Wyland Whaling Wall 95 - Keys to the Seas, Key Largo, FL
Marine life artist Wyland painted his last Whaling Wall in the United States, #95, in Key Largo, Florida in February 2007. The mural showcases the living coral reef that parallels the Florida Keys depicting life-size manatees, manta rays, coral reefs, and other marine life. Located at Mile Marker 99.2 on Overseas Highway, this monumental mural marks the gateway to the Keys. ''It is a gift to the Florida Keys and all the people who live and visit here,'' said Wyland.
The show of the support from the community was astounding as school kids, visitors to the Keys, local businesses, and nearby neighbors came out each day to view the painting, volunteer their time, and lend support in any way possible. The mural was dedicated on February 12, 2007 by Olympic swimmer Gary Hall, and musicians Steve Turre and Arlo Guthrie.

Florida Keys Special 2019 | Art Loft 713 Full Episode
FLORIDA KEYS - Art Loft takes a dive into the Florida Keys - and this time, quite literally!
First up, photographer Stephen Frink is the conduit for those who can't travel underwater. But do the same rules of photography apply on the ocean floor?
Then we travel to Islamorada where a conceptual cartoonist evokes emotions we've always had, but may not have ever been able to articulate.
In Marathon, a water sports park has a message about the human impacts on the environment - and they are using street art to illustrate it.
As we move into the Lower Keys, a stained and fused glass artist in Stock Island is using an intricate hand painted technique that is not often used.
And finally, we hit Key West where we meet author and historian Arlo Haskell. Did you know cigar manufacturing was actually pioneered by the Jewish community in Key West and not the Cuban community? We discover this and more in his latest book.

WHALING WALL 95 - KEYS TO THE SEAS
Whaling Wall 95 is located on Mile Marker 99.2 on Overseas Highway in Key Largo, Florida and was dedicated on February 12th, 2007. Florida is the only state in the continental United States to have extensive shallow coral reef formations near its coasts. Whaling Wall 95 is meant to bring attention to those reefs and the marine animals that inhabit them by showing their amazing beauty. Working with good friend Dr. Guy Harvey, a world-renowned marine biologist, made for a perfect collaborative piece to illustrate the many fish and mammals on the Wall.
The building was formerly home to a fantastic coral reef and larger-than-life mermaid mural that was painted over by the owners due to it's poor condition. Like most of the South Florida residents, Wyland felt the absence of the mermaid mural and decided to paint the 360-degree continuous mural with a two-world's perspective (above and below sea level) titled Gateway to the Florida Keys.
Explore Key West
Located at the Southernmost point of the continental United States is the quaint, vibrant 'island city' of Key West, Florida. Lying about 90 miles north of Cuba, the lively destination is well known for its picturesque conch-style houses, landmarks like the Hemingway Home and Duval Street, and renowned sunsets at Mallory Square.
Key West is a remote destination to its own benefit; arriving to the island is easer than you might imagine. Some options include flying directly into Key West International Airport, taking a catamaran from Southwest Florida, or flying to Miami/Fort Lauderdale and embarking on one of the most scenic drives in America. The Overseas Highway is a 113-mile highway leapfrogging through the Florida Keys, taking you to the end of US Route 1, and exploring places like Islamorada and Seven Mile Bridge along the way.
Whether you're visiting for a week or weekend, there is something for everyone. From snorkeling at Fort Jefferson and the Dry Tortugas, touring art galleries like Wyland's, to strolling down Duval Street with a cocktail in hand or boarding a Ghosts & Gravestones night tour, it's hard to run out of things to do while on the tiny island. Getting around the island is simple: seeing the island by foot allows you to set your own pace, however, for those with a limited schedule may enjoy a trolley tour, renting bicycles, or catching a boat cruise.
If you're curious about six-toed cats and Ernest Hemingway's immaculate Key West home, be sure to tour the Hemingway Home on Whitehead Street across from the Key West lighthouse. For kids and tourists of all ages, the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory is home to 50+ different species of live butterflies, 2 chatty flamingos, dozens of birds, and an extraordinary gift shop. Take a leisurely stroll through the glass habitat, listen to the peaceful sounds of nature and waterfalls, and keep a sharp watch for developing caterpillars and some snacking butterflies.
Duval Street is lined with restaurants, famous bars, cafes, museums, shops, galleries, and more. Venturing off Duval Street you will find other bars and restaurants nestled into courtyards surrounded by banyan trees and tropical lighting. Grab a t-shirt from Sloppy Joe's bar, order a tropical cocktail from Conch Republic Seafood Company, dine al fresco at Grand Cafe, and catch a live band at Hog's Breath Saloon. The marina on the northern part of the island is home to hundreds of boats and yachts. Walk along the boardwalk with your cocktail in hand, have fresh seafood for lunch, and watch the fishermen feed the local tarpon. Look closely, sometimes a manatee and a shark like to join!
Key West is the place to be year-round. There is tons of history, character, entertainment, and secrets packed into a tiny island. Plan your next trip to Key West and discover all it has to offer.
