Part of the area now known as the City of Melbourne and all of the City of Yarra (as well as land extending north into central Victoria) are the traditional lands of the Kulin nation. The City of Yarra area was looked after by the Wurundjeri-willam family group. They belong to the Wurundjeri-balluk clan, which is part of the larger Wurundjeri tribe. The Wurundjeri-willam mainly spoke Woi wurrung language, but also spoke other languages of their nation. Each clan was governed by a Ngurungaeta [pronounced na-run-getta] or head-man. Melbourne: Two Worlds is a mural exploring the stories and culture of the Wurundjeri community, depicting Aboriginal peoples' connection with their ancestral past within a contemporary Melbourne context.
The mural depicts Bunjil the Wedge-tailed Eagle, the creator spirit of all living things including the first people, the rivers, mountains and trees. Other stories depicted also offer insight into the lore that was held strictly by the elders on Country. Wurundjeri people evolved a way of life finely tuned to the local environment. Since much of Melbourne's flora needs fire to stimulate regrowth and germinate seeds, they worked with fire and not against it. Food gathering was also conducted under the lore of the elders. This was done in a suitable manner and was of paramount importance. Goannas, kangaroos, emus, possums and snakes were speared and eggs collected from waterbirds and emus.
The name Wurundjeri is constructed from 'Wurund' -- the white manna gum that feeds along the river flats; and 'Jeri' -- the grub, similar to the witchetty grub.
ARTIST INFORMATION
The Wurundjeri Tribe Land and Compensation Cultural Heritage Council was established in 1985 by descendants of the Wurundjeri people who are the traditional owners of Melbourne and the surrounding country. The Wurundjeri Council has a thriving art and craft program that involves large numbers of the Wurundjeri community. Art and craft workshops enable Wurundjeri members to share and learn about traditional cultural practices.
Wurundjeri community artists Judy Nicholson, James MacFayden, Ashley Firebrace-Kerr and Derek Smith collaborated on the mural Melbourne: Two Worlds.

Stories around the Fire features Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, musicians and community members talking about the historical significance of the meeting place at Atherton Gardens Housing Estate and Fitzroy more generally. The event was presented as part of the Gertrude Street Projection Festival 2011, with support from Yarra City Council, MAYSAR, Office of Housing (State Government of Victoria), The Gertrude Association and the Parkies community.

Next Wave acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands and waters the Festival takes place on and around, the Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung lands, two language groups that form part of the Eastern Kulin Nation of southcentral Victoria.
Through translations and a series of workshops in partnership with the Victorian Aboriginal Corporation for Languages, we aim to raise awareness of Victoria’s first languages, and specifically (in the words of Mandy Nicholson), “why they are no longer spoken every day, but also why they are not dead: they are sleeping. Through raising awareness, we are reawakening them. If something is dead, it can never return, but if it is asleep it can always be woken up.” We are thrilled and privileged to have received permission to include Woiwurrung and Boonwurrung language during Next Wave Festival 2016.
