Ximending Info:
The Harajuku of Taipei, this pedestrian shopping haven is one of the city's cultural centres, hosting a massive variety of fashion clothing shops, eclectic restaurants, clubs, and bars.
Located just west of Taipei Main Station in the historic Wanhua District, Ximending was founded during the Japanese colonisation era as a recreation district, and today has grown into a cultural icon with inspiration drawn from its Japanese roots.
One of the most popular destinations for tourists, the Ximending Pedestrian Area is the centre of the district, and accessible from Exit 6 of Ximen Station. The area is very popular with tourists and Taipei youth, and, along with shopping and restaurants, also hosts street performances and exhibitions.
The words Ximen (西門) stand for West gate, as the district is located by the historic western gate of the old Taipei City.
The historic Red House Theater is the main LGBT district in Taipei, with the outdoor area surrounding the theatre home to a large array of bars, shops, and meeting places. The area's bars have a reputation for serving excellent drinks and welcome all patrons.
Popular restaurants in the area include Modern Toilet and Ay Chung Rice Noodles (阿宗麵線).
There are many hair salons in this area offering the famous Taiwanese-style head wash and massage services.
The names Ximen and Ximending both refer to the same location, as the final 町 dīng is a Japanese character referring to the word district, while Ximen means west gate.
Taipei also has an east gate, Dongmen (東門), home to Yongkang Street (永康街) and an east district, Dong Qu (東區).
On older signage and materials, Ximending may be spelled as Hsimenting.

Ximending / 西門町 or Wanhua District / Bangka (萬華區 / 艋舺)
Ximending / 西門町is a neighborhood and shopping district in the Wanhua District of Taipei, Taiwan. It was the first pedestrian zone in Taiwan.
Ximending has been called the Harajuku of Taipei and the Shibuya of Taipei. Ximending is the source of Taiwan's fashion, subculture, and Japanese culture. Ximending has a host of clubs and pubs in the surrounding area. This area is in the northeastern part of Wanhua District in Taipei and it is also the most important consumer district in the Western District of Taipei. The well-known Ximending Pedestrian Area was the first pedestrian area built in Taipei and is the largest in Taiwan.
Ximending attracts an average of over 3 million shoppers per month. It has been called the Harajuku of Taipei. The local bookstores sell Japanese magazines, books, CD albums, and clothing, making it a haven for the Harizu, or Japanese culture adorers.[2] Individual vendors gather in the streets as well as the large business buildings, such as Wannien Department Store and Shizilin Square during the day, and Wanguo Department Store and Eslite 116 later at night.

Xinfu Market (01:00)
On Guangzhou Street’s south side across from Bopiliao is the old Xinfu Market building, fronted by scores of traditional-style market stalls in narrow, covered lanes. The building, opened in 1935, was Taipei’s first modern public market, housing stalls selling fresh fish/meats, fruits/vegetables, tobacco/alcohol items, Chinese cakes/pastries, etc.
Its heyday was in the 1950s, after Taipei’s population had exploded following the migration of the Nationalist government from mainland China in the late 1940s. Increased competition, notably from the dense grid of stalls that grew before it and later the then-novel supermarkets of the 1990s, led to its eventual abandonment. Now thoroughly renovated, it was reopened earlier this year, housing a history display, café, and other facilities.
The distinctive old building has a horseshoe shape and a narrow central courtyard that facilitates ventilation and light entry. The exterior is Art Deco, and the radial and stair patterns that were avant-garde when it opened have been retained.
Xibenyuan Temple Square (03:40)
Though in a busy area, close to MRT Ximen Station and 7~10 minutes away from the Bopiliao/Xinfu sites on foot, this heritage Pure Land Buddhist temple complex feels hidden away, partially blocked from view by high walls. Built up in the years after 1922, Xibenyuan Temple was Taiwan’s largest Japanese-style Buddhist temple during the Japanese period. A fire in 1975 destroyed the Grand Hall and other key structures, only the Rinbansyo (temple abbot’s residence) and Tree Heart Hall (lecture hall) escaping.
Long left abandoned, squatters were evicted from the site and renovation efforts were carried out through the 2000s to restore the former glory of the complex, giving birth to a new city landmark. The stately Bell Tower stands atop a hillock at the square’s entrance. The brick-built Tree Heart Hall, once used for Dharma teaching, is now a space for art exhibits and temple/area history displays.
Tip: Savor premium Taiwan teas in the elegant Eighty-Eightea teahouse in the renovated Rinbansyo, rich in Japanese aesthetics, the large central room’s tatami flooring creating a Kyoto tea-ceremony ambience.
