Enjoji Temple on the Yagyu Kaido Trail!
The Enjoji Temple is a temple with a Jodo-style garden (type of garden representing the Buddhist paradise) which is not commonly seen in the region of Nara.
The beginning of this temple dates back to 1026 when the Juichimen Kannon (Eleven-headed Kannon) was enshrined by Myozen-shonin.
A Jodo-style garden centered on a pond made in the Fujiwara era spreads in the southern part of the temple grounds. From a location a little higher than the garden, a number of buildings stand such as Sakura-mon (gate), Taho-to (tower), Kasugado, and Hakusando as well as the Hondo (main building) reconstructed in the Muromachi era where the seated statue of Amida Nyorai from the Fujiwara era is enshrined.
The wooden seated statue of Dainichi Nyorai housed in the Taho-to is a masterpiece that was made by Unkei, a Buddhist sculptor, during his youth in the Kamakura era and the Kasugado and Hakusando are the oldest Kasuga-style shrine pavillions in Japan. All these three have been designated as national treasures.
There also are many others designated as important cultural assets including the Sakura-mon with its Hiwada (cypress bark) roof and the Four Guardian Kings in the main building. Indeed, this temple that stands along the Yagyu Kaido (trail) is one with a long and distinguished history.

It is perhaps no coincidence that the two Chinese characters that make up the name of Yagyū stand for the willow tree and life, or the giving of birth, for both seem to sum up perfectly the particular characteristics that helped propel this ancient clan to such exalted heights.
This is the true story of the eventful history of the famous Yagyū clan—a story that began during early heady days of the Genkō Rebellion (1331–33), when emperor Go-Daigo sought to restore power to the throne with the support of the Yagyū and other loyal clans. It follows their campaigns on behalf of Go-Daigo's southern court during the Northern and Southern Courts period (1334–1392), and their long and hard struggle to retain their autonomy when the country rapidly descended into anarchy in the wake of the Ōnin Rebellion (1467–77).
It recounts how, through a succession of misfortunes beyond their control, the Yagyū clan first lost its independence, then its castle and domains, until finally its members were thrown upon the mercy of a local temple. Yet it was in the very depth of those bleak and desperate years, that its leader, Yagyū Muneyoshi, discovered his true strength and began his clan's remarkable recover—a recovery crowned with the ascendancy of his son, Munenori, to the exalted rank of daimyō.
Like the pliable willow tree, it was their resilience in the face of irresistible forces that enabled the Yagyū to outweather the raging storms of fortune and remain standing, alive and well, their spirit intact. In doing so, the Yagyū gave birth to an art of fencing that has survived for more than a half a millennium. Among the countless schools of swordsmanship brought forth by Japan's feudal era the Yagyū Shinkage-ryū still stands out for its sheer continuity.

紅葉の吉城園 奈良 Yoshikien Garden in Nara
Yoshikien (吉城園) is a pleasant Japanese garden located in central Nara. It is named after the Yoshikigawa River, a small river that runs beside the garden, and was built on the site of Kofukuji Temple's former priest residences. The entry fee to the garden is waived for foreign tourists.
There are three unique gardens within Yoshikien: a pond garden, a moss garden and a tea ceremony garden. So, a visit to Yoshikien provides the opportunity to see three different variations of Japanese gardens in one spot. If visitors still want to see more techniques of Japanese gardening, the Isuien Garden is located just across the small river.

Miyamoto Musashi: The Lone Samurai
Miyamoto Musashi was the greatest swordsman to ever come out a nation of great swordsmen - Japan. His story, which has become the basis for countless flying swordsman Oriental movies, is one of raw courage, unbridled ambition and unparalleled mindfulness. In one on one combat he defeated 60 opponents, yet his greatest legacy is his seminal work, the Book of Five Rings, which is still pored over my military tacticians and mindfulness enthusiasts 450 years after it was written.
