The Salar Ethnic Minority - Islam in China // This is Western China
Mengda Heavenly Lake, or Mengda Tianchi is in the Xunhua Salar Autonomous Region. This area has the largest number of Salar people in China. The Salar people are an ethnic minority. They are usually Muslim, and they first came over to China from the area that is now Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Kyrgyzstan. I discuss the people as we hike around the Mengda Nature Reserve.
If you are in the Xunhua area, you can reach Mengda Tianchi by private car. We paid a driver (who approached us by the bus station) 100 RMB (around $15) to take us there, wait for 3 hours, and take us back to Xunhua. The day was a bit wet and foggy, but the 2 and a half hour hike (to the lake, around it, and back down) was pleasant and not too challenging.

President Xi Visits National Media Headquarters
President Xi Jinping, also the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, visited the headquarters of three major national news organizations in Beijing on Friday morning and extended greetings for the upcoming Lantern Festival to people across China.
At around 8:40, Xi arrived at the headquarters of the People's Daily newspaper and sent holiday greetings through its social media platforms and the paper's own news app.
Hello, everyone. With the Lantern Festival around the corner, I wish you all happy, healthy and successful new year, said President Xi in a short audio message recorded at the newspaper. Xi pressed the keyboard and sent the greetings on the three platforms, generating warm response.
As of 11:20, the greetings have been forwarded nearly 10,000 times and liked by more than 17,000 people on the Weibo account of People's Daily, about two hours after it was published at 9:36.
Many netizens thanked Xi and extended an early Lantern Festival greeting to him. One netizen named What she does not know said, Hi, uncle Xi, I wish you a happy Lantern Festival in advance.
Xi also visited the headquarters of the Xinhua News Agency and China Central Television (CCTV) later in the day.
At the state news agency Xinhua, Xi used a remote news reporting command system to talk with an agency correspondent currently reporting from a village in Lankao County, Henan Province.
During the conversation, he said that the work style of grassroots cadres is integral to the Party's rule and is directly linked to the people's interests. He noted that journalists should undertake more in-depth investigative reporting on this work style.
While at Xinhua, Xi was also briefed on the news agency's reporting procedures. After listening to journalists' experience of reporting during the Spring Festival holiday, he encouraged them to be more down to earth in their approach and to report on topics that would be well received by the public.
After leaving the Xinhua News Agency, Xi headed for China Central Television (CCTV).
At the CCTV headquarters, Xi held a video conference with Washington D.C.- based CCTV America, asking staff there about their daily life.
Xi was also briefed on the CCTV business and its media integration, learned about CCTV's transmission capacity, and the production process of the widely-watched Xinwen Lianbo program.
On the Friday afternoon, Xi presided over a working meeting on mass media, urging media organizations to increase their influence and credibility.
National media are an important part of the work of the Communist Party of China and concerns about the governance of the state and the stability of the country, Xi said.
News media should adhere to the right orientation of public opinion, keep pace with the times, respect the regulations of mass media, and encourage innovation, Xi said.

Tibetan Nomad Material Culture of Sokpa Village
Across the Tibetan Plateau, many nomads no longer live in tents or use the tools that were once essential to traditional nomadic life. Those tools that remain gather dust in storerooms, while the people who know how to make and use them grow older. Nevertheless, these materials and the related oral traditions remain valuable features of Tibetan cultural heritage. This documentary was produced with the support of the people of Sokpa, a village of 300 people located in Gangtsa Tibetan Township, Xunhua County, Qinghai Province, China, and one of the only remaining nomadic communities in the region. In [MONTH] of 2016, The Black Tent Films sent three fieldworkers to Sokpa Village to interview villagers about their traditional tools and to document how they made and used them. This documentary includes some of what we learned.

Last year, China announced a plan to establish the Xiongan New Area in Hebei Province. The small region was suddenly thrust into the limelight – just as Shenzhen was when China decided to build its first ever Special Economic Zone there in 1980. The blueprint for the Xiongan New Area is a Chinese model for world-class urban development.

Death toll from China typhoon rises to 19 Xinhua
For More Latest News Subscribe us:
SHANGHAI: The death toll from a typhoon that struck China on the weekend has risen to 19, with four people missing, the official Xinhua news agency reported today.
Seven people were killed in typhoon-triggered tornados in the southern province of Guangdong while seven died in landslides, Xinhua said citing the provincial civil affairs department.
Three fishermen died in boat accidents at sea while one person was found dead in the debris of a house that collapsed during the storm. Four fishermen were missing, Xinhua said.
The storm made landfall in the southern province of Guangdong on Sunday, triggering widespread blackouts, state media said. Winds knocked out power grids along the coast and authorities cancelled dozens of flights and suspended high-speed trains.
Guangdong's civil affairs department said the province suffered 23.24 billion yuan ($3.66 billion) in losses from the storm, which affected 3.5 million people and damaged 282,700 hectares of cropland.
One person was also killed by a falling tree in the neighbouring province of Guangxi, Xinhua reported. Nearly 1.9 million people in Guangxi suffered losses and 417 homes were destroyed, it said.

Stunning frozen bubbles appeared in the city of Mohe in China
In the city of Mohe, the temperature dropped to minus 35 degrees Celsius on Monday. The continuous low temperature has made the local lake Lianhua Lake completely frozen. Somewhere, thick ice reached 60 centimeters.
Thousands of frozen methane bubbles were trapped under Lake Lianhua, looking like plankton.
This phenomenon only appears in the cold region and is caused by dead organic matter. Microorganisms break down organic matter, releasing methane. When the temperature drops, the methane bubbles froze on ice and formed a series of frozen bubbles.
