A late-spring hike to Mt. Yaguradake (足柄峠·矢倉岳ハイキングコース)

From Odawara, 小田原市, busy route 74 heads northwest through an urban blend of houses, dormitories, factories and remnant rice farms. At Minamiashigara , 南足柄市, route 74 meets route 78, a quiet, camellia-landscaped road that passes west through the rural valley of the Kari river , 狩川. At the western head of the valley, the road twists its way through many sharp bends to the top of the Ashigara Pass, 足柄峠. There, a signpost marks the start of a hiking path to the summit of Mt. Yaguradake, 矢倉岳 (the arrow storehouse peak). (This mountain has a perfectly conical profile, and from certain locations — e.g., from the Wadagahara railway station, 和田河原駅, on the Daiyuzan Line, 大雄山線 — it neatly eclipses far-off Mt. Fuji, 富士山).
The Yaguradake hiking trail, 矢倉岳ハイキングコース, passes through conifer plantations before finally heading uphill through a mixture of bushes, bamboo and tall grasses. Along the way, the clear, burbling song of the Japanese Bush Warbler (ウグイス) is a constant, characteristic sound of springtime in Japan. 　
On the summit, a level grassy plateau provides an excellent rest area, with clear views of the surrounding misty blue hills of the Hakone region, 箱根全山.

A late-autumn hike from Ashigara Pass to Mt. Kintoki (足柄峠·金時山ハイキングコース)

From Minamiashigara, a pleasant bus or car ride along route 78 leads uphill to the crest of the Ashigara Pass at 759 m. From there, a paved side-road leads along a ridge towards Mt. Kintoki. After 1.6km., beyond a locked gate, the road becomes a rutted 4-wheel dirt trail for another 1.2 km. At that point, a torii gate marks the start of the final uphill path to the summit of Mt. Kintoki (1213 m.). On the steepest stretches of the hiking trail, there are flights of metal stairs and rope handrails.
On the summit, the Kintaro Tea Shop and the Kintoki's Daughter's Tea Shop, sell beer, noodles, etc. On any fine day, even in November, the summit attracts crowds of hikers of all ages.
Since the Minamiashigara area is the site of the famous Kintaro folk tale, souvenir summit pictures invariably include items such as Kintaros monster axe.

In the late-autumn, the view from the peak includes a snow-free Mt. Fuji, steam plumes from the Owakudani thermal area, meadows of Miscanthus grass at Sengokuhara, and tourist boats on a shimmering Lake Ashi at Hakone.
