It was an exciting day of sharing the Yalu River with North Koreans and Chinese swimmers. It was an amazing experience to see just how harmonious the relationship is between China and North Korea.
Opening of bridge linking N. Korea and China delayed indefinitely: Chinese state
Once rosy relations between North Korea and China have soured since Kim Jong-un assumed power in the North a few years ago.
And in a clear indication of the frayed ties, a multi-million dollar bridge... that was supposed to boost trade between the two countries... stands unused well after its scheduled opening date.
Park Ji-won tells us more.
This is the New Yalu River Bridge,... linking the northeastern Chinese city of Dandong to North Korea′s border city of Sinuiju.
The 3-kilometer-long structure was scheduled to open late last month,... but Chinese state media reports the opening has been pushed back indefinitely.
China footed the entire cost of the 350-million U.S. dollar project,... expecting the bridge to boost bilateral trade.
But after four years of work,... facilities and roads linking the bridge into the border cities remain unfinished.
Satellite images taken in September also show that North Korea hasn′t started building customs facilities.
Compared to pictures taken in October of last year,... we see no improvements at all.
In fact,... some buildings have been torn down during the time.
China and North Korea delayed laying roads linking the bridge to the cities because Beijing is not happy with Pyongyang′s nuclear programs and North Korea is unhappy with its current relationship with Beijing. I don′t think the bridge will open until the latter half of next year.
Watchers say the hold up completing the bridge,... which was supposed to handle some 80 percent of goods passing between both countries,... reflects the sour relations between the once strong allies.

Yalu River int'l bird festival
The Yalu River International Bird Festival is underway in northeast China's Liaoning province, where the nature reserve hosts a vast variety of birds.
Hundreds of experts, bird-watching fans and photographers gathered here to be part of the event.
Yalu River Nature Reserve, near Dandong on the Chinese border with the DPRK, has probably the most important remaining mudflat in the area which
serves as a nesting area on epic bird migrations.

CHINA DANDONG
Dandong, previously known as Andong, is a city in the Liaoning province, China. It is on the border between China and North Korea, marked by the Yalu River. Also at this point, the river flows into Korea Bay. The size of the administrative city is 14,910 square kilometers; the urban city is 563 square kilometers in size and has 780,414 inhabitants. The administrative city covers around 2.4 million inhabitants as of 2000.
The city is across the river from Sinŭiju, North Korea. The two cities are connected by the Sino-Korea Friendship Bridge, also called the China-Korea Friendship Bridge. Another major landmark is Hushan Great Wall which marks the eastern end of the start of the Ming Dynasty's extension to the Great Wall. Other interesting tourist spots include: a museum dedicated to the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea (also known as the Korean War) and Jinjiang mountain that is now the city's biggest park, but used to be a Chinese army lookout.

STORYLINE
AP Television pictures from China's border with North Korea on Tuesday showed a tranquil scene in North Korean territory at odds with the news reverberating across Asia and beyond.
In the Chinese city of Dandong, close to the border, Chinese people on the streets said North Korea was wrong to conduct the test, but thought it would not really affect their lives.
The only discernible difference from the same time on Monday morning was a marked decrease in traffic crossing the Friendship Bridge over the Yalu River that marks the border between China and North Korea.
In Dandong City people read news of North Korea's nuclear test in the newspapers.
Dandong City, with a population of 700-thousand, has seen tourism boom in the past two or three years, with an increasing number going into North Korea.
But perhaps the most striking difference between Dandong City on the Chinese side and Sinuiju in North Korea comes at night.
Bars and restaurants in China are open until 11 pm with many diners and tourists on well lit busy streets.
But across the Yalu River in North Korea, not a single light can be seen - Sinuiju is in total darkness..

STORYLINE
As the United States on Thursday began pushing for a new United Nations resolution that adds a travel ban on North Korea, business continued as normal along the China-North Korea border, three days after the North's reported nuclear test.
Chinese and North Korean vessels could be seen docking at either side of the river which forms the border between the two countries.
A truck driver in the border city Dandong said that he didn't feel any change in business yet: The business is pretty good and I don't feel any difference, he explained to a AP Television camera crew.
Despite the uncertainty over the proclaimed test, the U.S. began lobbying for a new draft U.N. resolution that it hopes the U.N. Security Council will pass on Friday.
It will be crucial to get China's support for the U.N. resolution because Beijing is believed to have the most leverage with Pyongyang's enigmatic leadership.
The Chinese provide up to 90 per cent of North Korea's oil and 80 per cent of its consumer goods.
Mrs. Zheng a shopkeeper in Dandong, who grew up and lived in North Korea for more than 20 years, said that business with North Koreans had been getting progressively worse.
In the past we used to do a lot of business with North Koreans, but now the business is getting worse. I don't know why, maybe it is because they are getting poorer, she said.
The impoverished nation of North Korea relies on foreign donations to feed its 23 million people.
China agrees that North Korea should be punished, but Beijing wants sanctions to be limited primarily to the North's nuclear programme.
Neighbouring China and South Korea worry a hard-line approach could destabilise the North and send refugees flooding over their borders.
China has embarked on a flurry of diplomatic activity since North Korea announced on Monday it had carried out a nuclear test.

The North Korean border town of Sinuiju is located just 900 meters across the Yalu river from its Chinese counterpart, Dandong. While most tourists who exit the country from the train will have passed through Sinuiju, it was only opened for Western tourists to visit from May 2013.
Highlights of a day in Sinuiju include a visit to the city's statue of a youthful President Kim Il Sung (built to commemorate his visit in 1945 to deal with a student riot), the provincial Revolutionary Museum, mosaic murals depicting the country's leaders, the Tower of Immortality and the city Kindergarten, famous nationwide for training the performers who do the complicated unicycling and skipping in one of the most memorable scenes in the Arirang Mass Games.
