Xochimilco - Fiesta Every Day on the Canals of Mexico City!
The town of Xochimilco, Mexico has been around for many centuries. Even before the Spanish arrived to Mexico. It is on a canal system with artificial islands that are navigated by gondola-like boats called trajineras. It is still much like it was hundreds of years ago with the canals and human-powered boats so it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and welcome for tourists. You will see mostly Mexicans enjoying their time here hanging out with friends but some foreigners as well. It's like having a party on a boat with lots of other boat parties going on around you. Only Mexico can do something like this.

Xochimilco - STREET FOOD TOUR and BOAT RIDE on Canals of Mexico City!

►Mexico City street food guide:
Xochimilco is one of the most interesting cultural areas to visit when you’re in Mexico City. It was formerly a series of pre-Hispanic villages along Lake Xochimilco. Eventually Mexico City expanded and grew all the way to Xochimilco, and now it’s one of the boroughs of the city.
What’s most remarkable about Xochimilco, and the reason most people go to visit is because of the extensive network of canals that form the framework of the area. Nowadays, you can rent the brightly colored boats and take a ride, eating and drinking along the way. I was there on a weekend evening, and it was a bit more rowdy and loud than I had wanted it to be, but it was still very fun. If you go during the daytime, you might have a more peaceful relaxing journey at Xochimilco.
Here’s what Lalo ( and I did on our short visit:
Mercado de Xochimilco - This is the main market of Xochimilco, and one of the best places to get started eating traditional Mexican food when you visit Xochimilco. At the entrance of the market you’ll find rows of vendors selling home-cooked foods. Don’t miss them, they are incredible delicious. Along with rare types of tlayudas, the highlight for me was the chicken tostada which blew me away.
Here’s the list of everything we ate, but really you can just walk around, see what looks good, and try it:
Tlacoyo - 12 MXN ($0.65) each
Tostada - 15 MXN ($0.81) each
Taco - 5 MXN ($0.27) each
Jamaica - 10 MXN ($0.54)
Carnitas - 20 MXN ($1.08) each
After eating, we walked over to the boat pier. And unfortunately we were running a little late on time and it was a race against time and daylight, but we made it to the pier. Lalo talked to the boat crews, and we finally arranged a boat. The cost was a little higher than what it would normally be for locals, but unfortunately, that’s what it came down to.
Boat hire - 850 MXN ($45.91)
Hope you enjoyed this tour of Xochimilco. The colorful boats are impressive to see, and it’s hard to believe you’re in Mexico City when you’re both at the relaxed Xochimilco Market, and gliding along the canals.
Thanks again to Lalo for coming along. Check out his channel here:

We arrive to Xochimilco, Mexico with high hopes and a small budget and we are not disappointed. We explored the canals on traditional wooden boats called 'trajineras' and really enjoyed the Mexican spirit on the river. Definitely one of our favourite things to do during our visit to Mexico City!

???????? Descubre XOCHIMILCO en Ciudad de México
¿VAS A VISITAR XOCHIMILCO?
The best plan for a Sunday in Mexico City is coming to Xochimilco. Here you will find colors, party, fun, food, beverages, happiness ... In fact, the real Mexico!
Xochimilco is a mandatory activity of everyone who visits Mexico City. The place is very rooted in popular culture and this site was the location of one of the largest settlements in the pre-Hispanic era, thanks to his mastery of agriculture through an unique system of cultivation;
the chinampas.
The chinampas are floating gardens built of mud and vegetation from the field that always stay moist, making them a very fertile land. Furthermore, for centuries the channels arrived to what is now downtown Mexico City, making this area one of the fundamental economic pillars of the whole country. For all its legacy, Xochimilco has been recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage in 1987. Today it is a very appreciated area by the inhabitants of Mexico City to relax on weekends, when they enjoy renting for hours these colorful boats called “trajineras”.

Floating Gardens of Xochimilco in Mexico City
We spent some time riding one of the colorful and fun boats at the popular Floating Gardens of Xochimilco in Mexico City. They have been dubbed The Venice of Mexico (and known as chinampas,) - it is easy to see why. The boats are brightly colored with all sorts of imaginative folk-art design. Our boat person was friendly Guillermo.
There is a small down-side (if you want to cal it that, though it didn't bother us at all) - on weekends this venue is crowded and as a result, it is one boat after another on this average sized canal. Eventually, this creates a grid-lock of traffic and the result sometimes can be similar to the experience you get with carnival bumper-car rides, with some jolting and bumping. Boats sometimes inter-connect and as a result, each boat person has to help out to dis-engage someone else's boat off their own.
Also, as passengers, we had to be aware that some the bows of some boats could poke through the seating area of another boat. As long as you are aware of this, all is o.k. and it doesn't distract from the fun. I only mention this because on some travel boards, some people do leave major criticism about this.
Again, on the weekends it seems the most congested and the boats are full of party people, with mariachi bands also playing away on other boats. It all adds up to the fun and festive spirit of the boat ride and we thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end. Not to be missed, but if you don't like crowds or congestion, then a week-day might be a better bet for you.
As is our custom, Ed did the camcorder filming and any narrations heard. I did all of the editing, along with captioned comments added, etc. and did the final upload to You Tube.

Xochimilco & Mexico City Nightlife
A day of fiesta at Xochimilco and then out on the town exploring Mexico City nightlife.
For Leila’s birthday we put together what could be contested as the perfect night out in Mexico city.
Our first stop was for a drink at Limantour which was recently rated in the top 20 bars in the ENTIRE WORLD.
Despite it’s reputation the drinks were very reasonably priced around $10 USD, and well mine came en fuego and that doesn’t even cost extra.
It was incredibly important we made a reservation as we sat on the patio and watched people get turned away the entire time we were there.
Next stop was to Gin Gin – a super hip bar with multiple locations around the city. Gin Gin is a great place to impress a date in a quiet corner or flirt with Mexico City elite which is why, in hindsight I see why you would need a reservation here too! I guess I’m just not used to making a reservation for a cocktail.
If you’re in CDMX to hit all the trendy spots you can’t miss Rosa Negra in Polanco for dinner - you saw this location our first Mexico City video of this series. Tonight we were focused on food more than ambiance and headed to cozy Fonda Fina with chef Juan Cabrera, one of the contestants on top chef Mexico.
Never in the states would you be enjoying top chef entrees for under $15.
With full bellies and the warm glow of tequila we headed back to our hotel for a very unexpected surprise.

XOCHIMILCO BOAT RIDE - MEXICO CITY | Eileen Aldis
Xochimilco is a UNCESCO World Heritage Site and a special part of Mexico City's pre-Hispanic past. It's a canal system that was used throughout the valley which includes 170 kilometres of canals! Today you can visit and ride on a gondola-like boat called a trajinera which will take you on a ride around. There are also special floating gardens and lots of other boats selling food, souvenirs, and shuttling around mariachi bands who will play for you. We took the public collectivo boat for only twenty pesos whereas a trajinera costs minimum 350 pesos. We thought this was a good hack! If you're planning to visit Xochimilco, make sure to watch this video for a tip about which launch point to go to as well! This was a fun place to spend the morning and I loved seeing all the brightly coloured boats.

XOCHIMILCO - Best HOMEMADE STREET FOOD and BOAT RIDE on Canals of Mexico City!
Xochimilco is one Mexico City's most interesting cultural areas to check out. Mexico City eventually expanded its growth to Xochimilco now making it one of the city's boroughs. What was crazy cool was having on our Floating garden stacked with 12 homemade varieties of Mezcal. We really brought 2019.

The famous painter Diego Rivera's most prized collections are housed in Xochimilco at the Dolores Olmedo Museum, which we were able to get up close and personal to the rare hairless Mexican dogs, Xoloitzcuintli or XOLO for short. They are also one of the most ancient dog breeds on earth.
SCARY OR BEAUTIFUL? ????
What Xochimilco is known for its many canals and the colorful boats ready to take you up and down the canal. It was like a PARTY ON WATER .... FULLY STOCKED with some of the BEST HOMEMADE FOOD and DRINKS.
Let's just say I think our floating garden was probably the best in the canal. CHEERS!! ????????
Have to give a BIG shout out to our Host Juan Carlos for making this an excellent experience.
