County in East China Develops Tourism Thanks to Rape Flower
Tourism is booming during rape flower season in Wuyuan County of east China's Jiangxi Province.
Reputed to be the most idyllic countryside in China, Wuyuan attracts millions of tourists from home and abroad every year, especially during the blooming season for rape flowers. The flowers were once solely used to make cooking oil, but have now become a cash cow for the tourist industry in the ancient town.
In early Spring, brilliant fields of flourishing rape flowers decorate the rolling countryside, dotted with clusters of charming Hui-style dwellings. From a bird's-eye view, the golden sea of flowers appears endless.
I feel like returning to mother nature. I'm in a very good mood, said a tourist.
Wuyuan county government has allocated 1.2 million yuan to encourage local residents to plant rape flowers.
In the past, the rape flowers in our county were used to make oil but now it has become our cash cow in their boom season thanks to the development of rural tourism. Take Yaowan scenic area for example, rape flowers per mu (0.67 square kilometers) have gained a revenue three times more than their previous traditional income. The number of tourists during the boom season is 60 percent of the annual total, said Cheng Hanlong, director of Yaowan scenic area.
Last year's boom season registered a number of more than 6.8 million visitors and a tourist income of some 350 million yuan. More than 80,000 residents in the county are directly or indirectly engaged in the tourist sector.
In addition, Wuyuan authorities have also come up with creative ideas to develop local tourism, including a flowers-appreciating train carrying passengers from Fuzhou in neighboring Fujian Province which arrived in the town for the first time on Saturday.
Wuyuan is also the birthplace of she inkstones dating back to the Song Dynasty as well as an area of rich green tea cultivation.
In the future, we will improve the industrial chain of the rape flower economy. For example, we will launch derivatives of the flowers, like rapeseed oil, eco-friendly plantations and other products, said Wang Hui, director of Wuyuan Tourist Economic Development Center.
The county will continue working hard to carry forward its precious culture and art into the future.

Tourists Enjoy Blooming Rapeseed Flowers in China
With large patches of yellow upon green, rapeseed flowers are messengers of spring in China.
In the past weekend, tourists have swarmed to southwest and east China to tinge themselves with these seasonal colors.
More than 170,000 flower lovers gathered at Chongqing's Tongnan district. There are some 2,000 hectares of rapeseed plants. These plants were in full bloom after a short spell of cold rainy weather.
Tourists enjoyed the spring scene and took photos of it in the sea of flowers.
Now spring is back and people have shed off their heavy clothes. They are here to get close to Mother Nature and to blooming rapeseed flowers. I'm more than happy here, said one tourist.
Tongnan has hosted China's most beautiful rapeseed flower festival for nine years on end. And this year's festival will not conclude until the end of March.
Thousands of kilometers to Tongnan's east, there is another place best known for its rapeseed flowers and rural architecture styles.
The high-speed railway system ran special chartered trains to Jiangxi's Wuyuan county. The service rightly facilitated flower lovers with their aspiration this season. Each weekend from now till mid-April, two special chartered trains will arrive from Nanchang and Fuzhou.
Local authorities doubled up the facilities. They arranged local volunteers to offer tourist tips to new arrivals at the railway station.
Shuttle buses of various carriage capacity would scatter tourists to scenic spots hidden in rural hills and valleys.
The high-speed trains have made it easy and convenient for us all. We can come and go anytime we want, one high-speed train passenger said.

A Panoramic View of Huangling Village
Famous for having the most beautiful countryside in China, Huangling village in China’s Jiangxi Province launched helicopter tours from March 11, 2016 offering visitors the opportunity of a bird’s eye view of the region’s beautiful spring rapeseed flower blossom.
Tours take off from Jiangwan Town airfield, about 28 kilometers from Huangling, fly by the village and over the magnificent flower terraces and Hui-style houses with their black roof tiles and white walls.
Surrounded by green mountains and steep cliffs, Huangling village was settled hundreds of years ago and is recognized as one of the most beautiful destinations in China. With its towering trees, stone paths, winding creeks and rich folk culture, the ancient village also retains the unique folk tradition of shaiqiu, or “crop drying in mid-air” as villagers sun-dry chili pepper and corn harvests around the houses throughout the year. This remarkable spectacle is a symbol of the Huangling culture.

［One leaf of Huizhou］Sixi is located in the town of Sikou Town, Wuyuan. The village was built in the 5th year of the Southern Song Dynasty (AD 1199). The village is backed by mountains and waters, embedded in the natural scenery of Jinfeng Xiuling and Qingxi Bihe, housing community and nature. The environment is ingeniously combined, the mountains and rivers are embellished with each other, and the picturesque and artistic conception is beautiful.
