Maties triumph over Tuks in last match but Tuks still clinch Momentum Club Champs
Jean Bredenkamp hit an unbeaten century off 98 balls, spearheading Steinhoff Maties’ five-wicket coup over Assupol Tuks on the last day of the Momentum National Club Championships at TUT Oval on Thursday. The Pretoria side, led by Tony de Zorzi may have suffered their first loss in the week, but emerged the champions of the tournament in the end, still topping the log with 19 points in spite of today’s disappointment. Tuks were put in to bat first, posting 259/9 at the end of their allotted overs. The batting line-up saw several contributions that led to the daring total. Mitchell van Buuren (54* off 64), Ruben Hermann (54 off 83), Migail Pretorius (40 off 25) and skipper, de Zorzi (39 off 50) were all among the runs, while Brandon Glover excelled with the ball in hand, taking four wickets for 58 in his 10. Bredenkamp took control of the Maties reply after they lost openers, Isma-eel Gafieldien and Ricardo Vasconcelos for 16 and 10 respectively. His knock included six fours and one maximum, while he watched in frustration as Nathan Mngomezulu (12) and Gerhard Erasmus (2) were sent back to the hut. Gerhard Jansen van Vuuren chipped in with a 52-ball 31, but it was Neil Botha who helped the centurion give the innings impetus. He smashed 62 runs from 55 deliveries including four fours and a six, helping their side to a well-deserved victory. Tuks’ bowlers struggled to get breakthroughs, but Vincent Moore managed to return 2/34, his victims including the big wicket of Vasconcelos up front and Mngomezulu at the latter end of the innings. Ruan de Swardt, Thomas Kaber and Blake Schraader returned a scalp each, but it was not enough against the determined Stellenbosch side. Maties ended the tournament in third place.
In other matches, runners up Standard Bank North West University (Pukke) claimed a convincing, six-wicket win over Fort Hare University, while University of Free State ended their tournament on a high with a 24-run victory in their match against the Hollywoodbets Crusaders.
Tuks’ Heinrich Klaasen emerged the big winner of the tournament, taking home the Batsman of the Week and Player of the Week awards for his 289 runs and average of 72.2 at the closing function this evening. Nicholas Hewer (Crusaders) was named the Bowler of the Week after taking a total of 14 wickets and returning best bowling figures of 4/37.
