We celebrated a Canadian tradition in a distinctively Canadian landscape at Midland, Ontario's Wye Marsh. The annual Wye Marsh Sweetwater Harvest Family is a wonderful Canadian Maple Syrup Festival.
We enjoyed maple syrup over an open fire while experiencing culture and heritage.
Wye Marsh is a unique gem located in Midland, Ontario. Today, we did a sugar shack tour, had a pancake breakfast, ate maple syrup taffy, cooked bannock bread and visited the birds of prey.

Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre
The Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre is located on 3,000 acres of wetlands, fen and forest in Midland, Ontario (Near Georgian Bay). The Centre includes an amphibian and reptile display hall, hiking, biking and skiing trails, canoeing and kayaking routes, an observation tower and boardwalks, birds of prey display, education classroom, event facilities, gift shop and Naturalists on staff.
We are a non-profit organization whose mission is to spark a commitment to conserving wetlands, woodlands and wildlife by creating exciting learning opportunities in a natural setting.
We also offer families and individuals, community groups and teachers and students environmentally based educational presentations & tours through the Wye Marsh

Our Canada Trip - last part - Wye Marsh
Last full day of our trip to Canada in June 2008. Excellent sunny day at the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre in Midland, Ontario. Couldn't imagine a more 'relaxing' day to end our tour before going back to Toronto for our flight back.

Join us as we visit the Wye Marsh in Midland, Ontario, Canada. We had an awesome nature hike. We found frogs, fed squirrels, and Luca held a Eurasian Tawny Owl and patted a Red Tailed Hawk. The Birds of Prey Program was awesome!

I was xc skiing through the bush and once I saw the ice conditions I skied back to my truck and grabbed my skates.I threw them in a knapsack and skied back. I went for a skate ,if only to say i've skated on the marsh!Actually it was great ! I skated all over.

Oh Canada Eh! Game, presented by Ontario Festivals Visited (ontariofestivalsvisited.ca). With Canada's Birthday coming up on July 1st, 2017, we wanted to help get the celebrations started by creating the Oh Canada Eh! Game. Each Monday, up to July 1st, 2017, we will post a You Tube video with an About Canada question. You can e-mail gary@ontariofestivalsvisited.ca for the correct answers. This week's video is about the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre. We were there to enjoy the annual Sweetwater Harvest Festival, a celebration of Canadian Maple Syrup.

Another one of my adventures during the summer of 2005. The video begins in the Wye Marsh tourist centre which also serves as a wildlife museum and a gift store. After paying for the canoe trip we watch an informative/promotional video about the area. Later we are joined by our tour-guide and a small bunch of strangers who, like us, are eager to experience the wet Canadian outback... Enjoy. Music's by Enya.

's Ochtends vertrekken we naar de ingang van het park voor een dagpas en advies over welke hike we het beste kunnen gaan doen, om de meeste dieren te kunnen zien. We lopen de hele dag te zoeken naar dieren, maar afgezien van wat squirrels, gray jays en otters komen we er geen tegen. Een moose zien zit er deze vakantie niet in, vrezen we. Als we een Canadees stel tegenkomen dat ons als Nederlanders herkent, horen we van hen dat je de meeste kans hebt een moose te zien langs de highway als het donker wordt. Dat proberen we dan ook nog, maar helaas tevergeefs.
Zaterdag 24 oktober
Als we naar Midland rijden komen we langs het Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre, waar we naast roofvogels, slangen, schildpadden, kikkers en padden ook de op een haar na uitgestorven trumpeter swans te zien krijgen. Op een zwarte snavel na, zien ze er precies zo uit als de ons zo bekende zwaan. De koolmezen in het park zijn niet bepaald als wildlife te bestempelen, want als je je hand opsteekt komen ze al op je vinger zitten. Als we verder rijden naar Midland komen we langs het Huronia Museum en het daarbij horende Huron-Ouendat Village, een nagebouwd dorp van rond 1500, 1600. Het dorp is afgesloten met een 21ste eeuws slot, waarvan we de sleutel krijgen, omdat we de enige bezoekers zijn. Bij een van de bouwwerken zegt Mo dat het een bowlingbaan is. Als ik uitgelachen ben, kijk ik in de meegekregen documentatie wat het wel is. 'Duck on a rock' staat erbij. Het blijkt de voorloper van het bowlen te zijn. Nadat we het dorp hebben bekeken, is het museum aan de beurt. Ook daar zijn we alleen, dus dat is lekker rustig. Onderweg naar het hotel komen we langs een restaurant dat King's Buffet heet. Mo ziet het niet zitten om daar te gaan eten, maar ik blijf zeuren tot ze uiteindelijk akkoord gaat. All you can eat buffets trekken altijd interessante mensen en ook in Midland is dat niet anders.
A Visit to the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre
In March, we visited the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre during the Sweetwater Festival (Maple Syrup Festival). This is a short clip showing the view of the Marsh from the observation tower. The birds you hear honking in the background are Trumpeter Swans. The ones you hear flying overhead near the end are Canada Geese.
