Yakel Village
The forest people of Yakel village. One of the last villages in Vanuatu that are living a traditional life. While they know modern ways, and have access to them, they chose to live a more traditional life and stay with the old ways of their people

During our stay at the amazing Rockwater Resort in Tanna (video - we went on a tour to Yakel Kastom Village and Mount Yasur.
Yakel Kastom Village was incredible. A real traditional village, where the tribe live off the land, wear their traditional clothing and live in wooden and straw huts. Watching them perform their dance was mesmerising.
Then we got to see the spectacular hot ash eruptions at Mount Yasur. These eruptions when off every few minutes, so over the course of our visit, we got to see the most incredible eruptions at sunset and then against the dark sky from right at the rim of the crater.
Without doubt, the best (and most authentic and real) experiences we've had in a year of travelling through 20+ countries. I hope this little video has given you a glimpse of the beauty of Tanna and Vanuatu.

We answered the call of adventure in Tanna by learning about the culture. Thank you to White Grass Ocean Resort for setting up our tour to visit Annie and her village. Annie was an amazing host and a joy to meet. We were greeted with flowers and she took us around her village and explained to us about the fruits they harvested from the trees and about the medicine of the plants in the jungle. We saw the cooking house and tasted laplap. They cook sweet potato, taro, cabbage leaves and coconut.
I loved meeting the children and watching their dances. I was able to teach them to hula-hoop. We had shared smiles and laughter. Thank you to the chief and all of the village for allowing us to come visit and see your way of life. See my other video #13 for the dancing in the village:
We also visited the school and our group brought many materials for their classroom including pencils, notebooks and children’s books.
On our way to the village from our resort, we stopped in the market and Sue got feathers and vegetables!
