Peacocks in Sri Lanka
The magnificent peacock is a bird native to the island of Sri Lanka, with their distinctive calls being heard all over the jungles. For such colorful creatures, they are surprisingly shy by nature, hence the best place to find one is within the boundaries of the numerous national parks, hiding from the daily hustle bustle of Sri Lankan life.
Being the largest of the pheasants, the peacock is a native bird to both Sri Lanka and India. Most often, the ones that you see on photographs with the beautiful plumage are the male peacocks – after which the simile ‘proud as a peacock’ was formed! The female pea hen does not have the lovely ornamental feathers and bright colors. Pea fowl are quite readily tamed and can sometimes be seen in the lawns of hotels or within the garden of large private residences in Sri Lanka.
While on a safari at the Yala National Park, peacocks are a common sight. They could be displaying its fan of feathers or perched up and camouflaged at the top of trees. Peafowl – which is the actual term for peacocks and peahens together, have an average life span of 20 years when living in the wild. In Sri Lanka, they can be found in the jungles of Eastern, Northern and Southern provinces. If driving through the Hambantota district in Southern Sri Lanka, you can see them strolling on the streets as well.
The best time to observe peacocks is in the early morning when males gather around females, shouting loudly and stretching out their lovely feathers to create a beautiful dance. This is how they attracts the females and it is indeed one of the most gorgeous observations of Mother Nature.
So why is it that the male has such an amazing fan of feathers? Well, most obviously, to attract the ladies when in courtship display. The peacock with the biggest and best fan is normally awarded the girl! Most often, successful males are capable of controlling a group of peahens. The females can lay about3-5 eggs and are ground feeders – eat insects, seed, vegetable matter and other small creatures.
Hindus in Sri Lanka have a special place for peacocks – Skanda, the God of Kataragama, sits with his wives and peacocks on either sides. In addition to that, Lord Vishnu, one of the major Gods in Hinduism is often shown with a peacock in the background.
During your visit to the hill country of Sri Lanka, if you have a stop in Kandy and are going to see the Kandyan Dance, you will see peacocks playing a big role. An entire entity of the dance is where the looks and behaviors of peacocks are exhibited. This part of the dance is known as Mayura (translation of peacock) Vannama.

Sharing the Harvest Yala National Park, Sri Lanka
Yala National Park, Sri Lanka. Sharing the Harvest
A short film by SavingGanesh.org: Regardless of strong Buddhist traditions, villagers and farmers in Sri Lanka have an increasing intolerance to elephants' incursions into their villages and cultivated fields.
Yala National Park is a perfect example - since antiquity the elephants have roamed into and out of the park areas as they search for forage and water - most critically during the dry season. Because of the deaths of two villagers, the locals have gone as far as to riot and attack wildlife offices, forcing rangers to erect fences between the park and surrounding areas. Nearly an entire generation of elephants has been lost as they cannot survive the dry season exclusively within the park. In 2014, the Department of Conservation began importing water and food into Yala, to keep the elephant alive. Sharing the land with elephants appears to be a lost value within the communities surrounding Yala National Park.
We interviewed a spiritual leader about the plight of the elephants, and he expressed that it is karma, not random circumstance, that is at play, and that the people should take responsibility for their own actions, and not blame others, whether rangers or the elephants. Greater tolerance and sharing is his message.

Yala National Park is located in the south eastern region of Sri Lanka and extends over two provinces of Hambantota district of southern province and Monaragala district in Uva province. The entrance to the park is at Palatupana, 12km from Kirinda. The distance from Colombo to the entry point of Palatupana is 305 km.
Yala National Park
Ruhuna National park or more affectionately known as Yala, has been the most celebrated wildlife park in Sri Lanka for over a century, along with its first self appointed Boer prisoner of war game warden H.E.Engelbrecht, quiet a story in itself. “Yalagama” as it was known at the turn of the century, was in effect the “Resident sportsman’s” shooting reserve! A wild country reserved for the “Sporting pleasure” of the British residents in Sri Lanka. It is located in a tract of land covering approximately 1260 km2, between Kumbukkan River & Menik River, and shares its borders with Yala strict nature reserve, Kumana, Kataragama, Katagamuwa and Nimalawa sanctuaries. The climate is semi-arid and dry with scrub jungle unique to this area along with rocky outcrops like kotigala, Jamburagala & Patalungala (Pattangala) strewn about the park, while several fresh and brackish water lagoons dot the park.
Yala block I
Today, of about 140 km2 in extent, is open for public viewing from 05:30 am to 06:30 pm after which you have to vacate the park, unless you have opted to stay in one of the camp sites or bungalows inside the park. The ideal time to explore this vast nature reserve would be during the break of dawn and the fall of dusk. Click here to book a Yala Safari Game drive.....
Yala block II
Is for the more adventurous as it involves several river crossings and a four wheel drive vehicle with all terrain driving capabilities to venture deep inside the wilderness, but you’ll also need backup vehicle to venture into Yala Block II, where you’ll encounter less disturbed wildlife but are very shy of noises and will beat a hasty retreat into the shades.
Animals in Yala
Yala is an ideal place to spot the “big four” of Sri Lankan wildlife, the elephants, the sloth bear, the illusive leopard and the wild buffalo, the unsung denizen of the park, if nothing else dangerous to the extreme. The roaming elephant herds can be easily seen during dry spells at the small scale reservoirs like Butuwe (derived from the word “Wana Butewa”) and Mahaseelawa while Uraniya is best known for its aquatic avifauna, wild buffalo, mugger or mash crocodile & salt water crocodiles. The black sloth bear is more difficult to spot as it’s more of a solitary animal of nocturnal habits and sightings tend to be a seasonal occurrence.
The gateway to Yala National Park is Tissamaharama. A 20 km drive via Kirinda takes the visitors to the Palatupana. At Palatupana, the well-designed visitor center provides the information to the tourists and assign a tracker to all incoming vehicles. The park provides jeeps with soft–tops which gives the opportunitiy to view wild life. Dawn and dusk bring about the best timing for Safari tours in the Yala National Park . Being located in one of the arid regions of Sri Lanka, the Climate of Ruhuna National Park is usually hot and dry. The mean annual temperature is 27 Celsius, although in the dry season the temperature could go as high as 37 Celsius.
The Leopards of Yala
According to recent studies Yala is said to have the highest concentration (as high as 01 km2) of the elusive Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya), “The Prince of Dusk”, the apex predator in Sri Lankan national parks and arguably the most versatile of all felines in adaptability on earth perhaps the most famous inhabitant of Yala. The Sri Lankan leopard is also known to be the biggest of the eight known species of leopards’ world over, with the possible exception of Amur leopards. The leopards are more elusive and primarily nocturnal in other countries, but are easier to spot in Sri Lanka than any other place in the world due to the lack of any other predators’ presence, to challenge its domain. Should you witness a kill on a leopard safari, quite often the prey is larger than the leopard, which really gives insight into how powerful these animals really are.
