Trip to Xitou Natural Educational Area, Nantou, Taiwan
Sitou is located in the Phoenix hill of Lugu village, and is embraced by mountains from three sides. Its name is derived from the Chinese meaning: the origin of the river (Bei-Shi River). Sitou has plenty of rains, and is cool and moist all the year round. Therefore, it is one of the most famous resort spots in summer and the most romantic place for new couples to spend their honeymoons. Sitou is part of the experimental forest belonging to the National Taiwan University, and here grows cedars, Chamaecyparis obtuse, red spruces , Phyllostachys edulis, and many other different kinds of trees. Except for a small well-preserved natural broad-leaves forest, most parts of this area have been developed and cultivated purposely. Generally speaking, the feature of the forest here is beautiful and tidy. Here you can visit the unique pure Ginkgo forest, the rare plant of redwood, the divine tree 46 meter high and 16 meter broad and with an age approaching 3,000, Youth's Activity Center, birds observing footpath, hotels, restaurants, camping area and so on. The University Pond, one of the representative sightseeing spots in Sitou, with an area of 0.5 chings and a depth of 10 meters, has limpid water and is a good place for taking pictures. There are over 7,000 varies of birds available in Sitou, which makes this place a good one for birds observing. River Blacks, White-ears Thrush, Redhead Warblers, Shao-Yen Thrush are representatives of low and middle elevation in Taiwan. Buildings in Shi-To are made of wood and have a smell of natural harmony.
Ginkgo trees in Xitou Nature Education Area, Nantou County, start to turn brilliant yellow
It’s that time of the year when the ginkgo forest at Xitou Nature Education Area in Nantou County offers up a spectacular display of autumn color. The leaves on over 80 massive trees in the park are already starting to turn a thrilling shade of yellow. Travelers from Taiwan and beyond are flocking to the park to get a glimpse of the show. Xitou, which boasts the biggest ginkgo forest in Southeast Asia, is always a big draw for tourists, many of whom come to take pictures of the changing colors.As the only surviving member of a family of non-flowering plants dating back 270 million years, the ginkgo tree is one of the best known “living fossils” of the plant world. Now, the ginkgos in Xitou are starting to turn a brilliant yellow, thanks to the recent arrival of a cold front.Chung Li-chanXitou Forest Area DirectorThey started to turn color last week, due to a new weather front in Taiwan together with certain rainfall conditions. The ginkgo trees in the park are now in turn shedding their yellow leaves. But because of the rain, we’re expecting a shortened window for looking at the yellow leaves, which should all have fallen off by around the end of the month. Administrators of the forest maintained by National Taiwan University indicated that a sufficient amount of rainfall this year had ensured that visitors to Xitou would be able to behold the autumn color in its full splendor.

Enjoying Nature with my family in Xitou Nature Park
My boys love nature. They love hiking and other outdoor activities that's why they love it here. Xitou Forest Recreation Area is located at Lugu Township, Nantou County.
It's an experimental forest by National Taiwan University they named it Xitou Nature Education Park. My family loves all the famous attractions in this place including the giant tree, University Pool, Sky Corridor and Ginkgo Bridge.
This lovely park is a great place for friends and family bonding. Lovely nature, fresh air, peaceful place where you can relax and unwind.

Lugu is a beautiful township located in the southwest of Nantou County. Due to its diverse landforms and mild climate, Lugu has a relatively rich natural and tourism resources. Surrounded by breathtaking scenery and mountainous landscape, Lugu practically becomes one of the well-received tourist destinations. The township is also close to a considerable number of famous scenic spots, including Sitou Forest Amusement Park, Siaobantian, National Fonghuanggu Bird Park, NTU Tea Garden, Kilin Lake and more.
In addition to these unique elements, the Lugu Township Office has cultivated a large number of cherry tree varieties in recent years. During the flowering season of cherry trees, the entire hilltop is covered with pinkish-red cherry blossom and the air is filled with the nose-pleasing fragrance.
If travelers would like to appreciate the delicacy of cherry blossom, there are several ideal locations for viewing flower, such as Siaobantian Stone Horse Park, NTU Tea Garden, Siaobantian Community, Heya Village, etc.
In the meantime, Lugu is also famous for its diversity of agricultural products, including tea, coffee beans, bamboo shoots, tea plum, mountain celery, Zuoshui rice and so on. Among that, Dongdong Oolong Tea and winter bamboo shoots are two most characteristic locally sourced agricultural products.

Nantou’s Lugu Township proposes tourist tax of NT$10 per person
Every summer, tourists flock to Nantou’s Lugu Township, bringing noise, pollution and overcrowding. The township council has passed a bill to charge all visitors $10 NT each, to fund infrastructure and relieve the strain on the tourist sector. If this bill is approved by the Ministry of Finance, Lugu would become Taiwan’s first township to charge a tourist tax. Summer has come to Xitou, and with it hordes of tourists. Year after year, the influx of people and cars brings congestion and air pollution to Lugu Township. To fight the negative impact of tourism, the local township office wants to introduce a tourist tax.Hsu Miao-lingLugu Township OfficeThe tax revenue can be used for environmental upkeep or to improve the roads, transport and street lights.Back in May, the Lugu township council approved a plan put forward by the township office.
