Journey to Xinjiang-Turpan
Turpan City consists of Gaochang district, Shanshan county and Toksun County. It lies in the eastern section of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and south of the Tianshan Mountains. Turpan was a major crossroad for ancient Eurasia and an important city on the Silk Road. It is also the place where four ancient civilizations gathered and communicated with each other. Xinjiang: Exploring china’s new frontier ancient village tourism
For a long time, there have been many different views and voices expressed about China’s far western region, both near and far from the truth. We are trying to provide just one true picture of Xinjiang, and not THE true, definitive picture. We’ll take you to the heartland of this fascinating and vast region, with stories of ordinary people set against the backdrop of China’s overall development. The series is also about the challenges of change, and the price that has to be paid for the sake of modernization. In our first episode, our reporter Han Bin visits a village in northern Xinjiang’s Ili Prefecture. He found out how modernization has brought dramatic changes to this once isolated village, and resulted in new conflicts between different groups of people.

[ Feng Shui BaGua八卦The Eight Trigrams Town
In the city of Tekesi, located in Xinjiang, the Uyghur autonomous region in the Western part of China, there is a Eight Trigrams town 八卦城.
According to some scholars its construction started 800 years ago, when the famous Taoist monk Qiu Chuji met with Genghis Khan. It was renovated in 1939 and is promoted as the Biggest Eight Trigrams city in the world. It is completely built on the principles of I Ching and Feng Shui.
In the middle of the town is the Yin Yang park. There are 8 main streets, which divide the eight sides of the Bagua. Each street is 1.2 km long within the first ring road, there are 8 streets within the 2nd ring road - 16 streets within the 3rd ring road - 32 streets within the 4rd ring road - 64 streets. No traffic lights in this city. They say that there is no need for traffic lights...
According to one Chinese travel site, Tekesi Eight Trigram County is famous for its radial circle layout which looks like a labyrinth. It is the biggest and the most well preserved eight trigram county in the world. And also it is a place where the I-Ching culture is widely known. There is a strange thing in this county. That is no traffic lights can be seen here. No matter which direction you choose to head for. You can reach your destinations at last because the roads are closely linked to each other.

Looking China: Xibe ethnic group in Xinjiang
Looking China is a short film series made by a group of young film directors from over 20 countries. They traveled to various places across China, making films and exploring Chinese culture with the help of students from local universities.
This episode is about a little girl named He Junting and the culture of her Xibe ethnic group.
The Xibe people live in Qapqal Autonomous county, Xinjiang. They have their own language which, however, is vanishing day by day.
This short film displays the life of this little girl: her school, her home, her friends and her family, as well as the preservation of the Xibe language and Xibe culture in her routines. Junting really likes her culture: the Xibe dances, Xibe songs and Xibe language. In this film, she represents the survival of the Xibe language.
Watch this film by Pedro Nishiyama, a young director from University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, to learn more about this ethnic group's culture.
Looking China is a short film series offering a glimpse of China through the lens of 20 foreign filmmakers. We will be sharing their stories in the coming days and weeks.

Bagua City is famous for its layout which is designed according to “Ba Gua”(The Eight Trigrams)
From the above view, there is a Tai Chi sign in the center of the city.
It is said that there is no traffic light in this city, BUT we found one — A removable traffic light!
In winter, there is not so much going on in this city, and even the Ferris Wheel was closed when we arrived.
My advice is that you can visit here in Summer or Fall by Hot Air Balloon so as to enjoy the entire view, at the moment, the green farm is amazing!
The people in this city is so lovely! We met two kids who were so happy playing around!
Xinjiang is an amazing place which takes around 1/6 of the whole area of China territory!

Oh yeah!

Civilian border controls along the Chinese , Pakisan, Afghanistan and tajikistan in Xinjiang
Most villages which are located in harsh, inhospitable regions in China were relocated into more livable places nearby as China's nationwide poverty alleviation program, but this village deep in the Pamir mountains bordering 3 countries can not be relocated cause if they are gone, there will be no people living in this region and no one left to guard China's western borders.
Local Tajik villagers understand their postion and how important they have to stay, cause many of their parents and grandparents did a great job patrolling and guarding the Chinese western frontier (old footage shows how hard their patrol was in the video). Now this new generation accept staying there and carry on their forefathers unfinished mission.
The govenment knows their sacrifice, put them on the government pay list, now the villagers are better equipped, they get salary from the government each month and live in government provided houses equipped with all modern convenience, their children are taken care free in government built village kingdergartens.
In China ethnic Tajiks are being called the most patriotic people in China, they dedicate their life potrolling and guarding China's western borders.
Villagers in Xinjiang's Desert Town Reluctant to Move Despite Harsh Living Conditions
A state program to resettle residents from impoverished villages adjacent to northwest China’s Taklamakan Desert to nearby cities has become a hard choice for some of those who are reluctant in changing their habitual way of life.
45 year-old Zibidehan Subi is a Uygur housewife living in Darya Boyi, a lonely, sparsely populated oasis located deep in the Taklamakan Desert in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The village is home to 300 families, all are ethnic Uyghurs.
Subi has been living in a wooden house since she got married at 15. She says the biggest change in the village is the number of vehicles.
We enjoy living a nomadic life. But the children are elsewhere, so we need to go to see them. Otherwise, we don't have to leave the village, said Subi.
Ali Abdulla, her youngest son, goes to school in the Yutian county seat, some 250 kilometers away.
Gathering tree roots for cooking fuel is an traditional survival skill, as Darya Boyi is cut off from the outside world, and modern conveniences.
However, the old ways of living are changing among local youngsters. Ali says one question has always been in his mind, when can he leave the desert?
I want to take good care of my parents when I get a good job in the future,” said Ali Abdulla.
Villagers have survived in the Taklamakan for 400 years. However, the drying up of the Keriya River, and the encroaching sands have resulted in 50 families moving to the government-built resettlement houses on the outskirts of Yutian County.
Another 100 low-income families, including Zibidehan’s family, are expected to join them by 2018.
For her husband Abdulla Qasimu, living in a desert is neither bad nor good.
I have no skills other than herding. If I'm being relocated out of here, I can hardly make a living,” said Qasimu.
With inadequate water supplies, farming is not an option for Darya Boyi villagers. Many residents, especially the youngsters, say that relocation would be the easiest and quickest way to end their struggle in poverty.
Old villagers like Zibidehan say they want to stay in Darya Boyi and remain their habitual way of life.
We would love to live an easy life till we die. Conditions are harsh, but that’s the life of nomads. Allah made me a herdswoman; that’s my life. It just like the five fingers cannot be the same; life is what you make of it,” said Zibidehan. More on:
