Confucius Temple, Wuwei
The Confucius Temple is known also as the Wenmiao Temple in Chinese, and is situated in the southeast of Wuwei City. This ancient complex dates from the Ming Dynasty having been established in 1439 on instructions from the reigning emperor and with the strong backing of public subscription. The construction of the original temple took just two years but various extensions have been added over succeeding centuries.
Wenmiao Temple & Dayun Si - Wuwei
During my journey across the Silk route into China, we travelled to the ancient city of Wuwei, here we visited the Wenmaio Temple . Beautifully ornate and spread over a large area.
The ancient Bell tower Dayun Si built during the Ming dynasty, also in the city of Wuwei . Houses a Tang dynasty bronze bell, which I had the pleasure of striking!
The pictures speak better for themselves.

'The way' in Taoism: A Chinese or universal principle?
Dating back to 2,000 years ago, Taoism is one of the most well-known indigenous Chinese religions, and is based on traditional customs that emphasize harmony between humanity and nature. Literally meaning the way, Taoism explores the ultimate creative principle of the universe. What exactly is Tao? Why do so many westerners find Tao Te Ching fascinating? Is it a Chinese or universal principle?

The Eccentric Taoist Deity Zhang Guolao
He was a Taoist who lived during the Tang Dynasty. Zhang Guolao—also known as Elder Zhang Guo—is perhaps one of the most eccentric of the Taoist eight immortals.
Zhang is often portrayed as an old man with a long white beard, riding on his white donkey, seated facing backward. Some have stated that Zhang rode the donkey sitting backward because he discovered that going forward is moving backward.
Zhang noticed that human society had regressed from the divine principles of heaven and becoming more corrupt. Yet ordinary people saw this as progress. So he decided to sit backward on his donkey.
One story has it that Zhang could ride on his donkey for up to 1,000 miles a day. He could shrink his donkey paper-thin, fold, and tuck it away in a box. And when he needed the donkey, he spat on it, and the donkey would regain its normal size.
As the oldest of the eight immortals, it was believed that Zhang was born during the Yao era, making him more than 3,000 years old.
According to The book of Tang Dynasty, Zhang was a real person who lived in Zhongtiao Mountains in the south of China's Shanxi Province.
Several emperors tried to persuade Zhang to serve them and share his secrets of immortality. Emperor Tang Gaozhong invited Zhang repeatedly. Zhang declined each time.
Empress Wu Zetian also tried to invite Zhang. When her imperial messengers arrived at Zhang's home, they found his dead body decaying and covered with maggots. After the envoys left, Zhang got up and walked away.
Later the Tang Emperor Xuanzong asked Zhang to be his adviser. Again Zhang declined. The emperor then asked Zhang, You have already attained the Tao, but why do you look so old, with so little hair and few teeth?
Zhang replied: To get this old, I don't have any method to follow, so I have turned out to look like this. It's embarrassing. But if I pull out my few white hairs and break my teeth, can't I get new ones? He then pulled all his hair out and knocked out his teeth. But shortly afterwards, Zhang appeared completely transformed, with black hair and new white teeth. Everyone at the palace begged him to reveal his secret. But Zhang declined and disappeared again.
Another emperor implored Zhang to visit the palace, with the promise that Zhang would not be pressured into service. Zhang went to the palace, entertained the emperor with his supernatural abilities, and never revealed his secrets. The emperor then asked the court magician, who said, I dare not disclose Zhang's identity, for if I do, I will die. The magician continued: If anything happens to me, after I tell you who Zhang really is, you must take off your crown, your shoes, and ask for forgiveness. The emperor agreed and the magician dropped dead, as soon he said Zhang was a white bat spirit.
The emperor indeed removed his crown, took off his shoes, and knelt down to ask for forgiveness. Zhang appeared and said: This man knew the consequences, if he revealed the secrets of heaven. The emperor replied, It was my fault he died. Let me take the punishment. Seeing the integrity of the emperor, Zhang revived the magician.
After Zhang passed away, his disciples found his tomb empty when they opened it. Emperor Tang Xuanzong ordered a shrine built on Heng Chou Mountains to honor the Taoist immortal.
It's believed that Zhang wrote a treatise on astrology—a system of heavenly divination that's still used by Chinese today.
China and the revival of Taoism | VPRO Documentary
What is Taoism and why did it have a revival in China in the last 30 years? Is Taoism a religion how we know it and how are people in China living Taoism? And speaking of Taoism, what do people mean with the term Tao? Is Taoism and Tao a philosophy or how do we have to understand it as outsiders?
In the fourth episode, Ruben Terlou travels to the mountains and learns more about Taoism.
In the mountain area where the Tao originated are still monks who are looking for the truth and enlightenment. There is a part of China that is hard to understand for our Photographer. When people in China speak of immortality, harmony and the ultimate effortlessness. Some Chinese go into the mountains alone. Others train in kung fu temples for years or sit under a rock. If you study the Tao, your spirit will live forever, they say. But what do they found under a rock and what made them study the Tao?
Ruben Terlou travels to the area where the main Chinese religions originated, including Taoism. There he is trying to find out the value of Tao for young people and meets an old hermit who has been living in a cave for decades. Mao´s Cultural Revolution wiped nearly out all religion, that was 50 or 60 years ago. But over the last 30 years, Taoism has seen a remarkable revival. A fact, that can be seen on the mountain where Master Lao, a giant gold statue of a bearded man, has been placed. Laotze or Master Lao wrote the main book about the Tao, the book “the Tao Te Ching”.
Photographer Terlou tries to understand what Taoism is by doing it. In the Wudang mountains, where the cradle of Taoist martial arts lies, he visits a modern kung fu temple. Surprisingly the center is mainly focused on Western students. The kung fu master demonstrates an ancient Taoist kung fu style that students have to learn it by seeing it once.

Stories of Taoist Immortals: Lu Dongbin
During the Tang Dynasty on the fourteenth day of the fourth month in the fourteenth year of Zhen Yuan, an extraordinary fragrance, and heavenly music filled the air.
A solitary white crane descended from heavens and landed by a woman's bed, and a boy was born. This boy was Lu Dongbin, one of the eight Taoist immortals.
Lu Dongbin was intelligent and good at poetry. As the son of a government official, he had to follow his parents' wish.
So young Lu went to Chang'an for the imperial government examinations. While strolling along the streets of Chang'an, Lu noticed a Taoist writing a poem on the wall. He marveled at the poetic quality, the elegance of the stranger, and paid his respects.
The Taoist asked Lu Dongbin to write a poem himself.
Lu wrote:
I was born in a family of Confucian scholars in a period of peace.
I find the garments of a government official too heavy, and prefer peasant's clothes.
What is the meaning of pursuing, striving, for fame and wealth?
There is the heavenly sovereign in the palace of heaven to serve.
This Taoist was Zhongli Quan—one of three leaders of the eight immortals. Seeing Lu's wish to cultivate the Tao, Zhongli invited him to the mountains to cultivate the Tao with him.
But Lu turned him down. At the inn, while Zhongli was cooking yellow millet, Lu Dongbin fell asleep and had a dream.
In the dream, 18 years went by. Lu passed the imperial examination with the highest score, obtained a high government position, and then became the prime minister. He got married, had children and servants. But his life took a drastic change. He was betrayed and lost everything—including his family and property—and was left wandering in poverty and solitude. Regretting his life, Lu woke up.
The millet was still cooking. Zhongli smiled and chanted:
While the millet is still cooking in the pot, you have completed your life in a dream.
Lu Dongbin then abandoned his life as a Confucian scholar and agreed to follow Zhongli to embrace the secluded life of cultivation.
Lu had to endure ten tests before Zhongli took him as his disciple. Each of the tests involved loss of worldly, material, and personal gain, and letting go of ordinary human attachments to feelings. In one test, Lu protected his sheep and fearlessly confronted a hungry tiger. In another, he resisted the temptation as a young beauty tried to seduce him. In the last test, Lu was willing to die to repay a debt from his past life. With righteous thoughts, Lu Dongbin passed all the tests.
Zhongli then taught Lu the true and genuine secrets of the Tao. Later Zhongli completed his cultivation and left, riding on the clouds.
One story has it that Zhongli told Lu that if he kept practicing the Tao, he too would be able to fly to heaven. But Lu responded saying, he would like to save all the sentient beings on earth, before he flies to heaven.
Lu travelled south to the source of River Li and met Zhu Rong, the supreme Taoist of Dalong, who taught him the swordsmanship of Tiandun. He gave Lu Dongbin a sword, which he used to eliminate the demons.
Legend says that Lu Dongbin made appearances in the human world for over 400 years. He slayed demons with his sword, and helped others to learn the Tao. Lu often travelled between the mountainous and swampy areas in the provinces of Hunan and Hubei, near the source of the Yang Zi River and the Huai River.
Later Zhongli returned, saying Lu Dongbin's name has been added to the registry of immortals at the heavenly palace. Today, Lu is known as one of the eight famous Taoist immortals. His poems were collected in the Quan Tang Shi or the Complete Collection of Tang Dynasty Poetry.
TAOISM | The Philosophy Of Flow

Proponents of Taoism want to bring it into the 21st century---What is China?
Taoism is one of China's major indigenous religions, and throughout history has had a profound impact on Chinese culture. But today, in terms of the number of followers, it lags far behind other religions like Buddhism and Christianity. There are now calls to change that, by excavating the hidden treasures of Taoism and providing some spiritual guidance to ordinary people.
