Mount Wutai (UNESCO/NHK)
With its five flat peaks, Mount Wutai is a sacred Buddhist mountain. The cultural landscape is home to forty-one monasteries and includes the East Main Hall of Foguang Temple, the highest surviving timber building of the Tang dynasty, with life-size clay sculptures. It also features the Ming dynasty Shuxiang Temple with a huge complex of 500 statues representing Buddhist stories woven into three-dimensional pictures of mountains and water. Overall, the buildings on the site catalogue the way in which Buddhist architecture developed and influenced palace building in China for over a millennium. Mount Wutai, literally, 'the five terrace mountain', is the highest in Northern China and is remarkable for its morphology of precipitous slopes with five open treeless peaks. Temples have been built on this site from the 1st century AD to the early 20th century.

View of Taihuai in Wutai Shan from Dailuo Ding Temple
This is the view of the town of Taihuai from Dailuo Ding Temple. (other names are Daluo Ding or Qingfeng). The temple is on the east side of Taihuai. Dailuo Ding is the name of the peak the temple is constructed on.
The temple was named as the Foding Nunnery at the beginning. It was built in the years of Chenghua in the Ming Dynasty (1465-1487) and had been reconstructed in the years of Wanli in Ming Dynasty. It was renamed Dailuo Ding in the 51st year of Qianlong (1786).
It is said that Emperor Qianlong intended to prostrate himself before the statues of Wenshu (Manjushri) on the five peaks, but he was prevented by wind and rain several times. He told the monk Qingyuan; I want to prostrate before the statues of Wenshu on the five peaks next time when I come here in five years. Arrange it for me!. The monk got the idea in the fifth year to cast statues according to the images on the five peaks and put them in the hall, so the hall is called Wu Wenshu Dian Hall. The emperor prostrated before the images in the third lunar month of the 51st year of Qianlong (1786).
Making pilgrimage to the five peaks is called the Great Pilgrimage (and is done via bus in one day from Taihuai). Whereas making pilgrimage here is called the Minor Pilgrimage.
