Thrilling Hike in the Mountains of Sichuan // This is China
Jianmen Pass makes for an incredible weekend trip from Chengdu, especially for thrill seekers. It's possible to hike along a mountain cliff edge, harnessed to a wire or chain, with foot-paths as narrow as a couple feet. It's not for the feint of heart, but the views are some of the best in the province. This part of the hike cost 65 RMB, which includes the equipment (harness and helmet), some instructions, and they even took our blood pressure before deeming us worthy.
Jianmenguan is also the home to a giant military gate that has been called the world's most impregnable pass. It was originally built around the 4th century BC, during the Warring State Period. Thirty thousand soldiers from Shu (now Sichuan) were able to hold off 100,000 invaders from Shaanxi because of the strategic position of the gate. The gate that stands there now was built in 2009, but it's still an incredible sight, and it shows you how strategically placed it was.
The pass is also apart of the Shu Roads, a series of ancient roads that connected Chinese provinces.
ADMISSION:
Jianmen Pass Scenic Area is 100 RMB.
Additional costs include cable cars (50 RMB per trip), the slide way - a giant slide that goes part-way down the mountain (30 RMB), the cliff-side hike (65 RMB), a 4D Cinema (50 RMB), and various buses around the park (10-15 RMB).
HOURS:
open from 8AM-6PM.
HOW TO GET TO JIANMEN PASS:
China changes so fast that it's hard to give accurate information. At the time of posting this, there is only a slow train to Guangyuan, however in about a week they'll be opening the high speed train from Chengdu to Xi'an, which will stop at Jianmenguan. When that opens (around the end of 2017), it will be possible to get to the park in an hour or 2. But until then, the bus is the best way to get there.
From Chengdu's Zhaojuesi Bus Station (昭觉寺汽车客运站 - 166 Zhaoqing Cross Rd) take a bus to Guangyuan (buses run from 7:40 AM to 6 PM and take about 3.5-4 hours). Stay overnight in Guangyuan and then in the morning go to Guangyuan Nanhe Bus Station to catch one of the buses directly to Jianmen Pass Scenic Area (7:40 AM or 8:40 AM), or take a taxi there.

Chengdu Panda facility sitiuation, Panda park and research Center in China
Outrage is growing in China over a video that appears to show mistreatment of two giant panda babies at a famed research facility in Chengdu.
In the video, which has since gone viral, a staff member can be seen dragging and throwing the cubs.
The incident has drawn criticism from Chinese netizens, who have raised concerns about animal cruelty.
However, panda keeper Guo Jingpeng defended himself saying the cubs were being violent.
Mr Guo told state news agency Xinhua that what is not shown in the video is that he was bitten during a feeding.
The cub bit my hand really hard. Its teeth cut into my flesh and my hand started bleeding, he said, adding that his hand still remained scarred.
When it tried to bite me again, I pushed it away out of instinct.

他說:“我的手真的很厲害,手裡的牙齒切成肉體,我的手開始流血,”他補充說,他的手還是很傷痕累累。

Jinan City Builds China's Largest Government Office
This massive building can put many fancy hotels to shame. And it's become the new focus of anger against corruption and wasteful public spending in China.
The building, said to have cost around $640 million, is a government office building. It sits in the city of Jinan, in Shandong province.
[Zhang Qiang, Jinan Resident]:
The local government doesn't care about the people's money. They spend the money at their will. I don't trust them at all.
The building is hailed as the largest single building in Asia, and second in the world after the Pentagon. It takes up nearly 370,000 square meters, about 4 million square foot. That's nearly 70 football fields.
Pictures of the opulent office for Jinan's bureaucrats spread quickly online. Astonishment and anger followed.
[Sun Wenguang, Professor of Shandong University]:
Many government projects need funds, but the government doesn't give them money. Take Jinan City as an example. The traffic problems are very serious here, but traffic construction is very undeveloped. Also, many people don't have central heating. It's very cold in their houses in winter. Why doesn't the government invest in a project that people need?
Even state-run Xinhua News agency joined the chorus of criticism—though some of those messages appear to have been pulled. (
Jinan officials have defended their brand new office, claiming, quote, it didn't cost the government one cent. Apparently the project was funded by the different government agencies disposing of their real estate in the city.
The Jinan government building joins a series of luxury offices for communist officials around China. Like this one in Henan province. Or this court house in Jiangsu, modeled after the US Capital Building.

Dozens of people have been killed and hundreds injured in a powerful earthquake in rural areas of China's south-western province of Sichuan.
The 6.6-magnitude quake wrecked buildings, cut power and blocked roads in Lushan county, killing more than 100 and injuring hundreds, officials say.
Rescuers are struggling to get through to the worst-affected areas because of aftershocks and landslides.
Tens of thousands were killed in a quake that hit Sichuan in 2008.
The latest quake, initially reported as of 7.0 magnitude, struck at 08:02 local time (00:02 GMT).
Dobromir Zaprianov: It was the longest 15 seconds of my life
Its epicentre was in a rural area some 115km (70 miles) west of provincial capital Chengdu, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
State broadcaster CCTV showed images of injured people being taken to hospital in Lushan.
One injured man told the channel: We still live in our old house, the new one is not ready yet. Our house just collapsed. Everything collapsed.
The quake was measured at 12km below the surface, a shallow depth that usually indicates extensive damage.
Aerial shots of Lushan showed buildings collapsed or without roofs.
Power has been lost in the area, water supplies have been cut and telephone lines are also down. People in Chengdu felt the tremor and came running into the streets wrapped in blankets.
Chengdu resident Aaron Ozment told the BBC there was huge confusion in the city.
I threw on a some clothes quickly and made my way into the courtyard of my complex, he said.
Making calls was almost impossible; everybody was trying to contact everybody they knew.
Residents in the nearest city to the epicentre, Ya'an, felt jolts from the quake and aftershocks, but the city does not appear to have suffered major damage.
State news agency Xinhua said more than 6,000 soldiers had been despatched to help with rescue efforts.
Premier Li Keqiang is travelling to Sichuan to oversee the operation.
The current most urgent issue is grasping the first 24 hours since the quake's occurrence, the golden time for saving lives, Mr Li was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

An earthquake strikes Sichuan province leaving dozens of people dead and hundreds injured, Chinese media says
At least 56 people have died and over 600 injured after an earthquake struck China's southwestern province of Sichuan, Chinese media says.
The quake, measured at varying magnitudes between 6.6 and 7.0, hit at 8.02am local time close to the city of Ya'an in Lushan county and the epicentre had a depth of 8 miles (13km), Xinhua reported.
It set off landslides, destroyed buildings and has triggered a major rescue operation involving 2,000 troops.
The quake was felt strongly by residents in neighbouring provinces and in the provincial capital city of Chengdu, causing many to rush outside, according to accounts on China's Weibo microblogging service.
A resident in Chengdu said he was on the 13th floor of a building when he felt the quake. The building shook for about 20 seconds and he saw tiles fall from nearby buildings.
The quake struck close to where a massive tremor occured in 2008, killing 68,000 people.
Sky's Asia Correspondent Mark Stone said: The huge earthquake in 2008 was magnitude 7.9 and at a depth of 12 miles. This latest quake has smaller magnitude and depth, but it is still very much a concern for people in Sichuan.
Local seismologists registered the quake at magnitude 7.0 while the US Geological Survey (USGS) gave it as 6.6.
USGS said that significant casualties were likely and that extensive damage i
