered ferries) run to Bowness-on-Windermere and Lakeside offering fine views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Ambleside is a base for hiking, mountaineering and mountain biking. It has a number of hotels, guest houses, pubs and restaurants as well as shops. In particular, there are a number of shops selling equipment for walkers and climbers in the town. Ambleside is a popular starting point for the Fairfield horseshoe, a hillwaking ridge hike.
Ambleside features an oceanic climate, but being within the Lake District it does experience higher annual rainfall than the average for the North-West of England. Parts of the town have been flooded on numerous occasions, with the River Rothay breaking its banks during Storm Desmond in December 2015.

The National Trust site of Wray Castle in Cumbria offers some wonderful views of the Lake District and wooded walks.
Once a hotel, Beatrix Potter stayed here with her family before she became successful, and is said that the local vicar suggested that she should have her stories published.
During this visit, the Bluebells were at their best.
