(天元宮)Tianyuan Temple | Tamsui | Taipei Taiwan
#TaiwanAdventure #TaipeiTaiwan #CherryBlossom #OFW
Tianyuan Temple (無極天元宮) is located in Tamsui Dist. of New Taipei City. It is a Taoist temple (道教廟寺) that emphasizes wu wei (無為, literally meaning non-action, non-doing or non-forcing). Taoism is a very popular religion alongside Buddhism in Taiwan. Wuji Tianyuan Temple is not a very old temple. Its construction started in 1972, and the basic construction was completed in just 57 days in the same year. The most eye catching five-story Wuji Jen-Yuan Tiantan (無極真元天壇) completed in 1992 is a unique structure in a Taiwanese temple. The reason it is called tiantan (天壇) might be because its outline looks like the Temple of Heaven (天壇, Altar of Heaven) in Beijing.
Wuji Tianyuan Temple became a famous destination not because of the temple but for the cherry blossoms season in February and March. We went there more than 6 times during the cherry blossom season. It is almost impossible to find a parking nearby during the period even on weekdays. Once we were in the site, we saw the original Wuji Tianyuan Temple. The most incredible part was following the road up to the hill where the Wuji Jen-Yuan Tiantan stands on top of the hill. We saw almost every visitor taking photos everywhere which of course included me. You can use the Tiantan as a background of the cherry blossoms scene. Most of the time we went on the left side of the Tiantan and turned left to the trail that led us to a cherry tree garden. Here we saw lot of cherry trees, and it is a good place to take photo of cherry blossoms with the Tiantan as background. Then we took the circular path around the Tiantan and tried to go inside the Tiantan. It was unfortunately not open to public that day. We will try again next cherry blossom season. It is much less crowded in other seasons, and you can come here to enjoy the peaceful environment anytime if you live in Taiwan.
WUJI TIANYUAN TEMPLE - Cherry Blossoms???????????? 天元宮
There are a lot of places in Taiwan where you can witness the bloom of cherry blossoms. Some of these places are Wulai, Alishan, Yangmingshan, Tian Yuan Gong (Tamsui), and Taichung. The most accessible places from the center of Taipei is either Yangmingshan or Tian Yuan Gong in Tamsui. Personally, I prefer to go to Tamsui because there are still more to see in this place not just the cherry blossoms.
Tian Yuan Gong 天元宮 is one of the famous spots in the country to visit for the cherry blossom viewing. The Chinese word “Gong (宮)” in Tian Yuan Gong means “temple”, meaning this is a place of worship for the Taiwanese. Inside the 5-storey temple, you can see locals praying and offering gifts to their gods. But because of its amazing view from the top, locals and even foreign nationals usually get inside and enjoy the astounding sight.
How to get there:
From the Taipei Main Station, take on the Red MRT Line to Tamsui Station. This will take around 45-50 minutes for 50NTD.
Go out to Exit 2 and you will see sign boards about the cherry blossoms that will direct you to where the buses for Tian Yuan Gong are. (Don’t worry, you will not get lost here since the line going there is extremely long, so it’s quite obvious!). You can use your Easy Card in the bus or pay 15NTD. It is a 20-minute long trip.

Sakura or cherry blossom season is a huge draw in East Asia. Japan has the world's attention when it comes to sakura viewing. Even Korea has a popular cherry blossom season but few outside of the region are familiar with Taiwan's cherry blossom season. Although not anywhere near the same scale as Japan's giant Sakura Garden there are some beautiful spots that feature sakura against stunning nature backdrops and traditional temple complexes. One of the most popular places to see the cherry blossoms in Northern Taiwan, an earlier season than Japan's, is at Danshui District's Wuji Tianyuan Temple featuring the striking Temple of Heaven Pagoda. The pagoda is in the style of Beijing's Temple of Heaven. This is a Taoist temple complex with the main temple completed in 1972 and the 5 story pagoda finished in 1992.
During the Sakura season that begins in late January, shuttle buses head directly for the temple of the Tamshui MRT Station, at the very end of the red line. It's still a beautiful temple complex worthy of a visit anytime of year but sakura season offers the most convenient public transportation. During the off season buses stop aproximately 2 kilometers way, so you'll either have to walk or take a taxi from the Tamshui MRT station. Other sakura spots in Taiwan include Yamingshan National Park, and Wuling Farm, and Alishan National Park in central Taiwan. The following fact is a common sense of travellers all over the world: the price of no matter flight ticket and hotel to Japan will be a double during March and April annually, because of the nation-wide flowering season of cherry blossom - the national flower of Japan. Only few of travellers (especially rare among Asian) know the lower-priced Taiwan also has cherry blossom flowering from January to March, from plains to mountains and from urban to suburb. The hottest spots of admiring cherry blossom are undoubtedly Yangmingshan and Alishan. However, when in terms of the convenience and number of visitors, this Wuji Tianyuan Temple in Tamsui/Danshui shall come to light.
In this Taoism temple worshipping Yu Huang Dadi (玉皇大帝, Jade Emperor, one of the three greatest deities in Taoism), the most appealing structure within is the five-stories Tiantan (天壇, Altar of Heaven) at the middle. Yoshino cherry trees are planted all around the building. People would meet with a sea of pinky petal here in every year’s mid-March. With pleasure weather, you can easily take a nice and stunning picture, no matter when you are circling outside Tiantan, on second floor which is at the same height of branches, or on the top floor to have a overlook on the whole temple and sakura wood. Nevertheless, due to its extreme popularity, once the flowering news is released, the place would be soon packed with Taipei residents. Even in very morning of weekdays, you will need a bunch of luck to find a place for parking. In weekends’ daytime, public transportation to the place is full-loaded and you might take 20 minutes to squeeze through a 100-meter long pathway to Tiantan from the entrance. Currently, the place is still seldom known amongst foreigners, but the crowd attracted by annual cherry blooming already requires government to control the traffic by deploying vehicles and police forces.Among the crowds, girls in kimono accompanied by photographers take pictures here; sometimes newlyweds take the advantage of morning to take their pre-wedding photos; amateur photographers just cannot stop shooting; but the most common scene is madams in group using their newly-bought smartphones for a close shot in front of cherry blossoms. This view frankly reveals the love of Taiwanese towards sakura, and we believe such a passion would not fade away in decades.
Wuji Tianyuan Temple (天元宮) is one of the most popular and is in the closest proximity for residents of Taiwan’s capital city. When the cherry blossoms at the temple start to bloom, shuttle buses will surely be ready to transport thousands of people per day to the temple from Danshui’s MRT station making a visit to the temple an exercise in convenience and patience as well.
Best month to visit: End of February to March (Sakura/Cherry blossoms month)

Wuling Farm
If you’re headed to Taichung, don’t forget to check out the cherry blossoms in Wuling farm! Blooming from mid to late February, not many people know about these cherry blossoms so crowd avoiders can rejoice. Besides flowers, snap shots of cute birds within the farm, like the blue back tit. Else, stroll along a romantic pathway flanked with beautiful pink flowers and snuggle up to one another in the cold weather.
Yangmingshan National park
Situated along a mountainous terrain, the cherry blossoms of Yangmingshan National Park are not to be missed. With natural hot springs, sulfur lakes and Taiwan’s largest volcano, the Seven Star Mountain, Yangmingshan offers far more than an ordinary forest hike. From beautiful cherry blossoms in spring, maple leaves in autumn and hot sulfur springs in the winter, the place is a hotspot year round - and great if you want to get some shots for the ‘gram.
North sea Jishi Temple: Secret forest
Many couples get their wedding shots in Taiwan and the North Sea Jishi Temple happens to be a popular spot. Wuji Tianyuan Temple
The pagoda-style Wuji Tianyuan temple attracts many tourists all year round, but the busiest time at the temple would be in mid-February to early March when the cherry blossoms framing the temple make for an excellent shot. Tamsui New Taipe Taiwan
Tamsui Old Street is a wonderful contrast to the busy-ness of Taipei City. Just a few minutes walk from Tamsui MRT Station, the old street is easily accessible and impossible to miss. You'll surely find something worth tasting among the diverse snacks available here. An ice cream cone longer than your face will amaze adults and children alike. The tiny “Iron Eggs” with their rich, chewy flavor will be hard to stop once you started. Enjoying a cup of sour plum juice with the gentle riverside breeze is a great way to cool off on a summer afternoon. Or a bowl of fish ball soup with a famous 阿給 “ā gěi” (fried tofu filled with glass noodles) makes for a memorable local experience. Eaten to the sound of talented buskers, with the beautiful view of the setting sun before you, it is no surprise that people love this place!
Nevertheless, Tamsui is definitely more than just food. We recommend hopping on a rental bicycle and exploring the mangrove ecology on the riverside trail. Or taking a cruise from Tamsui to Bali across the river, where you can absorb the beautiful scenery of Guanyin Mountain. Many also like to bring a book and kick back at a café on the riverside for an idyllic respite. And if that is not enough for you, check out the nearby Wuji Tianyuan Temple (無極天元宮) for cherry blossoms in spring and Tough Guy Peak (觀音山硬漢嶺) for an amazing night view.

Hello Guys! My name is Yaung. I am from Cebu City, Philippines and is currently based in Bangkok, Thailand.
*******************************************************
Taipei Tianhou Temple:
One of Taipei's many temples dedicated to the Heavenly Queen (天后), this beautiful temple is located right in the core of Ximending Shopping District (西門町), hidden away behind all the glittering signs through its main entrance on Chengdu Road.
The temple has been in existence for the past 270 years as one of the 3 great temples of the Bangka (Wanhua) District, and was reconstructed after a fire, being completed in 1959 on Mazu's millennium anniversary.
This temple is dedicated to Mazu (媽祖), a deity worshipped by many of southern Chinese heritage and sea-faring people.
