Yahiko village brought 8 YouTubers to Niigata prefecture to explore the city of Yahiko and share it with the world! Turns out, it's a pretty fantastic place. :D
In this video we went to an old (now unused) elementary school that was turned into a museum, with surprise gangster mannequins, and Yahiko shrine--one of Japan's oldest shrines, which still maintains an ancient Shinto tradition and houses the GOD DEER.

Explore Japan [Yahiko Village - Niigata Prefecture]
Located in central Niigata Prefecture and abutting the Sea of Japan, Yahiko Village is considered one of Japan's most sacred areas. According to legend, the great grandson of Shinto Japan's founding deity, Amaterasu-omikami, settled here. The god helped establish regional Echigo agriculture. Today, Yahiko Village is renowned for its rice, edamame, shiitake mushrooms and sake. Locally caught seafood is another delicious gourmet specialty. Major drawcards include Yahiko Shrine, Yahiko Park and Mount Yahiko (634 meters). The former is one of Japan's most significant shrines. Stately cedar trees, mature maples, blushing cherry blossoms and cheery chrysanthemums can all be found on its premises. The summit of Mount Yahiko is accessible by hiking trails or ropeway. Take in sweeping views of Sado Island and the Sea of Japan coastline on a clear day. Any hiking should be followed by a soak in one of the town's onsen or hot springs. Some are standalone. Others form part of traditional ryokan or inn lodgings. To reach Yahiko Village by train, take the JR Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo. Get off at Tsubame-sanjo Station and transfer to the JR Yahiko Line. Alternatively, travel from Niigata Station via the Echigo and Yahiko line, changing at Yoshida Station.

Yahiko (弥彦村, Yahiko-mura) is a village located in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. As of 1 April 2018, the village had an estimated population of 7985, and a population density of 320 persons per km². The total area of the village was 25.17 square kilometres (9.72 sq mi).

Yahiko Village is situated on the Sea of Japan side of the central part of Niigata Prefecture. Its western side borders Niigata City and Nagaoka City with sacred Mt. Yahiko (634 meters) in between. While Tsubame City neighbors the eastern and southern sides of the village, there is a fertile grain-growing region abutting Niigata City on the northern side. This area is famous for edemame and rice and is known as a power spot, a place that people venture off to regain their energy from the busy city life.

Japan's Ice Village
We're traveling to about half of Japan's prefectures this year thanks to Odigo! You can follow our trips and plan your own on their website:

This is the Ice Village at Lake Shikaribetsu Kotan in central Hokkaido ( It takes quite a bit of traveling to get there, but once you're in the city the local buses will pick you from the train stations and take you to the lake for free during the ice village season! (Make sure to talk to the hotel front desk to get a free ticket for the bus on the return ride!) The village is free to walk through but all the activities (drinks, ice carving, snowmobile, staying the night in an igloo, onsen, etc) cost money! The drinks were 500 yen each (~$5), and getting it in an ice glass was an additional 500 yen. Supposedly they may have dog sledding at some point, too!?
We were a little early because they hadn't finished building the chapel or the igloos yet, but it was still really cool to see the ice cafe! You can also eat lunch at a restaurant in the hotel, although Jun and I didn't enjoy our meal very much (ymmv).
We haven't added all our Hokkaido destinations to their website yet, but once we do we'll make our Hokkaido trip and share it!

Last December looking for kitties we found a stairway off the side of a road that led to a path through the woods. Jun was a bit reluctant but you CAN'T FIND A SECRET TRAIL AND NOT FOLLOW IT!! And to my surprise, it was actually full of beautiful shrines. I believe these are a part of a larger overall shrine that has even more to offer--if we can get back there again we'll show and explain the full place!

Here are some thoughts about the way deer are treated in Japan. I'm going to discuss and share my opinions on things I've observed and I'm aware of. I'm open to hear other people's views and keep in mind I don't have a deep knowledge about how the population of deer in Japan is being managed. I will talk about feeding deer food that's not appropriate, horn cutting, deer fur and meat.

The Water City | Gujo Hachiman 名水の町・郡上八幡
Gujo Hachiman, also known as the Water City! It's just about in the middle of Gifu Prefecture, and I highly, highly recommend visiting!! It's a mountain city with rivers running through the middle. There are koi fish everywhere, you can jump into the water, and the are tons of old-fashioned stores with awesome things to look at. I absolutely loved it!
