I-8, Historic US 80 East -The Kumeyaay Hwy, Ocean Beach Fwy - San Diego (BEGIN) to Alpine, CA
Interstate 8 is one of the routes I have been waiting to film and I'm so happy I finally got a chance to. I-8 is the modern successor of US 80 in California and western Arizona, but today we'll be focusing on the portion within the San Diego area. Part of what would become US 80 and ultimately I-8 was originally LRN 12, defined in California's first highway bond act in 1909. The route ran from San Diego to El Centro, and like most routes defined in 1909, took a couple years to begin construction. The first route was built by an automobile club, who built a plank road through the worst part of the desert sand dunes in order to facilitate travel in 1912. This was later adopted by California around 1915, along with half the bridge over the Colorado River into Arizona.
Paving started in the late 1910's and continued into the late 1920's, with most of LRN 12 being paved in 1926 with the only portions remaining unpaved lying between the towns of Alpine and Boulevard and a segment near Mountain Springs. In 1926 the first US Highways were adopted and signed, with the entirety of LRN 12 being signed as part of US 80. US 80 and LRN 12 originally started at the intersection of Park Blvd and Market Street, continuing north on Park Ave to El Cajon Blvd where they turned east. El Cajon Blvd intersects Fairmount Ave, where in 1934 US 80 met CA 71. CA 71 would co-route with US 80 back to Market St in Downtown San Diego. CA 71 became US 395 in 1935.
From there US 80 continued into the city of El Cajon, where El Cajon Blvd merged onto and became Main St. At 2nd St, Main St curves from heading due east to northeast and parallels the modern I-8 Freeway. Old US 80 closely follows I-8 from there, continuing in segments separated by off ramps as Route 8 Business, Olde Hwy 80, and Alpine Blvd.
LRN 12 was later extended in 1933 without US 80, co-routing itself with along US 101 on Market and Atlantic Streets to Barnett Ave - north of the airport - where it went west, curved onto Lytton and turned left onto Rosecrans St. It then turned right onto Cañon St, merged onto Catalina Blvd and ended at Point Loma. US 101 was later moved off Market onto Pacific Hwy (now Harbor Dr and Pacific Hwy) in 1943, with that portion being transferred to US 80 and 395 to meet US 101 at Market and Pacific Hwy.
In 1948, after the Fairmont Parkway failed to address traffic issues on US 395, the Cabrillo 'Parkway' (now CA 163) was built and US 395 was moved onto it. US 80 was then moved off Park Blvd and onto the freeway by adding a small segment of Washington St near the western end of El Cajon Blvd. The 'Parkway' ended north of downtown, where southbound traffic was put onto 10th Ave and northbound traffic took 11th Ave. Both highways continued to take Market St to meet US 101.
In 1954, LRN 12 was moved from following Market, co-routing up Pacific Hwy and turning on Barnett to continuing north on Rosecrans past Lytton to Camino del Rio, where it met the Cabrillo Parkway. US 80 was then routed for the first time over this portion of LRN 12. It stayed on El Cajon Blvd but instead US 80 West going south on the Cabrillo Parkway it went north, to Camino del Rio where it exited to head west. It intersected US 101 at Pacific Hwy, then dipped south onto Rosecrans St and followed LRN 12 to Point Loma.
In 1955, US 80 was moved off El Cajon Blvd past the city of El Cajon and onto Alvarado Canyon Rd and Camino del Rio. This moved US 80 out of downtown San Diego entirely, putting it in the valley just north of downtown. The interchange with US 395/Cabrillo Pkwy was built to freeway standards expecting US 80 to be upgraded.
Upgrade they did. The first section of the US 80 Freeway to be built was in El Cajon, bypassing Main St entirely. With the 1964 renumbering, shields went up along US 80 identifying it as part of the new Interstate 8. I-8 opened in it's entirety in the San Diego Area in 1969, but ended at I-5. US 80 past the interchange had been transferred to LRN 209 in 1963 and became CA 209 in 1969, and the freeway west of I-5 - The Ocean Beach Freeway - remained unsigned, but was Legislative Route 109. The Ocean Beach Freeway ultimately became part of I-8 in 1972. (Fun Fact: the Ocean Beach was originally supposed to run from Pacific Hwy to Mission Bay via Midway Dr. This changed with the Great Renumbering.) The segment of US 80 that became CA 209 between Pacific Hwy and Point Loma was later deleted from the Highway System in 2003.

running in Conquistador ruins land - in Alpine, Ca(part 3; the boring part)
This is one of my favorite runs. As it turns out, my little cross-country run has history. Word out is that these are Conquistadors who built it(with Native american manual labor). The ruins are meager; a little water well is the most exotic structure; but, the Conquistadors also built a much more exciting water dam not to far from Alpine in Mission Trains park, San Diego.
Reportedly, these trails I tend to like running on also were the path that people came through hundreds of years ago in the western migrations. I mean like people got in their wagons and came west from the East coast of America in like the 1800s.
The viewing is a bit bumpy. I had run the Chelsea King 5K just two days prior; i hoped to be pretty much recovered and to run this good and hard to show how exciting this is for me; but, my legs never really felt like getting up to that kind of speed; still, my legs ran fine even if they never felt like getting up to a sprint.

Unknown creature captured on trail camera
An international team has returned from investigating the creature known as Sasquatch with a clear image that two world experts have been unable to identify.
The image and accompanying 1 sec film clip was taken by a trail camera in the team's camp at approx. 02:30 on Tuesday 4th September 2012 in the North Cascades National Park, Washington State, an area renowned for Sasquatch activity.
The team spent two weeks in the area and although they experienced a plethora of associated Sasquatch activity, rock-throwing, screams, unexplained noises, they objectively could not say what these incidents were caused by.
The image, however, shows an unidentifiable object situated between an extinguished campfire and two team members who were sleeping outside unaware.
The image and film clip were sent to Jeff Meldrum, Professor of Anatomy and Anthropology at Idaho State University and to Ian Redmond O.B.E., a field biologist for investigation. Despite thorough analysis they have been unable to come to any conclusion on the evidence presented -- but neither have they disregarded it as fake or immediately explainable.
Notes for Editors:
Extreme Expeditions Ltd (EE Ltd) who organised and participated in this expedition comprised field researchers Adam Davies and Andrew Sanderson, who have conducted worldwide research into unknown creatures for the last 14 years, most notably the Orang Pendek in Sumatra.
The team joined with Lori Simmons, whose father, the late Donnald Wallace researched Sasquatch in this area over a period of 28 years, an area she regularly continues to investigate.
The remainder of the field team comprised: Dave Archer, who has been on a number of field expeditions and saw the Orang Pendek in 2009 - one of only a handful of Westerners to have seen this creature in the last 50 years. Tim de Frel, on his second expedition with EE Ltd. Jackie Tonks and Simon Mellor are personal friends on their first expedition with EE Ltd.

Septic Tank Inspection 101 - It Passed!
One of the requirements by our mortgage lender was to have the septic tank inspected. The seller pays for this inspection. We had already paid for a home inspection, and only a few minor electrical problems were found and quickly repaired by the owner. Anyway, this is our first experience with an older septic system, specifically 40 years old. The process of inspection and the exact location of the septic tank covers and drain field was important to us for future maintenance and landscaping. Needless to say, we were elated that the septic system passed the test! Once we move in, we plan on replacing the buried tank covers with above grade risers for easier access.
