Jiji Wuchang Temple / 武昌宮 (Jiji Small Railway Line / 集集線)
The Wuchang Temple / 武昌宮 became famous after the 921 earthquake / 九二一大地震 or Jiji earthquake / 集集大地震 collapsed its lower floors, leaving the roof to stand in ruin. Constructed in 1923, the Wuchang Temple is for worshipping the Bei-Ji Shien-Tien Emperor and was a religious center for the local residents. In 1990, a faithful follower donated the land for the temple, and its expansion was completed in 1999. Yet, the temple collapsed during the 921 Earthquake.
Collapsed Wuchang Temple
If you have the chance to visit Jiji Township in Nantou, you might encounter this collapsed temple and don’t understand why it has not been cleaned up at all. Venerating the Supreme Emperor of the Dark Heaven, the incense-choked Wuchang Temple is almost a century old now and still serves as a center of faith among locals.
In 1999, a devastating earthquake struck the center of the island, and Jiji was the nearest town to the epicenter of the quake. Wuchang Temple sadly toppled over during the disaster. The Supreme Emperor of the Dark Heaven then appeared in someone's dream and made a request to be rescued. The worshippers eventually found his statue buried under the debris. They relocated him at the altar, while his beard started to grow! No one could explain this phenomenon, while myriads of believers continue to flood the temple only to witness the miracle.
After the earthquake, the temple management decided to keep the remainder of the building, leaving the upper half of the building and the ornate roof resting on the ground, and to build up a brand new temple right in front of the remainder. It’s an almost surreal sight, serving as a sobering reminder of the catastrophe. (rtaiwanr.com)

Jiji / 集集 is the second most significant stop on the Jiji Small Railway Line / 集集線, famous for its Japanese history and the the Wuchang Temple / 武昌宮 which collapsed during the 921 earthquake / 九二一大地震 or Jiji earthquake / 集集大地震. The epicenter of the major 1999 earthquake in Taiwan was located in and named after the township. In March 2012, Jiji was named one of the Top 10 Small Tourist Towns by the Tourism Bureau of Taiwan.
Jiji Station / 集集車站 collapsed in the 9-21 Earthquake (1999) but it was rebuilt using the same Cypress structure but also reinforced with steel. In order to preserve its authenticity as much as possible, its roof tiles were replaced with others retrieved from collapsed Japanese buildings in the area.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
The Jiji earthquake / Chi-Chi earthquake (Chinese: 集集大地震; pinyin: Jíjí dàdìzhèn), known locally as the 921 earthquake (九二一大地震; Jiǔ-èr-yī dàdìzhèn), was a 7.3 ML or 7.6–7.7 Mw earthquake which occurred in Jiji, Nantou County, Taiwan on Tuesday, 21 September 1999 at 01:47:12 local time. 2,415 people were killed, 11,305 injured, and NT$300 billion worth of damage was done. It was the second-deadliest quake in recorded history in Taiwan, after the 1935 Shinchiku-Taichū earthquake.
Rescue groups from around the world joined local relief workers and the ROC military in digging out survivors, clearing rubble, restoring essential services and distributing food and other aid to the more than 100,000 people made homeless by the quake. The disaster, dubbed the Quake of the Century by the local media, had a profound effect on the economy of the island and the consciousness of the people, and dissatisfaction with government's performance in reacting to it was said by some commentators to be a factor in the unseating of the ruling Kuomintang party in the 2000 presidential election.
Jiji Small Railway Line (Slideshow) / 集集線
The Jiji Line / Jiji Small Railway Line / 集集線 is a branch line of the Taiwan Railway Administration, located in Changhua and Nantou Counties in Taiwan with a length of 29.7 km. The line was originally built by Taipower to facilitate the construction of Mingtan Pumped Storage Hydro Power Plant in Sun Moon Lake. Afterwards, the colony government purchased the route in 1927. The line was severely damaged in the 1999 Jiji earthquake on 21 September 1999, but was repaired and resumed operations in February 2002.
On Jiji Line, there are twelve runs everyday, however, only one runs between Ershui Station and Checheng Station, and the others travel between Taichung Station and Checheng Station. The headway between each number of runs is about two hours. Due to the line being single tracked, only one train can travel the full length at a time. Historically, only the TRA's diesel-powered trains could operate on the line due to the width of the line's tunnels. Following the renovations from 2010 to 2011, the Jiji Line became navigable to other types of trains.
A one-way ticket fare, from Ershui to Checheng, is NT$44 by mileage for adults. And, an unlimited-rides pass fare is NT$80, for used in one day. The Jiji Line ticket and one-day round-trip pass is available for purchase at all the following stations: Zhunan, Miaoli, Fongyuan, Taichung, Changhua, Yuanlin, Tianzhong, Ershuei, Dajia, Shalu, Douliu, Dounan, and Chiayi.
Ximending District Tour (Taipei, Taiwan)
Ximending is a neighborhood and shopping district in the Wanhua District of Taipei, Taiwan. It was the first pedestrian zone in Taiwan.
Ximending has been called the Harajuku of Taipei and the Shibuya of Taipei. Ximending is the source of Taiwan's fashion, subculture, and Japanese culture. Ximending has a host of clubs and pubs in the surrounding area. This area is in the northeastern part of Wanhua District in Taipei and it is also the most important consumer district in the Western District of Taipei. The well-known Ximending Pedestrian Area was the first pedestrian area built in Taipei and is the largest in Taiwan.
The name of Ximending was derived from its position outside the west gate of Taipei City. In the beginning of Japanese rule, the area was still wilderness, through which there was a road connecting the west gate to the town of Bangka (now called Wanhua). Later, the Japanese decided to follow the example of Asakusa in Tokyo to set up an entertainment and business area. The earliest entertainment facilities constructed included the Taihokuza in 1897, Eiza (now called New Wanguo Market) in 1902, and the Red House Theater in 1908.
Ximending became a well-known theater street in Taipei in the 1930s and grew even more prosperous after the defeat of Japan. In the 1950s, every theater was full to capacity and scalpers ran wild. Gradually, more theaters opened one after another; At one point, Wuchang St Section 1 had over ten theaters. However, in the 1990s, as Taipei City developed toward the Eastern District and away from Ximending, it began to lose business. In 1999, the city government and local stores established Ximending as a pedestrian area, prohibiting the entrance of vehicles on weekends and national holidays, a move that attracted young consumers and brought back business. Today, Ximending has over twenty theaters and six thousand vendors, and is a popular area for small concerts, album launches, and street performances. It is also home to the Red Envelope Clubs set up in the 1960s.
Because of its history, Ximending is home to several historical sites. Built during Japanese rule, Ximending Mazu Temple is an important historical temple. Originally opened as a market, the Red House Theater is another prominent building from the Japanese era.
The namesake West Gate and the walls of Taipei were torn down in 1905. Chunghwa Market used to extend to this area, but was demolished in 1992.
