Meet Santa
To share with our customers more about the amazing women artisans behind our Yabal Fair Trade accessories line, today, we want to introduce you to Santa, the president of the weaving cooperative of Pacutama in the region of Santa Catarina in the western highlands of Guatemala.
History of the Yabal communities after Hurricane Stan
From disaster to hope, we share with you the Yabal story and the heart behind our work. In 2005, Hurricane Stan destroyed many regions and communities of Guatemala. Thousands died during mud slides and flooding and others were displaced from their traditional homes. Pacutama and Chuicutama were one of the mountain communities forced to flee during the storm and climb 3,000 meters above sea level to resettle in the highlands of Santa Catarina Ixtahuacan. Y'abal began as a local NGO to help the communities recover and rebuild in their new home. Yabal provided housing, medicine, food, a medical clinic, workshops, and childrens activities over the next few years. However, the major challenge facing these communities was the lack of jobs and source of income. This is especially important as they don't own their own farm land to even be able to produce their own food. Y'abal Handicrafts was started in 2010 as a social enterprise with the mission to provide fair trade and sustainable jobs to over 50 women artisans. All profits are re-invested in social programs in Guatemala.
