Kat’s Story
Katherine Portillo and Pavel Ythjall were in a serious car accident on their way to a holiday party on Saturday, December 5th, 2015.
Pavel fractured his skull and C1 vertebrae. The Nuerosurgeon used a Halo to stabilize his cervical spine and save his life. Two months later the Halo needed to be removed due to an infection where one of the screws was drilled to his skull. Unfortunately, Pavel had a seizure shortly after the Halo was removed; he fell and dislocated his shoulder. It was his second near death experience. After months of intense Physical Therapy, he is now back to normal and grateful for this life.
Kat was instantly paralyzed from her shoulders down, leaving her as a quadriplegic. A surgical procedure was conducted to fuse her C3 – C6 cervical spine and left tibia. She is also now dealing with secondary major conditions such as neuromuscular dysfunction of bowel and bladder. As a result, Kat needs 24/7 nursing care for all daily living activities.
Kat is an Active Duty Major in the US Air Force. She has served honorably with distinction as a Satellite Operator for 17 years and is currently assigned to the Space Superiority Directorate at the Space and Missile Center, Los Angeles Air Force Base, California.
Unfortunately, when Kat gets medically discharged from the Air Force, she will no longer continue to receive the 24/7 nursing assistance.
