Inside China | Green Lake (Kunming) | Cui Hu Park - January 2020
Kunming, the modern capital city and transportation hub of China’s southern Yunnan province, has a large student population and a temperate year-round climate. Bridges and pavilions cross the islands of Cui Hu (Green Lake), a park designed in the 17th century. Nearby is Yuantong Si. A temple founded by Buddhists in the 8th century, it features a statue hall and a pond with an ornate stone bridge.
Green Lake Park, or Cui Hu Park (simplified Chinese: 翠湖公园; traditional Chinese: 翠湖公園; pinyin: Cuìhú Gōngyuán), is an urban park in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China. It was established in the 20th century on the west side of the Wuhua Mountain and is sometimes described as a Jade in Kunming.
The park consists, in effect, of a group of 4 small sub-lakes linked by bridges in the traditional style. The lake was originally a water reservoir for the city.
Green Lake is ringed by a street, and along the edge of that are restaurants and tea houses (some with rooftop dining), shops, and hotels, including the upscale Green Lake Hotel and Grand Park Hotel (formerly the Harbour Plaza Hotel).
During the winter months, black-headed gulls from Siberia migrate to Green Lake and entertain the crowds of visitors as they circle around and snap up bread, usefully provided by a herd of local vendors, thrown up into the air by tourists. There are performances of pieces from Chinese operas and of folk music within and around the park.
Located in the park is the statue of one of Yunnan's most famous patriots - Nie Er, the composer of China's national anthem.
Green Lake Park was visited during The Amazing Race 18 when the park was featured as the Pit Stop of the 5th leg.
The park is just below the main gate to Yunnan University. The most famous building on the lake is Jiang Wu Tang, a tourist attraction.

From malnutrition College studen is merely 4'4'' and weighs only 21.5 kg (48 lbs)
Since Oct 30, 2019, People's Daily post a story about a college girl from SW China's Guizhou, Wu Huayan, weighing only 21.5 kg (48 lbs) from long-term malnutrition, we have received countless messages from people all over the world offering to help. As heartwarming as all the kindness, at the time we believed the sole efforts from Chinese netizens and the money raised by domestic charities will be enough for her treatment, it's shocking to find out that after she passed away on Jan.13, 90% of the donation raised by China Charities Aid Foundation for Children, which is about 27,000 USD, never wired to her hospital.
We have to apologize for being able to provide a channel for kind people outside of China to send in their charitable contributions directly to Wu Huayan. As philanthropy is still in an early stage in China, the scandals of mishandling the donations, nepotism, and corruption constantly put Chinese charities under the torch of public criticism.
Even more heart-wrenching, a Douyin (Tik Tok in China) account started crowdfunding in the name of Wu raising 450,000 yuan (around 66,000 USD), which the account claimed to have given to the families of Wu, yet the family never received. It all turns out to be a fraudulent tragedy consumption.
Had the money came in time for Wu Huayan, would she make it through? A netizen questions on Weibo. Did the hospital stop treatment for her once the money ran out?
Indeed, what role does the hospital play in this whole tragedy? It isn't news that a lot of poor-regulated hospitals run on the Pay upfront or No treatment policy. Frequent scandals of doctors extorting extra fees from people in their care deteriorate the doctor-patient relationship, which is the main reason for frequent violence against medical staff in China.
It's mindboggling! said a graduate from China University of Political Science and Law. Girls like her are not getting help from the 'system' (stipend exclusively for students in extreme poverty) and my college roommate also from Guizhou, who in 2012 was using iPad, iPhone and iMac, was getting the money she definitely didn't need.
The frustrating reality is that there are people taking advantage of the system and blocking resources from people actually in need.
In the hospital bed, wearing a fuzzy blue PJ with white daisies on it, Wu Huayan wrote a poem.
Finally, I will return to plateau, planting a dark blue ocean on the highest ridge in Guizhou; there will be a boat that will take me far away...
Dream away, young girl. We are so sorry in this life, people failed you. May you rest in peace.

Wild Figs of Sarawak-Borneo
I love figs. I eat imported dried figs as a snack but I have never seen nor eaten a fresh fruit. It came as a complete surprise to find figs at the jungle produce market. I know Sarawak has figs and it is found deep and high up on top of a towering fig tree in the forest. Figs are a favorite food of the hornbills, wild pigeons, the orangutans, macaques, gibbons, fruit bats, squirrels, deer and bearded pigs. So, it came as a surprise to find figs harvested from the jungle of Bau district, a former goldmining town. According to stallholders, it is found near a stream, possibly dispersed by wild animals.
The figs in this video are not ripe. It is not sweet. Figs, according to stallholder Christine, will only be sweet if we allow it to ripen on the tree. The colour of the figs will turn pink and then red. Unripe green figs are eaten by the indigenous people with belacan or prawn paste, dried anchovies and chili padi. We call this type of eating 'ulam'.
Figs are not seasonal. It is evergreen. It is plucked from the branches, the trunk and near the base of the tree. Figs are collected from gigantic trees, shrubs, epiphytes, creepers and stranglers. In Sarawak, we call the fig fruit 'Ara'.
The indigenous people of Sarawak believe the wild fig tree is inhabited by spirits. Thus the name 'Kayu Kara'. When I mentioned 'ara', they say 'oh, the 'Kayu Ara'.
According to a mathematics teacher turned stallholder, the name 'Ara' means 'demon' or evil spirit. He said the birds ate the figs and dispersed it on the branches. There, the seeds germinate and derive its nutrients from the host tree, and fighting for space and the sunlight. Eventually the host tree dies. The fig tree roots will descend to the ground for nutrients and support. If it does not do that, it will fall to the ground with the dead host. Then it will tower high up among the other trees in the forest and spread out. This fig tree is called the strangler. Its fruits are smaller than the ones featured in this video and it is eaten by the birds and other mammals.
Not all figs found in the forests are eaten by the local people. The ficus roxburghii of the rosaceae family is listed by FDA as one of the poisonous plants in the world. No one has disclaimed it. This species is grown as a shade tree and decorative plant in university campuses. It is hardly eaten. Others in the list are Ficus altissima Blume, Ficus anthelmintica Martius, Ficus Atrox C. Martius & Miq, Ficus auriculata Lour, Ficus Carica L, Ficus hispida L, Ficus hypogaea pharm ex wehmer, Ficus leucantatoma poiret, Ficus Mutisii Dugand and Ficus Pumila L(all from the moraceae family).
In fact, fig is not a fruit. It is in fact a species of flowering plant in the genus Ficus from the moraceae family. It has a bulbous shape. Figs in Sarawak are found in the secondary forest and in all forest types.
Figs are found in the Himalayan mountains, China, Indo China, Thailand. In West Malaysia, it is found in Muar, Johor and Trengganu. It is planted as a ornamental plant to provide shade in university campuses. In Trengganu, it is used for cooking goat's meat. Figs range from red to grape colour. It is juicy when it is ripe.
Figs are a good source of calcium, fiber, copper, manganese, magnesium, potassium, vit K, vit B6, phosphorus, iron, vit A and C. It contains antioxidants, laxative substances and sugars. Fig is a good source of flavonoids, polyphenols and enzymes.
Fig is a deciduous tree. In China, it is known as 'Wu Hua Guo'. Sarawak has a record of 180 species of figs. Borneo alone has more than 260 varieties of figs. Dried figs is a good source of calcium, copper, potassium, manganese, iron, selenium and zinc
Fig is best eaten when it is ripe and fresh. Unripe fruit produces a white milky latex which can cause skin irritation or allergy. One stallholder who tasted the unripe fruit told me it is crunchy. The sap is also an eye irritant. I did not buy these figs. I am not put off by its eerie tale. I prefer ripe and unbruised fruit.

Dang (When) English translation
When the mountain has no edges and angles
When the river water does not flow
When time stops making no difference between day and night
When all things crumble to dust
I still cannot break up with you
Cannot break up with you
Your gentle warmth... is the greatest expectation in my life
When the sun does not rise
When the earth does not rotate
When there is no difference between the seasons
When all the flowers and trees withered
I still cannot split up with you
Cannot split with you
Your smile... is the greatest reminiscence in my life
Let the secularity go with us, have a stylish life
Ride horses and share the prosperous world
Sing with wine and express the joy in our hearts
Live vigorously and seize the youth... (2 times)
