Steam in China 2007 Narrow Gauge Part 2 of 4 - Xingyang Brickworks Railway
This is an extended version of video uploaded ten years ago.
The line was operated by 762mm gauge C2 class 0-8-0 tender locomotives transporting clay excavated from a quarry to a brickworks about 5km away. The railway has an attractive viaduct over a large lake.

Steam in China 2000 - Jingpeng Pass
Ten years ago I uploaded to YouTube a few short videos shot in China in November 2000. I have re-edited the video and up loaded with longer sequences and material missing from previous uploads
The JiTong line in Inner Mongolia was opened in 1996 and discovered shortly after by the French photographer Julien Blanc. It was dieselised by 2005. The 943km, standard gauge line runs from Tongliao in the east to Jining in the west. About half way along it crosses the spectacular Jingpeng Pass with a ruling gradient of 1/80. It has seven tunnels, two large loops and several bridges and viaducts. From the hills above the town of Reshui it was possible to see the train for more than forty minutes as it passes the small town on three levels. Most trains over the pass had a double headed pair of QJ class 2-10-2 steam locomotives in charge, hauling a maximum of 2300 tonnes

China - Entering and leaving the Mine, Sandaoling December 2016
The last real steam action in the world is to be seen around the Chinese town of Sandaoling. Here the powerful JS Class 2-8-2s haul loaded coal trains up the steep incline out of the huge opencast mine. Empty trains reverse back into the mine. This final stronghold of steam power is almost certain to finish in 2017 - probably in the early part of the year.

Film by J. Martin Warr of two weeks in China on a Rail tour in 2005 organised by the Railway Touring Co.
This second film is the first of two films which visit the iconic Ji Tong line, home to the giant 'QJ' class 2-10-2 locomotives. Mongolia.

Xingyang brickworks railway in the rain! (Part 2) (HD)
In Xingyang (Near Zhengzhou) there was a narrow gauge railway transporting clay to a brickworks near the town. The line was only operating in dry weather, as the clay couldn't be treated properly in the rain... When I arrived there on the 21st of September in 2010, it had just started raining, while a loaded train was still on the way to the unloading point! In part 1 of this video we could see the train charging the grade from the bridge to the unloading point, but it stalled a bit further due to wheelslip on the wet rails... I immediately grabbed my equipment and went to the place where the train had stalled, only to see the loco leaving with half of the train! :-) The second half stayed on the spot, and five minutes later the engine came back to pick up the rest of the train... :-) It was amazing how fast and well orchestrated it all went! It's only a pity that all activity on this line has been stopped a few months ago, after a real estate agency from Shanghai bought the ground... :-( The new, cold China has also arrived in Xingyang... (September the 21st, 2010, Xingyang, Zhengzhou, Henan, China)
Chinese steam - C2 07 fly shunting train at Xingyang
C2 207 fly shunts her train of hoppers. It works like this. Step one, bring train into siding and offload cargo (previous video). Step 2. Reverse train out of siding and a good distance down line, keeping the siding switch open. Step 3. Move the train forward at speed. Step 4. Disconnect the whole train from the locomotive when the train reaches a good speed, and just as the locomotive speeds into the siding, throw the switch on the mainline so the rest of the train rolls down the mainline. Step 5. Reverse the train out of the siding. Step 6. Chase the train of hoppers downline, and then bring the whole lot back down to the quarry. 18-9-2006.
Chinese steam - C2 207 crosses the brick viaduct @ Xingyang
Xingyang has my favourite narrow gauge line in China. It is a very seasonal line and is now the only non-coal narrow gauge steam operation left in China - hauling clay from a quarry to the few brick factories along its 4km stretch of line. In this view, C2 207 crosses the famous arch brick viaduct heading for one of the factories, 18-9-2006

When I arrived there on the 21st of September in 2010, it had just started raining, while a loaded train was still on the way to the unloading point! The train has to climb a grade from the famous bridge in the middle of the line to the unloading point, so that's where I chose to position myself... :-) Soon enough, the train appeared! The driver made the loco work as hard as possible to tackle the grade, but due to the wet rails he still couldn't avoid stalling... (After the train passed me, you can hear the train stalling! So keep on listening!) Of course I quickly went to the place where the train had stalled, but that's for part 2... ;-) (September the 21st, 2010, Xingyang, Zhengzhou, Henan, China)

China's last steam train - BBC Travel Show
Shared usage tunnels - China.
Szechuan Province, China, is home to the narrow gauge Jiayang Coal Railway which serves a remote mining village high in the wooded hills and performs roles as both coal and general carrier. More recently, this wonderful little line has ventured into the realms of being a tourist attraction alongside it's day to day business, which may hopefully aid it's survival.
Close to the summit of the line, and not far from the terminus the line passes under a pair of rocky ridges by means of two tunnels. These bores are not only used by trains, but by the locals on foot and on their motorbikes, their only warning of a train's approach being the call of the tunnel keeper. Naturally we too had to sample the experience in this land as yet unburdened by 'Health and Safety' constraints.
Whilst electric traction predominates on the lower reaches and busier section of the line, all trains running beyond the first couple of miles are in the hands of these C2 0-8-0 steam locomotives.

China - Sandaoling, the Long Haul from the Mine (2). December 2018
The opencast coal mine at Sandaoling in China's Xinjiang Province is now the very last place on Earth where steam power can be seen working hard in a non-tourist, industrial situation. It marks the very end of over 200 years use of steam power in industry.
The long hard climb out of the mine area demonstrates the power of steam at its best. The JS Class 2-8-2 locomotives have to work at their very limit to maintain grip in the often icy conditions.
We see here three of these coal trains making the journey from the mine, uphill towards the unloading points.
Recorded in December 2018.
