Sue Hodder - Wynns Coonawarra Estate - Coonawarra
Growing up in the red centre of Australia, Sue was destined for a life on the land. She loves the seasons and the soils of rural life. Today she’s one of Australia’s best-known winemakers, producing world-class wines at Wynns Coonawarra Estate. Quality and heritage are central to her winemaking philosophy, but it’s her forward-looking focus on sustainability and the evolution of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon that sets her apart.

Episode 36: '02 Wynn's Coonawarra Shiraz
Coonawawwa, blah blah blah blah . . . the Grapedonk searched in vain for a reason to buy this wine based on the label alone. With the cabbage patch in front, it doesn't look like a vineyard.
But, on tasting, Grapedonk exclaimed, Sue (the winemaker) has her shit together! It's not a flavor party like the Castle Rock Pinot, but with light grip and rich fruit, this wine kicks ass. For $5.99, this is a full court swoosh, over the shoulder, can't go wrong with that.
We paid $5.99 for this wine.
Dinner with Sue Hodder from Wynns Coonawarra Estate
Coonawarra's unique combination of terra rossa soil and cool southerly climate is optimal for growing intensely flavoured grapes, and Wynns Coonawara Estate is the regions's pre-eminent wine producer. Under the guidance of Sue Hodder (Senior Winemaker since 1998), Wynns wines are regarded as benchmarks for the district, lauded for their consistent quality and depth of flavour. First produced in 1954, and widely known as 'Black Label', Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon has established a reputation for displaying excellent varietal and regional characteristics. A wine of style and stature, and a perennial favourite in auction circles, the 'Black Label' is one of Australia's most collectable wines and Australia's benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon.
