UNESCO Training Center Conducted Field Investigation at Xiling Seal Art Society
Asia-Pacific International Training Center on Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO was invited to have a field investigation of Chinese Art of Seal Carving in the Xiling Seal Arts Society(西泠印社)on July 4th. The trainees treasured their stay at Xiling Seal Arts Society, an important part of Hangzhou West Lake Cultural Landscape and the Chinese Seal Museum, and then experienced the hand-made seal cutting by themselves. After that two sides exchanged experience on intangible heritage protection.

“The nicest place in the lakeside mountains,and the best seals in the world”.The Xiling Society of Seal Arts,with more than a century of history,is situated in the West Lake Scenic Area of Hangzhou at the foot of Mount Gu on the southern side.It was founded in the Emperor Guangxu period of the Qing Dyansty,and its ground contain large elegant gardens and scattered pavilions and pagodas.Its collection of seals and calligraphy and long history have made it foremost civilian group involved in the research of stone-carved seals in China.

Wu Changshuo (September 12, 1844 – November 29, 1927), born Wu Junqing, was a prominent painter, calligrapher and seal artist of the late Qing Period.
Wu was born into a scholarly family in Huzhou, Zhejiang. In his twenties, Wu moved to Jiangsu Province and settled down in Suzhou. Prior to the collapse of the Great Qing, he served as an imperial official in Liaoning.
Initially, he devoted himself to poetry and calligraphy with a strong interest in early scripts. He also led the Xiling Society of the Seal Art, an academic organisation for Hangzhou-based seal artists. Only later did he consider himself a painter associated with the "Shanghai School." As a painter, he was noted for helping to rejuvenate the art of painting flowers and birds. He considered carving seals and doing paintings to be integrated to each other.
His work garnered him fame and was highly regarded in Japan.
吳昌碩 原名俊，又名俊卿，因為避難石蒼塢遂號蒼石，或為昌石、昌碩、蒼碩、倉碩。二十二歲（一八六五）後與父親辛甲住在安城，開墾蕪園，因此前後共經歷近十年的躬耕生涯，其間不倦於金石篆刻，因號苦鐵、苦鐵道人，一八七二年始離開蕪園去江浙遊歷，以刻印謀生，因號五湖印丐。吳昌碩一生飽經時世，確有一種蒼涼壯碩之氣，深懷一種憂患意識，他與一般畫家不同，走的是文先於畫的文人畫一路，他獨闢蹊徑，將石鼓文、篆刻的筆、運刀、章法、體勢融入繪畫，形成富金石味的獨特畫風，又詩書畫印四位一體，極富文人畫意韻。其擅畫石和植物，植物中尤好梅花，畫梅風格多樣，筆墨方法各異其趣，不拘泥於形似，而是注重自我真實感受的宣洩，故他筆下的梅花其狀不一，秀麗如美人，孤冷如老衲，屈強如爭臣，離奇如俠，清逸如仙，寒瘦枯寂堅貞古傲如不求聞達之匹士。
吳昌碩（1844年9月12日－1927年11月29日），中國清末民初的篆刻家，亦工書法、繪畫。浙江省湖州安吉縣鄣吳村人。父親吳辛甲是清朝的舉人。母親姓萬。他的本名是｢吳俊｣或｢吳俊卿｣、昌碩是他的字號，他也使用過字號｢昌石｣、另有別號為｢缶盧｣、｢苦鐵｣、｢大龍｣等，晚年在70歲之後，稱自己為｢吳字｣。
1860年清朝發生太平天國之亂，當時吳昌碩17歲，在戰亂中家破人亡，僅有他與父親逃到了山中的石蒼塢，這也是後來他稱自己｢昌碩｣的由來，後來戰亂平息後，父子兩人定居於吳城蕪園。
在21歲時，也就是1865年（清同治四年）吳昌碩考取了秀才，之後開始以篆刻為生。
1872年，他前往江浙一帶，一邊遊歷一邊替人刻印謀生，31歲後，移居蘇州，閱歷大量金石碑文、璽印、字畫。後來於1904年在杭州孤山創辦了｢西泠印社｣，稱自己｢五湖印丐｣，他曾說自己30歲時學寫詩，50歲才學畫。
吳昌碩在32歲時，曾在江蘇省擔任安東縣的知縣，不過只做了一個月。
後定居上海，廣收博取詩書畫印並進，晚年風格突出。1915年起任海上題襟館金石書畫會會長。
吳昌碩作品特色是篆文的書法。他的篆刻從浙派入手，後專攻漢印。他將篆刻時的刀法融入了書法當中。在繪畫上面，他也慣用｢寫｣的風格來繪畫。
在清末民初的中國畫壇上，吳昌碩形成了｢吳昌碩流派｣。他晚年定居於上海，被後世歸於｢海上畫派｣，2005年他的作品《花卉十二條屏》，售價為美金200萬元，是近代最高價的海上畫派作品。
吳昌碩在日本也享有較高的藝術聲譽。日本篆刻家河井荃廬曾向吳昌碩請教，日本書畫界專門鑄造吳昌碩半身銅像，贈西泠印社陳列。在吳昌碩誕辰160年之際，東京銀座美術館舉辦吳昌碩書畫展，展出了收藏於日本的吳昌碩書畫作品。
著有《缶廬詩存》、《缶廬印存》、《吳昌碩畫集》等。
