The fortifications of Xi'an, an ancient capital of China, represent one of the oldest and best preserved Chinese city walls. Construction of the first city wall of Chang'an began in 194 BCE and lasted for four years. That wall measured 25.7 kilometres (16.0 mi) in length, 12--16 metres (39--52 ft) in thickness at the base. The area within the wall was c. 36 square kilometres (14 sq mi). The existing wall was started by the Ming Dynasty in 1370. It encircles a much smaller city of 14 square kilometres (5.4 sq mi). The wall measures 13.7 kilometres (8.5 mi) in circumference, 12 metres (39 ft) in height, and 15--18 metres (49--59 ft) in thickness at the base

August 2011 西安の城壁南門での武術演技2(Xi'an castle wall performance)
西安（京都の姉妹都市）に2011年8月9日から11日まで行ってきました。
兵馬俑の壮観さ、西安城壁の荘厳さに感動しました。
遣隋使や遣唐使によって「長安」の美しさを知っていた当時の朝廷が「あんな街にしたい」と、
「平安京」を造ったそうです。
だからでしょうか、歴史の重さを感じるという意味で、
西安の町の空気と、私が住む京都の街の空気が同じ様に感じました。
午前１０時頃に南門に着いたところ、広場に、古代の兵士の姿をした人たちが並んでいました。
しばらくすると音楽が流れ始めて、数名の男女の太鼓の演奏がはじまり、
しばらくその太鼓の演奏と、兵士の行進と、剣を持った若者達の演技が行われました。
毎朝、そして東西南北の４つの門で演じているのでしょうか？また行く機会がもしあれば見てみたいです。
