A Dairy Interesting Idea - Schofields Public School Archibull Prize 2011
Schofield Public School won the Primary School Video Section of the 2011 Archibull Prize with this fantastic skit on the dairy industry
The Archibull Prize is an Art4Agriculture initiative delivered with the support of our funding partners Woolworths Ltd, Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation and Meat and Livestock Australia.
The program's multilayered activities use art and multimedia to engage students in suburban high schools to learn through hands on experience about the challenges of feeding, clothing and housing the world with a declining natural resource base.
How Does the Project Work?
The Archibull Prize is a free integrated program which will engage primary and secondary school students in agricultural and environmental awareness through art, design, creativity and teamwork by:
• Providing a blank, life-sized fibreglass cow for students to create an artwork on or to use as the subject of an artwork which focuses on the following theme:-
What does it take to feed Sydney for a day sustainably?
•Giving each school their own primary (food or fibre) industry to explore and showcase for example Dairy, Beef, Sheep, Cotton, and Grains.
•Supplying a resource kit with curricular connections.
•Supplying Matisse paints
•Pairing schools with Young Farming Champions who share their farming journey and work with the students throughout the duration of the project
•Connecting farmers, natural resource managers and industry experts involved in farming for the future (sustainable agriculture) projects, with students.

First, it was turned into a tunnelling construction site in 2013 before work started in 2015 to build a new metro railway station excavated 25 metres below.

Is new Wangaratta waste system trash?
News report for Deakin University.
Wangaratta has a new waste collection system and it’s affecting the whole community.
Residents have been given a compulsory ‘organics’ bin that will be picked up weekly while ‘recycling’ and now ‘general’ rubbish will only be picked up fortnightly.
Plenty of notice was given through handouts in the mail.
The reasoning behind the council’s decision is for a healthier environment, also citing that it will be easier on the rural city’s landfill.
Local teacher and environmentalist Ms. Lisa Gardner has been on board with the implementations.
LISA Grab 1: “The positives are that we are teaching our children to care more and be more responsible and think more about what they’re doing and what impact they’re having on the environment.”
Many have not taken so well to the new system - protesting that they do their own composting or that it’s impractical for their businesses.
Local sandwich shop owner Tony of The Lunchbox has been forced pay hefty amounts for more bins under the new system.
TONY Grab 1: “Well it’s a disgrace. It’s $300 for each. And I need 2 of those, at least. And that one and that one. So I’m paying all this extra money and I’m getting nothing out of it.”
The collection roster changing from a weekly service to fortnightly has also proved to be an issue.
TONY Grab 2: “Apart from that. That’s going to start smelling, in the hot weather when it’s left out in the sun… So I just don’t get it.”
It will be interesting to see the Wangaratta Council’s response to protests in the weeks to come.
