Visualising Taphonomy: reconstructing burial practices from 1m2 at the Xagħra Circle hypogeum
The dense deposits of largely disarticulated and commingled human bone from the Xagħra Circle hypogeum on Gozo, Malta provide a rich case study from which the process of death, and interactions with the dead, can be visualised. The hypogeum and nearby rock-cut tomb, both contained by a surrounding stone circle, held the remains of between 700-900 individuals, deposited from c. 4300-2300 cal BC. Preliminary analyses have shown that in most cases primary inhumation gave way to prolonged periods of engagement with the materials of the dead body, resulting in patterned deposits of rearranged skeletal remains. These episodes of activity are now being investigated through both taphonomic and spatial analyses. The excavation plans from the Circle have been digitised (by Dr. K. Boyle, Dr. R. McLaughlin, E. Parkinson and J. Thompson) in ArcGIS, providing means to study the spatial distribution of the remains, in relation to features such as skeletal element, age, sex, pathology, and taphonomy. This paper will investigate the alignment of ArcGIS with taphonomy, through a detailed examination of 1m2 of burial deposit on the edge of a single, large context (783). Within this 1m2 area, more than half of the 3,611 analysed fragments range in age from foetal to adolescent. The high percentage of nonadult remains allow us to theorise about the intersection of personhood with age and burial modes, through detailed visual and contextual analysis.

Megalithic Gozo 2
A visit to less well known megalithic temple sites in Gozo - Xaghra Stone Circle and Hypogeum, Santa Verna (Xaghra), Ta' Marziena (Tac-Cawla, Rabat) and Borg l-Imramma (Ta' Cenc/Sannat). Ggantija Megalithic Temples, also at Xaghra, are featured in a separate video.

Megalithic Malta 2
An updated tour of the unique and mysterious prehistoric megalithic temple sites of Malta and Gozo - the oldest man-made free-standing constructions on Earth. I felt compelled to re-make and enhance this video because Google Earth has improved the definition of the Maltese islands so much, especially in Gozo, allowing me to add a few more temple sites. This video now visits a total of eighteen sites, five in Gozo and thirteen in Malta: Ggantija, Xaghra Stone Circle, Santa Verna, Ta' Marziena, Borg l-Imramma, Bugibba, Tal-Qadi, Skorba, Ta' Hagrat, Qortin l-Imdawwar (Kuncizzjoni/Bahrija), Mnajdra, Hagar Qim, Kordin III, Hal-Saflieni Hypogeum, Tarxien, Xrobb l-Ghagin, Tas-Silg and Borg in-Nadur.
Audio content had to be replaced using Audioswap because of a copyright claim on 2112 extracts by Rush in the former soundtrack.

Ix-Xagħra is a village on the island of Gozo (Malta)
Probably the earliest inhabited part of Gozo, it is home to the Ġgantija megaliths, the Xagħra Stone Circle, as well as underground features Xerri's Grotto and Ninu's Cave. It is the second-largest village after Nadur in Gozo, with a population of ca. 5,100 people.
Xagħra Parish is dedicated to Our Lady of Victories, locally known as 'il-Bambina'. The liturgical feast is celebrated on the 8th day of September each year and is a crowd puller as it as the last feast in the summer festa season.

Xagħra Stone Circle.

It was said to be built by giants, with the legend of the Goddess Sansuna, who was said to have built the site, and nearby Sansuna dolmen. It is also connected to nearby (now destroyed) Xaghra Stone Circle and was the oldest free-standing temple on the planet until Gobekli Tepe was discovered. Using isotopes to study Neolithic Malta
As part of the European Research Council-funded FRAGSUS project, isotopic analyses of human remains from the Neolithic funerary complex at the Xagħra (Brochtorff) stone circle in Gozo, Malta are being carried out at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, University of Cambridge.
Here, Bernardette Mercieca Spiteri of the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, Malta and Dr Argyro Nafplioti of the McDonald Institute discuss the study.
