Xiamei Village, China ξ阿妹
Xiamei, an historical and cultural village located at the foot of Wuyi Mountain Tourist Resort (commonly known as Mount Wuyi) in Fujian province, has a history of more than 3,000 years. This mysterious ancient village owns rich past and profound culture as well as remains secret and almost untouched by the modern world. The Ancient Tea Road extended from northern Fujian to Moscow finally reaching Europe.Today Xiamei Village is well known for its vernacular Ming and Qing Dwellings featuring exquisite brick, stone and wood carvings. A 900 meters long man made river winds cross the village from west to east, making a landscape of water and village in southern China.
Xia Mei Cun (Plum Village) began as an administrative district in 998AD during the Northern Song Dynasty. It developed into a tea marketing hub and the starting point of the Ancient tea route. During our visit we were also served tea on many occasions in the dwelling houses we walked through. The Ancestor Bridge, the Poo-Poo door, exquisite brick and stone carvings on doors, walls and ceilings and the Ancestral temple are some of the best preserved we have seen so far. We walked through the oldest lane in the village with its 200 year old history. The Dangxi River flows through the village and the Ancestor bridge was built over it. We spent a couple of hours here and enjoyed our visit to this historical village where life still goes on as it did all those centuries ago.
