Oregon Wine Country: Columbia Valley AVA
JBLM in 10 couldn't wait to bring you our next video on Oregon wine regions, so we headed down to the Columbia Valley AVA to check out the amazing wineries and tasting rooms before Summer fades into Fall. This is our second episode in a mini-series on Oregon's major wine regions.
Columbia Gorge AVA
Established in 2004
Includes areas in Washington State and Oregon with more than 20 wineries.
Area of Columbia Gorge AVA is 191,000 acres, approximately 300 square miles.
Approximately 500 planted acres of vinifera.
Located within a National Scenic Area, sixty miles east of Portland/Vancouver.
The Columbia Gorge wine region is defined by the Columbia River Gorge, a narrow passage that marks the dramatic transition from eastern desert to cool maritime climate as the Columbia River cuts through the Cascade Mountain Range on its way to the Pacific Ocean.
The region encompasses the corridor flanking the river in both Washington and Oregon and includes the Columbia Gorge and the southwestern part of the Columbia Valley American Viticultural Areas (AVAs).
Within the compact area of the Columbia Gorge lays an extraordinary combination of climate, soil and geology creating distinctly different micro-climates perfect for growing premium grapes of almost every variety from Albarino to Zinfandel.
Passing through the Columbia Gorge from west to east, the rainfall diminishes at almost an inch per mile while sunshine increases dramatically.
Western vineyards have a cool, marine influenced climate where it rains 40 inches a year -- ideal for cool-weather loving varietals like Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Riesling.
Eastern vineyards have a continental high desert climate with just 10 inches of annual rainfall but plentiful sunshine to ripen hot-weather Bordeaux, Rhone and Italian varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel and Barbera.
Soils vary just as dramatically as the rain and sunshine; from red from old volcanic mudstone to gray showing fragments of basalt rock.
Vineyard altitudes vary from near sea level to close to 2000'.
Grant's Getaways: Towns to Trails in the Gorge
As spring reaches full bloom, Oregonians are eager to hit a hiking trail. Fortunately in the Columbia River Gorge there's a new way to discover the nooks and crannies of the region, one that encourages visitors to try local flavors too. The Mosier Plateau Trail is the first completed trail segment of Towns to Trails, an ambitious project by the Friends of the Columbia Gorge – and supported by the Travel Oregon Forever Fund – that aims to connect the region's towns, businesses and wild areas through a 200-mile trail system.
Historic Columbia River Highway and Waterfalls
The Historic Columbia River Highway was the first modern highway constructed in the Pacific Northwest and the first scenic highway in the United States.
The section we will travel still remains pretty much true to Engineer Samuel Lancaster and and Sam Hill's vision.. The highway opened in 1916 and eventually wound its' way from Portland to the Dalles, almost 90 miles east of Portland.
Interstate 84 out of Portland parallels the original highway. We go past the Multnomah Falls viewing area and get off of Interstate 84 at exit 35 and head back west towards Portland for about a 17 mile drive on the Historic Columbia River Highway.
Since its opening the Historic Columbia River Highway has been a favored destination for travelers earning it the coveted title by many as the King of Highways.
With its gorgeous scenery including cascading waterfalls and deep gorges, this historic highway offers up what the original designers called beauty spots.
Horsetail Falls is our first. Now for the grand daddy of the falls along the Historic Highway, Multnomah Falls. Millions of visitors each year are inspired by these falls. This water fall is the second-tallest year-round waterfall in the nation. The water drops 620 feet.
The winding road of the scenic highway will deliver us next to Wahkeena Falls. Like most of the falls along the Historic Columbia River Highway, trails take you through some gorgeous and majestic scenery. The Vista House was built in 1916 at the same time as Highway 30. The building was designed to be a place of refreshment and enjoyment of the Columbia Gorge.
The octagonal building with its copper dome houses a museum, gift shop and interpretive display of historic and geologic points of interest in the Gorge and a awe inspiring view of the Columbia River 733 feet below.
.At one time the highway was home to many roadhouses where travelers could get a good meal and rest. A mile past vista House, At the Portland Women's Forum State Park at
Chanticleer Point this is the former site of the Chanticleer Inn, where the highway's masterminds met in 1913 to plan construction. Scott Walter gets his camera out and visits the Historic Columbia Highway and its' waterfalls.

BANDIT:
Bandit is a 18 month old rescue dog saved from a kill shelter in California. He was horribly matted, dirty and looked like a Terrier/Shih Tzu mix. After he was groomed it became clear he is a purebred Parti Poodle. A fairly unusual dog, a Parti Poodle has a unique coloration only possible when both parents are purebred Parti Poodles. The gene necessary to produce the coloration is recessive and both parents must have it. I would have loved him either way but am blessed to have him as he is. =8v)

Oregon Coast Highway - Lincoln to Brookings
The Oregon Coast Highway, 363 miles where you can relax, enjoy, & escape amidst natural beauty & wildlife. Thoughts fade away along this Wind swept shoreline, home to soaring sand dunes, pristine beaches, and bustling harbors.
I would rate this part of Route 101, as one of most scenic drives in the US, even above Californias Highway one or Pacific Coast Highway. Unlike other coastlines in the US, the Oregon coastline completely open to the public.
Whether you want to just enjoy the drive, or stop and watch for wales and seals, make footprints in the sand, or catch crabs & Clams, the Oregon Coast has something for you. The Coast is generally divided into the North Coast which runs from The Columbia River to about Lincoln City. The Central which runs from Lincoln City to Reedsport, and the South Coast which runs from Reedsport to the CA border.
It generally takes about 10-12 hours to drive the full course of this highway from the Washington Border to California Border. so We are going to cover the Central & South Coast as but I encourage you to also do the north region, with Astoria & Canon Beach. As you go further to the south you'll find less crowds, and a more rugged coastline, secluded beaches. for more info see or .

Interstate 5 Southbound thru Oregon: Turner, Albany, Eugene
This video begins near Turner, Oregon (just south of Salem, near the Enchanted Forest) and heads south on Interstate 5 through Albany and Eugene, until it gets too dark to see anything. You may notice the truck stop at Rice Hill near the end, but it's too dark to see much. But, along the way, it's beautiful!

Free Camping in Washington Along The Columbia River (Boondocking)
I went out exploring the dams and sights along the Columbia River between Oregon and Washington and found some of the best free camping in Washington.
The scenery was spectacular along Washington Highway 14 (also known as the Lewis and Clark Highway). I hiked up the trail at Beacon Rock State Park to get a panoramic view of the entire valley and spotted the Bonneville Dam in the distance.
The best part of my visit to the Bonneville Dam was checking out the fish ladders and watching salmon swim through. I also visited Hood River, The Dalles Dam, John Day Dam, and Washington's version of Stonehenge, before scouting out some future boondocking spots near the John Day Dam. Melissa and I will definitely be returning there to do more exploring and camping along the river.
