Leshan, biggest Buddha of the world - China Travel Channel

The Giant Buddha of Leshan lies at the confluence of Min Jang, Dadu and Qingyi near the city of Leshan approx. 130 km south of Chengdu in the province of Sichuan. Among the sights of the 1,300 year-old city of Leshan are the Lingyun Temple and Wuyou Temple, but Leshan became famous for the 71 m high Buddha statue.
The sedentary Buddha of Leshan is carved out of a cliff face above the river, overlooking the Emei Shan, one of the four sacred Buddhistic mountains in China. It is the biggest Buddha statue in the world. Only the head of the Buddha statue is 15 meters high and 10 meters wide. The nose is 5.6 m long and the Chinese say that a group of card players will comfortably fit in the auricles of the 7 meter long ears.
The Buddha was set up during the Tang Dynasty. In the year 713, the Chinese monk Haitong started with the construction of the Buddha statue. After his death, his disciples completed the statue after 90 years, in 803.
Since 1982, the Giant Buddha of Leshan is on the list of Major National Historical and Cultural Sites in China. In 1996, the Buddha together with the 37 km remote Mount Emei Scenic Area, was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Der sitzende Buddha von Leshan wurde aus der Felswand oberhalb des Flusses gehauen und blickt auf den Emei Shan, einem der vier heiligen buddhistischen Berge Chinas. Es ist die größte Buddha-Statue der Welt. Allein der Kopf der Buddhastatue ist 15 m hoch und 10 m breit. Die Nase ist 5,6 m lang und die Chinesen sagen, dass in den Ohrmuscheln der 7 m langen Ohren eine Gruppe von Kartenspielern bequem Platz findet.
Die Buddhastatue wurde während der Tang Dynastie errichtet. Im Jahre 713 begann der chinesische Mönch Haitong mit dem Bau der Buddhastatue. Nach seinem Tod vollendeten seine Schüler die Statue, die im Jahre 803 vollendet war.
Der große Buddha von Leshan ist seit 1982 auf der Liste der Denkmäler der Volksrepublik China. 1996 wurde er zusammen mit dem 37 km entfernten Emei Shan, in der Liste der UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe aufgenommen.

Leshan Dafo (Giant Buddha) is the tallest in the world and it's as gorgeous and magnificent as you imagine. The long queue to descend from its head to its feet on the verg of the river is not as much nice but it is definitely worth! Once you reach the feet of the Buddha the visit continues on a scenographic path along the cliff that at some point jumps in the forest of the Giant Buddha Park which is as huge as the Dafo itself. Here you can visit ancient tombs and Wuyou Temple on the top of the island nearby. The walk is quite hard expecially in summer but once again it's worth the effort for the beautiful landscape from the top of the island and for the ispiring solitude after the exhausting crowd. We were lucky enough to attend at the evening prayer of Wuyou monks and during our descent we also saw some people and monks extinguishing a fire in a small pagoda. They were so fast and meticulous attending their chore that no one got demage and they even found time to take pictures ^_^
