西樵山佛山
Xiqiao Mountain National Forest Park - Foshan / 西樵山佛山
The mountain lies a bit outside of the city, but thankfully we had a car to get around. Nevertheless the traffic on the way to there was terrible!
The park is divided into ten major scenic areas including a 66m tall statue of the goddess Guanyin, Heaven lake, temples and different caves. In one cave (Stone Swallow Rock) we took a boat ride through the cave, we climbed up to the big Buddha and went to the lake as well. The whole are is pretty rambling (14 km²) so you might also buy an additional ticket for one of the electrical carts to go around (20 RMB). The entrance fee was 70 RMB, which is in my opinion too high!

Since Ming and Qing Dynasty, refined scholars have been going after it and visitors keeping coming one after another, making Xiqiao Mountain a tourism hit of south Guangdong. The natural landscape of Xiqiao is fantastic. All the 72 peaks are grotesque and all the 42 caves are quiet, not to mention the lakes, waterfalls, springs, mountain streams, rocks, cliffs, ponds and decks that intersperse among them. All of them are unprecedented masterpieces created by this extinct volcano which has been quiet for billions of years. Xiqiao Mountain has deep forest and thick moss that are luxuriantly green.
Pearl River Night Cruise brings the visitors to enjoy the sparkling lights on both banks of the Pearl River and the beauty of the river and sights such as the Canton Tower, White Goose Pool, Zhuhai Square, Aiqun Mansion, the Guangzhou Hotel and the European architecture of Shamian Island buildings. The site used to be the ancestral hall of the Huangs, which is near the former home of Huang Fei-hong (黄飛鴻). Huang Fei-hong (黄飛鴻) (1847-1924), is a master of martial arts and lion dance, excellent both in morals and skills and famous in overseas. The building has an area of 5.23 mu, with a construction area of 1006 m2. The construction of the academy was planned in 1996 and finished on August 15, 1998. A status of Huang Fei-hong (黄飛鴻) stands in the middle of the hall, with Baicao Tang and Bao Zhi Lin on the right and left side respectively. The right-hand side of interior yard is Guan Dexing Memorial Hall and the left-hand side has Exhibition Hall of Huang Fei-hong's History. I was feeling a little bit claustrophobic in the city and I had to get away and see someplace beautiful. So, I braved 5 buses and a long trip to make it to Xiqiao Mountain in Foshan. It’s a place that I have been to before and I remember it being magical. I went out to try to find that magic again.
The weather was off and on, but I made it to the Xiqiao Mountain Resort on the eastern side of the mountain; away from the noise and crowds of the city. It was completely worth it too. I love this hotel and this scenic spot.

In part two of the walkabout on Xiqiao Mountain, I hike up the hill a bit, and then cheat and get on the cable cars. I was the only customer for the cable cars this day; an odd feeling. I wasn’t sure if this was a good idea or not.
Once I got to the top I went up to the Big Buddha, I looked around and found a few tourists and worshipers. It had a much different feel than the first time I was. But, the crowds were thin and it was an amazing experience yet again. After getting to the top, you can look down on the town of Xiqiao to the North. The Buddha is so massive that in can be seen for miles around.
Headed back into town, I passed through the temple complex and the take car back to the town. Walking back to the hotel, I came across a street fair of some kind… always a lot of energy at those. And I finished the night with a beer on the balacany at the hotel and enjoyed the thunderstorm.

Xiqiao Mountain is one of my favorite parts of Southern China so far. It’s beautiful. I hated being in the city for a long time, so I was excited to get out and see some nature.
This is a 2 part walkabout. I started just a few blocks away in a park/temple complex and I was exploring.. trying to find a spring and a waterfall that feeds to the temple complex at the bottom of the canyon. Climbing and climbing, I eventually found a nice area to relax and enjoy the quiet. The parks here and the most beautiful I have ever seen.
