Yamaga shrine is enshrined in the Sanada area.
This shrine has a history of over a thousand years.
It has been protecting the area as the local God.
Mt. Azumayama towers towards the north. The rear shrine of Yamaga Shrine is enshrined at the peak which has an altitude of 2354m. A rear shrine is usually located behind the main shrine.
There is a temple in the premises of the shrine that protects the God of Hakusan Faith, a faith which worships both their God as well as Buddha. It is called the“Tendai sect Richiin Hakusan Temple”.
Hakusan Faith worships the sacred Mt. Hakusan, that stretches across Ishikawa, Fukui and Gifu prefecture.
Being a village protected by both their God and Buddha, there is a record of the Shinto priest and the Buddhist priest preying together at Yamaga Shrine.
The Sanada Clan had faith in Hakusan-Dai-Gongen as their guardian God.
Japan worships both God and Bhudda. And Hakusan-Dai-Gongen is one of them.
You can see Yukitaka and Nobutsuna Sanada’s name written on the ritual plate of wood in the rear shrine. There are also documents that bans tree trimming in the mountains.
Yukitaka Sanada worshiped Hakusan-Dai-Gongen as their God. The Sengoku Clan and the Matsudaira Clan who later on ruled the Ueda area also worshiped the same God. The family crests of Sanada, Segoku and Matsudaira can be seen on the roof of the Yamaga Shrine.
Hakusan-ji Temple which was built in the premises of Yamaga Shrine was demolished due to the order of the Meiji government. Thus the principal image of the eleven-faced Kannon and Nio Guardians were left in custody of the temples nearby.
Sanada Shrine is enshrined at the ruin of Hakusan-ji Temple. It was built in the Meiji period by the wishes of the local community.
