Yakushima in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan - Relaxation for body, mind and soul
Yakushima (屋久島) is an island off the southern coast of Kyushu and part of Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan.
The island is covered by an extensive cedar forest (nearly 90%) that contains some of Japan's oldest living trees. That`s why some areas were declared as a Natural World Heritage Site. The island has a rich nature with Jōmon Sugi trees that are older than 1000 years, a beautiful sea, waterfalls, wild monkeys, deer etc. Surrounded by this unique nature, our presenter Sam could completely relax body, mind and soul. You can easily come here from Fukuoka by aeroplane within 60 minutes.

Yakushima in Pictures and Sounds: 1/5 Yakusugiland
Yakusugiland is a nature park at an altitude of about 1000 meters with 30-minute to 3-hour walks as well as access to challenging hikes. Ancient Yakusugi trees, giant spruce and fir trees, and stumps left from Edo-period logging are covered in moss. The paths are easy to follow (although I have seen people make mistakes), and bridges help keep trails open even during heavy rains.
It is a 40-minute drive from Anbo, the nearest town. I suggest you buy a lunch and take the morning bus to Kigen Sugi (a 3,000-year-old tree), the stop after Yakusugiland. A few minutes later, catch the bus when it returns, spend the day in Yakusugiland, and catch the afternoon bus back to Anbo. On the way back, you can also stop at the Yakusugi Museum. Stronger hikers who have their own transportation can climb Mt. Tacchu, which has a trail head within Yakusugiland. Yakusugiland is also a good starting point for multi-day hikes.

Issou Coffee “A Day in Yakushima”
When I am in Yakushima, I can take time to stop and think. If I ran a coffee shop in Tokyo, new trends would gradually force their way on me, and I would feel like I’m losing my own style. But this doesn’t happen in Yakushima, and so I appreciate how it is now.
Coffee bean roaster Tadayuki Takata opened his coffee shop in Yakushima ten years ago. Since then people from many countries have visited his cosy cafe in Issou town.

Yakushima in Pictures and Sounds: 2/5 Shiratani
Shiratani-Unsuikyo Park is a nature park spanning elevations between 600 an 1100 meters. It offers 30-minute to half-day hikes in the watershed of the Shiratani River. It can be reached by bus or a 30-minute drive from the town of Miyanoura. If you are a strong hiker or looking for a two-day adventure, there is also access to the island's interior trails to Jomon Sugi and Mt. Miyanoura.
This area can see ten meters of rain in a year, and the moss forests fostered by this rain are some of the most beautiful in Yakushima. However, sometimes the trails are closed because of flooding even when it is barely raining in the towns below.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
The Ryukyu Islands (琉球諸島, Ryūkyū-shotō), also known as the Nansei Islands (南西諸島, Nansei-shotō, lit. Southwest Islands) or the Ryukyu Arc (琉球弧, Ryūkyū-ko), are a chain of Japanese islands that stretch southwest from Kyushu to Taiwan: the Ōsumi, Tokara, Amami, Okinawa, and Sakishima Islands (further divided into the Miyako and Yaeyama Islands), with Yonaguni the westernmost. The larger are mostly high islands and the smaller mostly coral. The largest is Okinawa Island.
The climate of the islands ranges from humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa) in the north to tropical rainforest climate (Köppen climate classification Af) in the south. Precipitation is very high, and is affected by the rainy season and typhoons. Except the outlying Daitō Islands, the island chain has two major geologic boundaries, the Tokara Strait between the Tokara and Amami Islands, and the Kerama Gap between the Okinawa and Miyako Islands. The islands beyond the Tokara Strait are characterized by their coral reefs.
The Ōsumi and Tokara Islands, the northernmost of the islands, fall under the cultural sphere of the Kyushu region of Japan; the people are ethnically Japanese and speak a variation of the Kagoshima dialect of Japanese. The Amami, Okinawa, Miyako, and Yaeyama Islands have a native population collectively called the Ryukyuan people, named for the former Ryukyu Kingdom that ruled them. The varied Ryukyuan languages are traditionally spoken on these islands, and the major islands have their own distinct languages. In modern times, the Japanese language is the primary language of the islands, with the Okinawan Japanese dialect prevalently spoken. The outlying Daitō Islands were uninhabited until the Meiji period, when their development was started mainly by people from the Izu Islands south of Tokyo, with the people there speaking the Hachijō language.
Administratively, the islands are divided into Kagoshima Prefecture (specifically the islands administered by Kagoshima District, Kumage Subprefecture/District, and Ōshima Subprefecture/District) in the north and Okinawa Prefecture in the south, with the divide between the Amami and Okinawa Islands, with the Daitō Islands part of Okinawa Prefecture. The northern (Kagoshima) islands are collectively called the Satsunan Islands, while the southern part of the chain (Okinawa Prefecture) are called the Ryukyu Islands in Chinese.
