How Raglan, NZ Meets the Global Challenge of Sustainability
Video Assignment for TOMG409 - A fourth year tourism paper at The University of Waikato.
Narration:
Raglan is a beautiful beach town in the Waikato region known globally as a premium surfing destination. It is home to a diverse community of almost 3,500 residents. This video will discuss how Raglan meets the global challenge of sustainability.
The Waikato District Council is the main regulatory body that is developing strategies to protect Raglan's natural environment and people.
Firstly I will discuss how Raglan is overcoming some of the issues regarding its natural environment.
To mitigate issues with waste, Raglan has an efficient waste management system called Xtreme Waste. They are a non-profit community enterprise that operates a recycling center, bag refuse collection, business and street waste collection and offers free education in schools about the importance of recycling and waste management in Raglan.
In order to protect the delicate cliffs of the Raglan harbour beach, a walk way has been developed to keep the foot traffic off the sides of the beaches and rivers. The Waikato District Council is looking to develop a walkway that goes all the way from the centre of town to Whale Bay and Manu Bay.
Planting has started to occur along the sand dunes to stop erosion. There are also signs and fences that keep people from trampling on the dunes.
The Waikato District Council has been carrying out cleaning programs to clean the beaches, and they also carry out beautification programs, to keep Raglan looking clean and beautiful.
Next I will discuss how Raglan meets the socio-cultural challenges of sustainability.
One of the growing issues in Raglan is the amount of tourists that visit the area in the summer months. This number is growing every year, so how is Raglan going to keep up with the impacts of tourism development?
The Waikato District Council has made plans for traffic congestion and parking. This one way bridge will be made into a two lane bridge, which will increase the smooth flow of traffic. There will be more parking spaces and increased parking times in the CBD. More flexible and frequent bus services will also be developed, to encourage more people to use public transport.
In order to retain the unique character of the Raglan town, including the historic building theme, there will be no development of high rise buildings as there is a two storey limit in the CBD, the harbour will be free of commercial buildings and there will be no chain stores.
The Waikato District Council also has plans to create more sustainable employment for young people, and to provide more recreational options for youth, including finishing the popular skate park.
Raglan is a beautiful place to live and visit. To keep it this way, many issues of sustainability need to be addressed. The Waikato District Council's town development plan is a great start of the planning process for the sustainable development of Raglan, now these key plans just need to be implemented so our future generations can continue to enjoy the wonders Raglan has to offer.

Raglan Eel Farm - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 19: Today we are checking out the Raglan Eel Farm for our activity of the day on New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year!
Yesterday - Day 18 -
Tomorrow – Day 20 –
About this video:
We are in the super surf town of Raglan, New Zealand! But before we hit any waves, we have been recommended to check out the Raglan Eel Farm.
Because we are off the beaten path a bit, finding the Raglan Eel Farm is a task in itself by following some weird directions to get there. Nevertheless, we find a lady called Jan and her eel farm where we learn more about her sustainable eel farm, an more importantly, feed the eels ourselves!
After feeding the eels at the Raglan Eel Farm, we head on back to our budget accommodation: the Raglan Backpackers for a nice soak in the hot pool. That evening, we join some of our fellow hostel dwellers for a pub quiz!

An effort to document my first year living in paradise.
A small town situated on the West Coast of the North Island in New Zealand.
Arriving on 2015 without knowing anything about it I started recording spontaneous scenes. Sometimes using my smartphone too.
I used to edit in the van I was living in.
Me and my partner Max, continued on route, when, after 6 months, we decided that Raglan , originally named Whaingaroa, would be our hometown.
But to be close to that community we needed to know as much as we could about it.
Raglan is not only a surf spot, it is not only about surfing. Raglan is a paradise . Its soul and community is what makes it so special.
It isn't always easy to be accepted, as it happens in many other places around the world; it has been built with the effort of generations of people that put much love into it.
This film is to document my last year in Whaingaroa.
A tiny piece of a place with a big soul.
Hope you enjoy it :)

Raglan Positive Perspective - Peggy Oki Making Waves for Maui's
Peggy Oki inviting everyone to check out the annual Maui's Dolphin Day come the 2nd Saturday of March, on its 8th year, a collaboration between the Whaingaroa Environment Center and Extreme Waste, the town of Raglan celebrates a day of bringing everyone together to raise awareness for the protection of New Zealand's Maui's Dolphin.
Highlights of the event will be the Recycled Raft Race, music and performances from some of Raglan's Talents and a free screening of Dave Rastovich Minds in the Water. An award winning documentary following the quest of professional surfer Dave Rastovich and his friends to protect dolphins, whales and the oceans they all share. Through Dave's journey—a five-year adventure spanning the globe from Australia to the Galapagos, Tonga, California, Alaska and Japan—we see one surfer's quest to activate his community to help protect the ocean and its inhabitants.
As ocean people, it is our privelege to be the custodians of our coastlines. The film documents our attempt at fulfilling that role as we travelled to surfing locations around the world. Cetaceans are the ultimate, and original surfers. They are our ocean kin and it is our role to do what we can to protect their well being. ~ Dave Rastovich
Shannon Waste Water Treatment Experience NZ (Pt 1)
In early December 2014 Ngati Whakatere had called me out as a Horowhenua District Councillor to look at their concerns of pollution to the waterways from the Shannon sewage treatment plant.
The following sequence of films clips was taken by myself, Horowhenua District Cr Michael Feyen - of waste water being pumped from the Shannon sewage treatment ponds into the Otauru Stream and into the Manawatu River. These clips back up Councillor Campbell's (link below) recent film of the same type of disgusting practices of pollution to our waterways by HDC with Horizons Regional Council's blessing. Both organizations are serial polluters. Please take the time to watch all the videos. When called, Horizons did not send anybody out to investigate. Obviously nothing has changed and no one was held accountable.
Chinese plastic clothes baskets are the filters used by Horizons and HDC & their contractor .

New discoveries and humbling failures in the kitchen as we 're' learn new skills that save money, save the environment and could save lives.......albeit not Howy's tooth in this instance. There are always sacrifices made in reaching for your goals tho right?
